Is the LO tag only good for 172?

It’s been a long time since I hunted the unit, but I don’t see why you couldn’t hunt deer and elk both in 061. I do know that the advice on where to look in the original post seems to be a little outdated as far as where the elk have been hanging out.

Yes, I’ll be hunting the unit again this year with my in-law who drew a tag. We will be hiking in away from roads. There are deer in all of the mountain ranges in 17.

It’s a great cartridge for deer. In fact I’ve used it to kill a few elk as well.

I hunted the unit last year. I saw lots of deer and no other hunters away from roads and little to no deer near roads and lots of hunters. I didn’t see anything of quality, but lots of opportunity.

That’s sort of the idea, see if I can find a big one while hunting some unique country. Are what few deer that live out there confide along the river corridors, or are there a few out in the deeper part of the desert around springs?

Well, tag cuts are painful, but it should lead to improvements going forward. Deer is my favorite thing to hunt. I sure hope all the greenery helps them recover so we can see tags come back in a few years.

I don’t see the need unless you want to plink long range with what you already have. I hunt and have killed deer, pigs, antelope, and bighorn with an AR in 223 without issue out to 300 yards. If you want to push that 300 yards to 400 or 500 yards the Valkyrie might make sense over the 223, but...

283-284 produces some good rams according to the record books. Looks like a 170+ ram is possible.
