    Idaho Bear River (75/78) elk

Hunted it a few years back, same story as several of the others. Tough hunting. Found sign, didn’t lay eyes on an elk. Started to feel that the elk behave more like deer over there, silent, stealthy, mostly nocturnal.

.270 130 gr. Sciroccos - Good elk medicine?

If 270 is bare minimum, a lot of other calibers are gonna be out in the cold. I’d use a 270 ( with good bullets) confidently! Short actions like .308, 7mm08, 260, 6.5 come to mind. I’d hunt elk with any of those with relatively few concerns, choosing my shots responsibly. I think the 243 and...

Would you take the 56 yard shot?

This is a tough one cause there really is a good quartering away path through the vitals here. But It’s about a 4” window. Obstructions above and below. Long distance, alert buck that might jump. No for me. But at 25 yards, this one I’d probably thread it.

Would you send an arrow at this one?

Ok 2 serious questions: 1) Yes I know a broadhead can penetrate a shoulder blade regularly, and pretty easily (for a fixed blade at least) at 90 degrees. But doesn’t a raking angle on flat bone give more ppl pause? 2) What do people say about hitting the humerus/ball joint?

Would you send an arrow at this one?

The only two reasons I don’t take these chip-shot heart shots are because my local deer are too fidgety and plus I am apparently a crappy shot and a coward (so maybe 3 reasons). Otherwise, highly recommended, but only on really big bucks that might get away if you don’t try. Otherwise, dumb...

Whatever happened to avoiding the strong quartering-to shot? People don’t mind hitting shoulder? Or 1 lung? Or guts?

    Archery Elk Non-Res 22 Points

And sad as it may be, airing out your specific strategy when chasing units with only a tag or two probably doesn’t help you. Though units are not secret, there are always others in a similar situation following along and these threads might be just the push needed. When availability of one tag...

    27 Deer Points

Hey Zim, very sorry to hear about your worsening health problems. Your attitude about it makes me feel like a whimp! Keep at it and if your time on the mountain is truly more limited each year, well, just keep giving it hell while you can, nobody lives forever. Looking forward to more stories…...

can you just sense the desperation???

Would he be ok with me crossing if I agreed to only use my low-powered rifles? What about a bow? What about just hiking or camping?

Anyone wanna talk lead ballons? Do you have any in your collection? Any you want for your collection?

Mine’s a 450 marlin, and I decided to double down for the long haul by buying another. I have ample components to keep it going probably for my lifetime, though always looking for more if they turn up. I just sold a 444 marlin, which wasn’t as bad but is going that way. My 35 Rem is...

What do you think it would take for region G to come back?

not exactly apples to apples with THOSE species vs elk, antelope & deer! But it is obviously true, WY residents pay nonresident prices and are part of NR quota everywhere but home. Whatever those states choose to do.
