First time elk hunting in AZ 6B

Keep track of the weather and possible heavy snow that will close access. There are only a few access roads. I recall one season where hunters had to abandon their travel tralers until spring. A hunt a few years ago had heavy snow and hardly anyone got in.

    Soft images

If on a tripod, is the image stabilization turned off, using a cable release, 2 second shutter delay?

What do you think would be the best setup?

If you decide on a teleconverter, 1.4x may offer better results than 2x. With the TC, the autofocus may also have difficulties in low light. I would try the 150-600 alone before investing in a TC. Use a tripod, Image stabilation turned off, cable release, 2 second shutter delay.

    Snowdona

Flagstaff currently has its second snowiest winter on record and the latest storm brought 30" to the house. I made my way down to Sedona before the storm and before the highways were closed. Ten inches of white goodness fell upon the red rocks. This trip was also the maiden voyage for a new...

    Winter Conditions so far…

Thanks for the winter reports so far. With 12 NR points for antelope, I will be paying attention to the winter snowkill reports. I had a nice hunt in unit 64 back in 2010 and have been accruing points since. I figure this is the year to cash them in as I doubt I will draw an elk or antelope...

    Colorful Colorado

It is difficult to say "no" to the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. Seems that each year, Utah and the eastern Sierras make voices heard, but Colorado shouts louder. So again, I pointed the truck northeast from Flagstaff and spent the first week of October around Durango, Ouray and...

    Bulls and Bolts

Thanks for the looks and comments. I drew no hunt tags for this fall, so will doing more hunting with the Nikon.

    Bulls and Bolts

With the summer rains and thunderstorms starting, I went up to the Grand Canyon for a couple of days to photograph some lightning and elk. The lightning was often evasive to me, mostly off in the distance or hidden behind the clouds. One six point bull did oblige as it munched on the oak leaves.

    Painted Desert and Moenave Valley

A recent phototrip with a couple of friends from Colorado had us in remote areas in northern Arizona. The first evening had us overlooking a beautiful section of the Painted Desert with its colored Chinle formation. The next evening was spent in a pinnacle-filled filled valley surrounded by...

Current Drought Conditions in Coconino County?

Pretty dry. Only 3" here in Flagstaff this year so far. Only 1.4" at the Grand Canyon airport.
