Antelope Island Sheep

Does anybody know the status of the sheep transplant? A DWR biologist told me in September he thought they'd be here around January but I haven't heard any more about it. He said they were working on NM and MT Rockies instead of California's.

Also, it looked like the fence was being constructed near the lake on the east side... Is it completed or still under construction?

They haven't worked on the fence in awhile. There were still fence posts in the parking lot at Fielding Garr.

I don't know if they are done or on a weather stop.

I remember hearing something about them getting a disease? Is that what happened to them?

They got pneumonia and died or were euthanized. The transplant was today. 25 true Rockies from Montana!

I can only imagine how much SFW will get for that tag? I would think there will be some huge rams in the near future

KUIU needs to up their game. If $fw paid for them(with welfare cash) there would be a plane circling the island with a banner. Billboards on the freeway. Signs covering the causeway.

Doesn't Kuiu understand PR?

Props to companies like them, Sitka, First Lite, etc who put THEIR money where their mouths are.

I was lucky enough to be at the release Wednesday. The 25 Rockies (17 ewes 3 lambs 5 rams) were from the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana. We should be thrilled by this release because the reservation has been harvesting 190 class rams that aren't real old. The plan is to use these sheep as a source herd to supplement and expand other rocky herds in the state. This was the same idea with the previous California bighorns on the island but the Newfys herd can and will take on that role now. Kuiu and Brendan Burns paid and coordinated getting these sheep from the Res. But there were many who made this project work.

That’s awesome!

Way to go to Kuiu and anyone else involved. Sheep are very cool and fragile animals. I hope this herd does well.

Very cool to see a private company step up and do something like this without demanding dozens of tags they can sell in return. Very cool indeed!

I guess I ought to go place an order as a thank you to their company.
