We just released this new article on "How to Score a Mule Deer". We wrote it with a twist, not your typical scoring article. If you have a few minutes it is worth the read. https://www.skregear.com/how-to-score-a-mule-deer/

Give us some feedback on what you think?

Thanks for posting the link to the field judging article. Good article but I was questioning this statement;

“Average mass on a mature buck is usually around 17-18 inches”

Was that supposed to be per side? I always use 30“ for easy math and then adjust up and down from there...

Nice article with a good message. You may want to revise the symmetry section, as it is not completely
accurate:

“For example, if a buck has 30 inches of nontypical points on one side and 10 inches on the other side, you are going end up with 20 inches in deductions.”

Symmetry deductions only apply to the typical frame (MB, G1-4, H1-4). Abnormal (non-typical) points will be added up and either deducted from the net typical frame (typical category) or added to the net typical frame (non-typical category). Hope this helps.

7 1/2” circumference in 4 places? 30 “ average? Post a few of those average bucks. I’d love to see them.

Yes 30“ total mass or 15” per side. Errs on the conservative side when field judging...

You beat me to it BOHNTR, the fact this is even in there has me questioning knowledge of the writer.

Thanks for the comment. We took this back to the writer and he acknowledges that error. We will get that changed on the post. Thank you.

Yes 17-18 inches was in reference to one side. I have corrected that portion of the article to reflect more clarity. Great discussion gentleman. I have a number of bucks in that 190-200+ inch range and prior to writing the article I tallied several mass measurements from these deer to come up with that average per side of around 17 inches
