California buck last weekend of the season

Congratulations! Can’t beat that for a last weekend buck.

Here is the story.
My son is a pretty dang good hunter at such and early age. He has been successful on 5 big game animals at the age of 13. 2 of those being bucks from California dzones. Anyways he was not successful in the draw which I was surprised because his group was splitting points and should have been good but I guess there was a bigger jump this year. So he was left with a D8 tag which is a zone I dont really hunt. I usually hunt D9 as my back up tag and know the zone well. Between his Utah elk tag, fire closers, this was the only weekend he would have to hunt for D8. I gave him some options: Deer Hunt, Bear Hunt, or Chukar Hunt. We decided to try for Deer Saturday evening and if it was a bust we would hit the Chukars the next morning. My inlaws were in town so we had a tight window to make it work. I knew a place that would possibly turn up a buck or two. As we entered the trail head we planned to hike about an hour before getting off the trail and making another hour hike up a steep ridge. As the shadows started to take over the mountains its was slowly getting "deer time". As we made it the last couple hundred yards from the top We decided to peel off the back side to take a look. We were not 20 yards from the ridge line when I jumped a buck. My son was right on my heels and if the buck came out in front of us we would at least have a shot. I did not have time to get the tripod set up and there was no way he could shot off hand. So I dropped down in front of him and he rested the 260 across my knees. Pretty soon 2 bucks popped up. The 3 point was below and with the slope of the mountain my son could not see it. I told him put your ears on and just take the best shot. The 3point was getting a little nervous and started to walk off and was now facing straight way but the other buck was still broad side but he needed to get with it or they were going to bolt. A second later the gun goes off and the 3 point drops in its track. He broke it back. We gave a little fist bump and made our way over to the buck. Its an above average buck for D8. I drug it down into a flat area and started breaking the buck down. After an hour or so qwe had all 4 qrts loaded in my bag with the straps, heart and liver. It was all down will to the truck and a heck of a lot faster and easier than last week. Walked out with flashlights and ended the night eating deer stew at his great grandmas house. Played a few card games and turned in for the night.
This kid is something else. Now onto a bear and some pigs to top it off. Cant forget the coyotes also.
