A buck for Megan

We've been working on getting a deer for my daughter for three years now, and it finally happened.

My daughter got her hunting license at 10 and turned 12 in January 2018. I put her in for all the youth draws here in California and she drew one of the either sex tag for D5.

To get her ready for that hunt and to get her practice at shooting I took her on a pig hunt where she was able to get a nice boar.

That fall dad failed pretty bad and we only had one chance at filling her deer tag and it just didn't happen. Last year she didn't draw any youth tags, just had the normal D zone tag and with her soccer schedule we never made it out.

This year I was able to get in on some private land for deer hunting so the focus was to get her first buck tag filled. With her half day school schedules and a soccer related hip injury, we were able to get out afternoons and weekends when we could.

Opening weekend - We got out that Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. The place we have access to has a large number of does, but finding the bucks early in the season would be difficult.

We waited a week and her schedule for Friday afternoon opened up. Picked her up from school and we went directly out hunting. Friday was hot, 93 degrees and the smoke had moved in. Gave everything a orange/red color. We made it out and Megan was on no hiking orders from her mom, which ment we would move from place to place and glass to see if we could turn something up. The first two hours turned up a few does but the heat and smoke seemed to be impacting the deer.

Sometimes is just happens, Megan moved her license/tag from her left pocket to her right, we had a luck Snickers bar(the regular not peanut butter) and on our way to the next glassing point ran into this guy bedded up under a tree. Luckily he stayed put while we backed the truck up, piled out, got the sticks set up, and waited. He stood up and immediately started moving up hill but stopped at 80 yards to look back. He stopped quartering to us and one shot thru the shoulder and exit just under the spine Megan had her first buck.

got the buck cleaned, broken down in the ice chest for the trip back home. She wanted to sleep in on Saturday and that was ok, quick stop by In-N-Out for dinner, stop by my parents house to show off and then home, it was a good day and great to get her first buck of hopefully many more.

Great story well put together< nice buck way to shoot straight when the time comes. Congrats Young lady way to go.

I have not seen a woodpecker tree that bad since I was in Saskatchewan Canada there must be some kind of beetle or bug in that tree they want.

Congrats to the young lady, and to dad too, building memories to last a lifetime, well done.

They make the holes then fill them with acorns, the place is full of oak trees and the acorn crop was very large this year. We could hear the woodpeckers going crazy on the trees. Every year I have to go up on my roof and pick the acorns that they have stashed up under my shingles.
