My son drew a 081 late deer tag in Nevada (Youth 0 pts) i personally have never hunted it and i really only have two questions about the hunt, and that is, is it worth scouting for resident deer at ALL during these summer or early fall months? (general ranges to look for summer ? maybe) or is there pretty much nothing to look at till later when the herds move in from Utah and Idaho ? if so what time period should we scout before the season opens on Nov 10, the other thing is where is the best place to camp if there is high snow levels? Have 2 Atv's and maybe a UTV, we will be doing Alot of hiking but incase we need to use those with chains to get in. Not looking to kill a giant on this hunt as i like to eat deer and not eat tag soup, i have heard its quality has went down since the earlier years, we are gonna try to hold out for a high 160s buck, i can exchange info on a few areas aswell for elk/deer/antelope, PM me if you want. Thanks Everybody.

the season dates are as follows.

Nov 10 - 20 Archery
Nov 21 - Dec 11 Muzzy
Dec 11 - Jan 1 Rifle

Your son got a rare tag there. My buddies kid shot a good one a couple years ago. Spend a weekend getting familiar with it. Then don't bother scouting until season starts. I was in there one year when the archery hunt was on, just driving around shooting coyotes. Had a big bodied 4x4 come down the hill, never looked at us he was sooo rutted up. Half of his tines were busted off. He jumped the fence to the right of us, walked 15' in front of the truck, never stopped to look at us, then jumped the other fence on the left of us. Crazy how rutty some bucks get.

It was a bit tougher there last year, but the archery hunt was the best. More deer earlier, then it seemed to fizzle out. We had a great time with the late rifle hunt. It gets COLD!!! Call and get a room in Montello, but I am sure they are all sold out. We didnt have much snow last year. But it was single digits some mornings. Wind blew alot too. If you have an enclosed UTV, but we drove our trucks the whole time. Roads were not that bad. Some yes, but for the most part, we went were ever we wanted in our trucks. We had our best luck around Bald mountain, north and south of there. IT was a fun hunt. Towards the end we figured out alot and found lots of deer, but not the giant we had hoped for.

Thanks for all info, very cool buck you got there, I'm looking forward to this hunt sounds like it should be fun either way, what's the best access to the unit? Through montello and the ranch? Nice to hear the roads weren't too bad, hopefully snow levels will be similar.

Access it through Montello and then the Ranch up there. All open roads and very smooth roads for the most part. We were able to drive 40-50 mphs when needed a few times to get back to the hotel. My bropther in law, HAWKEYE, killed this buck Dec 27 if I remember right. Fun times though.

I just joined the forum due to all of the great posts of hunters helping each other. I also drew this unit this year and am trying to find out info on this area. It sounds like it is gonna be really cold.

Is it the weather that starts the migration, instinct, moon phase, or just the local heard?

Thank you for the info on the roads. I really don't know much about this area.

we shot every bigger sized buck we found, was hoping for bigger but went like 5 days only seeing small deer so we took best we could find, seemed all the bucks were bachelored back up except for the smaller bucks, muzzleloader tag would be prime for the rut.

I have the muzzy tag this year and have had the rifle tag in the recent past. Go enjoy a fun hunt with a kid but don’t make him hold out for anything extraordinary. This is not a crazy special unit but is absolutely the best kind of youth hunt there could be. Lots and lots of opportunities and room for error. So don’t stress and enjoy having a blast with your youngun knowing there’s no pressure. The next opportunity isn’t far away.

thank you. i sent you a PM if you'd like to share anything. im not expecting anything bigger then 160-170 to be honest, if that. just looking forward to chasing rutting deer with my son.

That hunt is not what it used to be. But a 160 is doable. Some years good early snowstorm will set them migrating early in late Nov. Then sometimes dry years they wont migrate till Jan. So thats a hit or miss deal.

The other challenge is in the heavy snow years absolutely can need a sled. We been out there and for stuck. Been out there with tracks on my side by side also. That made it fun.

Lastly while there is alot of deer if u hit the migration right. It can seem like alot less when migration is slow. Or you mis it.

Wow that late of a migration? so for the earlier hunts like Archery And muzzleloader, its just the resident deer herd there then? Archery starts Nov 10th. Muzzy is 21st.

Yes exactly resident. And IMO that resident group has been hammerrd. They increased tags last 3 years by 100% for some reason.

Appreciate the info, I'm praying hard for snow but for as dry as it's Been and the pattern we are in. We'll see. Seems like they're increasing tags in alot of the "trophy" units.

I drew this unit as well, the late December tag. As many have eluded to weather will make the difference. This unit in my opinion can still be the best in the state. I’ve read people saying 160” at best but I have pictures on my phone right now proving that otherwise. Stay behind the glass and cover lots of ground. I’ve been in there in November, while the archery season is underway and due to cold temps and not necessarily precip. the unit was crawling with big deer rutting hard. I believe that can be the best time of year for this unit, but if we don’t get cold temps and weather til later in the year then it can push the rut deeper into the year.
good luck, if you have any questions let me know

I don’t know if you’re familiar with the drop tine buck currant guided out of there? I believe it was 2016. I was told north of the baldies the next spring brown sheds almost identical were picked up in the burn. November of 2017 I was in there on an elk tag, driving up mine mountain sure enough basically on the road chasing does. I snapped a couple pictures, sent them to a currant guide that had two bow hunters with him. They found him the next day ended up passing on him, and killed a 180” 4x4 with a hook cheater a couple days later. Didn’t make sense to me. The other hunter killed a 190” straight 4 later that week also. Just goes to show the genetics that have been circulating in that unit. I’ll include a couple pics of that buck and the 4x4 hook cheater buck.
