"I am writing to you regarding the 28-1 youth hunt that I took my son on starting Sept 15th, 2021. As you know the future of hunting depends on our youth and therefore I am compelled to provide you with our comments regarding the hunt we recently went on.

A little background on myself and my son. I am 38 years old and my son is 13. He loves to hunt and fish and has taken two antelope and one deer in his short hunting career. I have been hunting all of my life and have traveled all across the west in search of deer, elk and antelope, bowhunting and rifle hunting.

As you know the 28-1 youth hunt is limited to 10 tags only, any deer tag ( doe or buck, mule deer or whitetail). We traveled some 1000 miles to come on this hunt and not to harvest a doe. My son missed a week of school (independent study) to embark on this exciting adventure and we were both excited to say the least.

What we found after 5 hard days of hunting was an extremely low deer population in the hunt unit. To the point where an experienced adult hunter would have struggled to find even a decent buck and does were very limited. We hunted private land (2000+ acres with lots of irrigated AG) down to the river as well as the high country along the Ridge Rd. Even the irrigated AG had relatively few does on it for the amount acreage. We glassed Bob Moore creek drainage, Jessie Creek and the high ground around Wallace Lake etc. The deer numbers were so low that we only seen 2 does along ridge road, 12 mule deer does in the private and a half a dozen whitetail deer on the private in 5 full days of hunting! We know we were finding all the deer because we kept finding the same ones. Sure, may be a few whitetail does and mule deer does in the backyards of various residences in the valley, but that's something we cannot hunt, let alone shoot a rifle in and what kind of experience is that.

The 40k+/- acres in 28-1 had very little deer feed in the public land (lots of rock and shale) and the deer population is struggling at best. The hunting is so poor I am not sure if you are doing more harm than good with our youth hunters? I have taken my son on 3 other youth hunts in the past and they have all been quality in terms of opportunity to take a good representation of the species. This was absolutely terrible. From talking to the locals in Salmon they confirmed the deer hunting has been very poor on that mountain for a long time.

We did locate plenty of elk coming down to the river each day and I am experienced glassing for big game animals. Not road hunters.

My son follow up this hunt with a general adult rifle hunt in Nevada, probably one of the worst rifle tags in the State of Nevada and seen 10 bucks the first day and killed afternoon day one.

I scoured the internet and reached out to any all guides that would answer the phone about the unit prior to going. I have never had a tag like this where so little information was either available or so few people willing to discuss. I know why now. My bad for thinking a youth hunt would provide enough opportunity for a youth to stay engaged. Never do that one again. Stay away.

Respectfully,

Tony Ford

Idaho needs to cut the tag numbers for residents and quickly.
Their deer seasons are a complete joke and most of the plates are killer "B's"

Meh.. if you want to cut Hunters eliminate all non resident tags and increase resident tag cost to make up for it. That will get a guaranteed number of hunters out ( non rez) and cut some amount of residents out that won’t pay the price. Let’s just do that for a few years and see how it goes

For those that are still learning to see facts then perhaps that is what they must do.

For the people that just witnessed the unlimited number of resident hunters pounding an already lame deer herd this would be simply wasting time.
I was out there. Didn’t see a soul. Killed a nice buck too. You may want to get off the road

Truth is, for every new tag sold in Idaho to “resident” hunters, a non res tag needs eliminated. Still saw way to many California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, etc out slaying two points. Add to those the easy to spot new move ins and there is way too many tags. With the onslaught of off road vehicles, mechanized long range rifles, and NR who stay the whole 14 day season, I find myself rooting for the deer. Become like Wyoming where a NR can get an general elk tag every 5 years and good deer tags take much longer. Seems fair to me.

It could be entirely possible that all mule deer herds in the western United States are struggling badly. Yes tag allocation adds to that, but bad winters, infringement on winter habitat, lack of predator control, and overall hunting pressure seems to be an issue. Non residents are annoying to most locals, and understandably so. But most of the deer herd issues are not being handled within our government. Seems to be a trend on all issues that matter in our society right now. For the record, I believe residents should always have the rights of hunting over non residents. The state owns the animals, not the feds. But address these issues with the politicians and state agencies. They are the ones screwing us. Not the guy who is legally allowed to obtain the tag.

Deer hunting in Idaho is a joke. And it’s not the NR killing two points, it’s the residents whacking every little buck walking around.

You want to compare WY to ID?!? At least when you draw a tag in Wyoming you actually see deer!!! ?? No one’s gonna waste 5 years of points to hunt a general unit in Idaho. It’s a waste of time.

The elk hunting is off the charts though.

You residents are clowns and blind ones at that.
Oh and by the way please keep your deer off the BLM and National Forest land.
Residents are entitled to the state land only.
Access yes.
Lol

Mule deer hunting in Idaho ain’t worth the effort. Due to Mother Nature and IDFG’s unwillingness to do the right thing when she strikes. The odd dude who lucked the F into a decent buck means nothing. Mature bucks are EXTREMELY few and far between.I won’t bother with resident or non resident bullshit.
We get a string of mild winters everything will be ok for awhile. If not..well it won’t lol.

Lol.
Nope.
America.
So you are a Utahrd…makes perfect sense. Know it all, entitled, presumptuous…fits perfectly. You really think given the dramatic increase in move in “residents” to Idaho (who all want to hunt) that keeping NR tags the same they have been for 30 years is sound management? Residents should be limited before NR? NR who spend the entire 2 weeks lookin to smack a 2 point don’t do more harm, per hunter, than the weekend warrior resident? How about your state manage for opportunity so Idaho doesn’t have to be the west’s fall back for hunting? You refer to facts? Yes, resident tag sales have gone way up. Due to people moving here. You think the long time resident should be squeezed out before the NR?? How selfish…and petulant.

FACKIn Amazing the comments on here !! For those of you that think there is an abundance of deer in Idaho WAKE the F--K UP !! Yeah we need to cut non-res tags make all NR draw only!! Cut the damn doe hunts out completely & do away with the forkie general hunts . Idaho's population in the last 4 years has grown by almost 150,000 guarantee ya the deer population has NOT increased by anywhere near that # . I have areas I am in all the time the same areas 10 years ago on an evening drive we would see 100 plus deer right off the road!! last 5 years driving the same roads have not seen more than 15 deer on a evening or morning drive & the area I am talking about is Private .. I am in the Owyhees all the time in units 40 & 42 hunting yotes & cats, we would see 1000's of deer in a day 5 or 6 years ago Now your lucky to see 100 on any given day !! I am sure there are some units in the state that have faired better than others but 22 23 31 32 32A 39 40 41 42 43 45 just to name a few have been Hammered !! Funny thing for the get off the road commenters in these units I can be 3 miles from the closest road & the results are the same

CC, your right. 2 pts only for youth and over 75 thats it. I cringe every time I see a No tag soup for me or fill the freezer.
ya that 2pt will sure feed you for awhile like 4 meals. we just have no older age class of bucks. went to North Utah archery hunt the last 2 years and even though I didnt fill a tag I was seeing more mature bucks in a day then I have seen all season in Idaho, very sad.

Thanks for the report. Always helpful when looking at different hunts and draws. I did a similar hunt a few years ago and we never saw a deer on public land zero, zilch nada - just on private. We still joke about that hunt - another memory made. Leased a ranch for barbary sheep - not a track on the place. after 3 days zero sheep seen. Gratefully the owner let us shoot one off a different ranch so it wasn't a complete bust. Better luck next time, but you will remember this hunt for the rest of your life!!

Endless stream of Idaho plates past our house all deer season long.
Far too many new resident hunters.
Some with 2 tags.
Bull-butter. No residents had a crack at a second tag as the NR allotment sold out before they were available as a second. For a person who speaks of “facts” you sure don’t have a firm grasp of any. Does it get tiring being so dishonest??

I got a 2nd tag from the NR allotment. A lot of people got two elk and deer tags

a little whiney and entitled. Maybe just don’t hunt Idaho anymore

Entitled? Are you saying me posting comments about how the poor the youth hunt is (private and public grou
Yeah, where on the tag was the guarantee? Probably did more damage to your sons interest in hunting bitching about the hunt. I’d agree, dont apply here in the future
This message was for any mom/dad's/grandparents out there considering taking their son or daughter on this hunt and looking for a perspective, that's all, maybe before applying ( I would of valued some first hand experiences cause I couldn't find any). One father son experience, maybe for others it could be different. Like I said, son and I went to Nevada and he harvested his first mule deer, a 4x in one of the worst adult rifle units in the state following this hunt ( IN THE RUBY WILDERNESS). Did someone in Idaho say something about getting off the roads???? I think his interest in hunting is alive and well - unlike the deer herd in 28-1.

No one said anything about a tag guarantee. My personal opnion is a youth hunt should be something the kids can have a good time on and find opportunity if they put some effort in. Otherwise, why make it a youth hunt.

Anyone using the word “seen” in the context you did should be discredited immediately.

Congratulations that you got to Hunt.. Lots of adults and kids don't get to.
Memories are hunting also.
We caught some nice fish together on the Salmon and he chased bugling bulls with me around Stanley. Definitely a memorable trip!

How? Are these tags that were turned back in? General tags sold out earlier this year than in any year previous. I am going to be lobbying to adopt Wyoming’s management approach. NR can hunt elk every 5 years on general. Deer? Control only, reduce tags to 10% of resident sales. Has to happen

The rubies one of the worst deer tags in Nevada? Try one of the biggest deer herds in Nevada.

Hope your applying for one of the thousands of available tags! You’ll have a good chance to draw one relatively speaking with zero points. My son did.

You have lost all credibility with this statement. Kind of shows how disconnected you are with the IDFG tag system. Does it get tiring being so uninformed?
