I drew the Late season archery tag nov 9-22 for this unit. I've been on the unit a few times, but only in the late spring/summer. Has anyone hunted this unit recently? What are some tips/tricks or any advice that you would have for me. What caliber of deer is common to the unit? I'm looking for 180+.. If you have some pictures of deer that you've seen or killed off of the unit I'd love to see them..

TIA!

Seeing a 180 will be possible but not likely. Getting one with a bow chasing does will almost be impossible. Fun hunt to see deer. Let us know how you do.

Guys seem to kill bucks chasing does on the extended every year. What makes this hunt different?

Possible but certainly not easy. Dates on this hunt aren’t nearly as good as the extended archery areas either.

I think you are in for one of the most unique hunts Utah has to offer. Not a lot of deer hunts in the rut. I think you are going to find does, learn to outsmart them, and the bucks will walk right in front of you... Id love to follow your hunt and see how it goes. Keep us posted.

I have hunted it 3 times with family. All rifle hunts. The best buck shot was 180. One year a group that had two tags hunted a week, put on a lot of miles, glassed a lot and didn't even hunt the last two days. Didn't see a buck over 150. This was 10 years ago or so. It is a fun hunt, not an easy hunt to get a 180 plus buck, but possible. Please let us know how you do.

The few Big deer are hard to pattern. 180 would be a top line buck in any unit now days even more in a unit that has small numbers.
That being said a buddy had a elk tag and he claimed to have seen a few really big bucks while hunting it.

Unique is a good way to put it! I'm excited. I'll be sure to update this thread to let everyone know how it went. Most of the people on here are pretty quick to say how mediocre the unit is, but I've had many direct messages letting me know that the unit does hold some great bucks, and some locals have let me know of multiple 200" bucks that are still walking the unit as of this last spring (not that they would be easy to find). Regardless I don't think it can get much better than chasing rutting mule deer with a bow.

Unit 40 deer population has been below objective numbers for years, thus no doe tags or a fourth season antlered hunt. I guess CO decided to open a fourth season hunt this year since Utahs been killing “their” deer with the late hunts for years.

Here is the result of my hunt! Couldn’t be more happy with him. Found him opening morning and chased him for 10 days. I was within bow range many times before I caught up to him at 60 yards. This was the heaviest, most mature, and biggest framed deer that I saw the whole hunt. All in all an amazing experience! For reference on his size his beams are 26” and 24.5” and he is 28” wide outside.

Had opportunities and saw plenty of 160-170 bucks during the hunt and saw about a million deer. The best part about the hunt was that it felt like I had the entire place to myself. Besides the Colorado hunters when their hunt was on I only saw other hunters a few times and they were all right up by the border. All in all an amazing experience! Nice job buddy, you did amazing. I sent you a PM.

Congrats! Way bigger than the average buck killed in that unit. What does he score btw?!
I’m no official scorer, but me and a few buddies taped him out a handful of times and got anywhere from 176.5-180.5. He’s got about 1-2 inches broken off of his g2 on his right side and his left side is just slightly weaker all around.

Awesome buck. You did well and earned that buck. Thanks for sharing. Been putting me and my sons in for that unit due to the later dates and not conflicting with other hunts for several years. I know it is somewhat weather dependent, but always has a few good ones. With the low number of tags it is a tuff draw. Hoping some day to get to be involved in a hunt in this unit.

Thanks for sharing.

I was going to guess low 70s net. Still a great buck for the Triangle.
