Nonresident licenses and tags for 2022

go on sale Dec. 1

By Roger Phillips, Public Information Supervisor
Friday, November 19, 2021 - 12:52 PM MST

Nonresident hunting, fishing and combination licenses for 2022 will go on sale at midnight MST, Dec. 1, 2021. Nonresident deer and elk tags will go on sale starting at 10 a.m. MST on Dec. 1.

Licenses and tags can be bought online at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, or by phone at 1-800-554-8685, at a license vendor location, or Fish and Game regional offices during normal business hours. The number of available tags for each deer hunting unit and elk zone is available at https://idfg.idaho.gov/tag/quotas-nonresident.

Hunters can buy hunting or combination licenses prior to the tags going on sale, however, this does not improve the chances for any tags, does not secure a tag, and no refund will be issued for the license if the hunter does not acquire the desired tag.

When tags are made available at 10 a.m. MST, hunters can add a hunting or combination license to their “shopping cart” to purchase a license and tag together.

How to purchase on Dec. 1

If purchasing a deer or elk tag online or through the mobile app, a virtual waiting room will be available 30 minutes prior to the start of sales for all customers logging in.

At 10 a.m. MST, all customers in the waiting room will be randomly assigned a place in line and an approximate wait time to access their accounts.

After a person’s place in line has been reached, he or she will be directed to the customer account, and then can click “Buy a License, Permit, or Tag” in the upper left of the customer account home page.
After the selected tag is added to the shopping cart, the buyer has 20 minutes to complete the transaction. If the transaction is not completed within 20 minutes, the tag will be cleared from the shopping cart and made available for other nonresident hunters to purchase.

Tag sales for Disabled American Veterans (DAV)

There will be limited quantities of nonresident DAV tags at the discounted price available for sale at 10 a.m. MST on Dec. 1. At that time, 500 nonresident DAV deer tags and 300 nonresident DAV elk tags will go on sale. After these discounted tags are sold out, nonresident DAV hunters can still buy tags, but at full nonresident prices.

Disabled American Veterans must be at least 40 percent service-connected disability to buy discounted tags, and must submit the required DAV certification documents to Fish and Game before Dec. 1 so that there is time for the buyer’s profile to be reviewed and updated with DAV status.

To prepare for the 2022 license and tag sale, we suggest all nonresident hunters:
  • Review the Big Game regulations on Fish and Game’s website.
  • Nonresident deer hunters must select a regular deer tag or a white-tailed deer tag.
  • Remember that a Game Management Unit must be selected when purchasing a nonresident deer tag, and an elk zone must be selected when purchasing a nonresident elk tag, and there are A and B tags most zones.
  • Review the number of tags available for the unit or zone you intend to purchase. Note that many units and zones have a limited number of tags available, and could quickly sell out on Dec. 1, so nonresident hunters may consider a back-up option.
  • If you have never purchased an Idaho license, permit, or tag, Fish and Game recommends that you complete your profile setup before Dec. 1 to expedite your checkout process. You may do so by visiting GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, and creating an account using the steps listed on the site.
Idaho’s nonresident tag allocation for deer and elk tags has changed. Nonresident hunters in most general season elk and deer hunts are limited to 10 or 15 percent of the total hunters in each elk zone or deer unit based on hunter participation estimates averaged over the five years prior to 2021.

The new limits do not apply to capped elk zones, and the statewide quotas for nonresident deer tags (15,500) and elk tags (12,815) have remained the same for nearly 30 years.

Is it best to log on 2 hours or 15 minutes early. Every year for the last 3 years if been about 2000 person in line. by then your screwed..

This is the worst system in the entire country… can’t believe they are going down this same road again. Log in for a virtual draw?? Come on Idaho, just put the damn tags in a normal draw like everyone else & cut out the timed rat race BS. Biden could’ve come up with a better system… Judas.

Had my tag in the cart but couldn't check out. It froze every time. Then would time out. I could log back in and get my tag again, but no check out. Now my tag is sold out. F you Idaho Fish and Game! Worst system ever!
That sucks. Heard on another forum some had same problem. I had to relog in after my turn came up (sounds common) and was able to get my deer tag. I had a decent spot at 7000 but the two elk tags I wanted were gone.
This process is literally a draw so they should just make it an official draw so people don't have to stress out over b.s. like you experienced.

Ya way to many people online at once. Sat for 5 hours before i even got on. Was like number 25000 in line

Agree 100 percent, not to mention they do this process during a work day where if you aren't the foreman or a computer scientist, you don't have a chance of getting a tag.

Seriously though… the people running the show have to see the writing on the wall, system is terrible. Like others have said they are already running it as a virtual draw. Stop dicking around and just put them all in a draw, unfortunately we are at that point. Charge everyone a $10 application fee. Put that money to some good, and help out the wildlife.

Wow is all I can say…. It was a $hit show for sure…. My family everyone but 1 person ended up getting tags for the unit we wanted….. but it was rough…. The last 3 it showed 0 tags and they kept refreshing each until we got tags that came back from some carts that were not bought in time.

**** Idaho, I logged on for the 3rd year in a row and was the 1345 person in line then when I got to my turn it logged me out. Sat for 3 1/2 hours...

So many thigs wrong with this system, I logged on 2 hours early at 830 I figured I was sitting pretty good only to find out that he timed me out 945. And had to re enter the waiting room at 945 only to find out that I was 13 thousand 450 person in line..

As bad as the system is, I would rather deal with this than a draw. At least with this system I can have a plan B, C, D, etc. I ended up not getting the tag I wanted, but I did end up with a "plan B" tag which is better than nothing. I'd rather have the online lottery that another draw in late spring that i can't plan around and don't have any second options if I don't get my first one.

Not if they gave you 5 choices you could rank like Nevada. It would end up exactly the same and you'd always get your backup tag. They should hire Kalormey (who does NV draw) and figure something out.
Regardless, I still think the ID hunts left over after the draw are some of the best OTC tags you can get in the country. I had a unit 58 muley rifle tag this year (cuz I bought well after the draw). Super low deer numbers and success %'s but I had a blast and saw TONS of elk. Got within 70 yards of a decent 4 point and blew the stalk. Can't ask for better than that.
And lots of whitetail opportunities. Price increases do suck ass though.

Same here!

"Why don't you all quit crying about it and get ready for next year? RES/NONRES who cares! We all Americans and bitchin about this stuff is stupid. Do your best to get a tag if that's what you want and if you don't, suck it up and move on. Nevada is far and away the best run state for wildlife (not saying much) and guys will always find a way to get the hunt they want or settle for one they can get."

Calbuck, here is a statement you made in the NV forum. Maybe you should take your own advice? Key points are highlighted in RED for you. ----SS

I suspect that people organize themselves into groups where the person that gets the lowest tag buys tags for others. Seems like that would be a good way to play the system.

The most typical part to the whole thing is all the hypocritical residents who are buying licenses and tags for all their nonresident family, friends, and clients.

You cant buy tags for others. Its only good for one person per transaction. So people definitely are not doing that.
If you call in and get the right person on the other end of the phone, They will let you pass the phone around if your group is with you. Just saying.

I was sitting in the duck blind and logged in 25 minutes before they put us in the "line". Got number 1300 and got my elk tag. I actually shot a gadwall while in the middle of checking out.... Pretty smooth transaction on my end. :)
That's the exact same way my buddy got his archery elk tag last year. From the phone in a duck blind. Meanwhile I ended up number 9,999,999,999 or something in line.

Good luck with that. Getting your whole group together on a work day…. Then getting the “right person” on the other end of the phone to do that….

I was 8399 and by the time it was my turn the Elk and Deer tags I wanted were sold out. Might just throw my name in for the draw tags at this point and see if I pull something.

Hey y’all don’t worry in not to long you non-residents won’t be hunting and/or very limited opportunities lmao ? than there will be to many residents and we won’t have but limited opportunities…. otc or buy online is the past….. enjoy it while you can lmfao ?

Guess I'll just move to Idaho. ?‍♂️
I was eligible to retire last week so............Nothing keeping me in this sht hole anymore.

I truly hope all you salty a$$ MF's spread the word about your feelings towards Idaho's non-resident system to all your like minded friends. It makes me happy knowing that many outdoorsmen won't be encountering your whiny, entitled a$$es in the future. Adios douche bags!

Thing is, I got a tag. System is still a pile. Just call it how I see it. Who wouldn’t want a regular draw for nonresidents? Does anything we nonresident hunters “whining” about change anything for the worse? State could make more money off the non res paying app fee’s. Seems like a win all around to me. More $$ going toward the wildlife in “your” state seems like a good thing??
I feel for you though, nonresidents crossing state lines, showing your lame a$$es up. Putting Idaho on the map. Wrecking big bucks and bulls all over the state. No question the quality in Idaho has taken a hit. So many good areas getting publicized. I’d be pissed too, living in your little hunting paradise. Wasn’t that long ago you residents had it made in the shade, and the state wasn’t crawling with masses of nonresident go getters.

Hahaha got me! I've sucked it up and moved on. Thanks for keeping me in line

What I said on the Nevada forum is the same as here. I'm not above bitchin about things once in a while but I'll find someplace to hunt. Hopefully in JPicketts backyard :ROFLMAO:

Probably too far from the truck for you. See ya next year. Oh wait, no I won’t

Another Idaho two points doomed huh? You non Rez guys are all talk, then just have to fill that tag. Your all the same
I actually ate my Idaho 55 tag this year because I didn't find a buck that I wanted to kill. I saw a lot of little ones, up to about maybe 20" 3 and 4 points..not what I was there for. I found one buck that I knew I wanted to shoot but didn't get the chance. We aren't all how you make us out to be.

Funny! I was born and raised in SE Idaho. Moved to southern utah after I graduated for college 20 years ago. Never ended up moving back to Idaho. However I still get back to my home stomping grounds every other year or so. I have only filled one deer tag in that 20 year span in Idaho. Passed on many bucks hoping for the one. Eating a $500+ tag is better than filling it just to say you got one IMO.

No worries, I don't hunt trailer parks. I did get MY TAG today. Can't wait to kill me ANOTHER Idaho deer! Oh, and got lucky and picked up a Nevada late rifle deer tag today too. Yay me!
More chucklin'......

It won't be on our ranch or our posted valley. We neighbors have all long coordinated and have posted our places, you'll earn your two point the hard way. Grin.

Wow you seem important and you hunt PRIVATE GROUND too?????? Wow your are exactly who people think of when they use the word PRETENTIOUS. Smh

Bitter,,,,,bwahaha...many of us hunt PRIVATE GROUND or our own places.
You guys need some cheese for the whine here....
My grandpa bought a large ranch last year. So that’s why we are headed up to Idaho hunting. Everyone got tags but 1 so really can’t complain…. The way they do it just makes it kind of a $hit show but it is what it is.

Lol. I watched a Rez shoot at a dink fork off the road it took 10 shots to finally wound it. Then I watched another Rez shoot at a dink buck 6 times finally wounding it, then literally give up tracking the deer. I watched the buck limp into a canyon, I told the guy where it went and he basically said “oh well there’s more deer around”. Couldn’t believe it...

Well when residents spend $144.60 and get to hunt every animal in the state, they don’t really appreciate what they have. So when sh!t goes south and they can’t find a two point or two to fire lead at they just blame it on non residents

Yep, **** like that happens everywhere and it's shameful. Rez are often the idiots around here. straight up truth.

it sucks not being able to hunt with your Son ,relatives and friends, this needs to be a draw so families and friends can put in together as a party and hunt together.
if its just about being together you don't need tag to be in the woods with your family

I hunted idaho in 1989 and after about 5 days in a wall tent in the mountains my dad and I decided to stay a night in town, have meal cooked for us and get a shower.

Well we awoke the next morning to find all 4 tires slashed on my truck and the same for 5 other out of state vehicles in the parking lot.

Deputy showed and said he'd look into it and the hotel owner said go to the tire shop and he will set you up, I will pay your deductible and if you don't have coverage for something like this I will buy the tires.

Tire shop didn't have tires that would be a direct replacement but could have them sent from a town 2 hours away and put some loaners in my truck and said go hunting. In fact told me a place to check out that was closer to town so we could come back in the afternoon to replace tires.

We went hunting saw one of the best bucks we saw on the trip and went after him but he got away. Then we returned to town and they replaced my tires.

Months later I received a phone call from the deputy explaining that a local boy had been in a bar earlier that night looking for his old lady who had been running about with an out of state hunter and hadn't brought her back home in a couple days. He had no idea who the guy was or what he drove so he took a flock shot at a couple local hotels and bars. He later bragged about it.....

I think that might have been Ole JPickett himself...

That or some nonrezzy keeps shooting his "target buck".

Hah! I work in a steel shop and the attitude is that if No one is screwing with you it’s because no one likes you! I’m glad it could be taken for what it was. A joke!

Hey JP my 13 year son wouldn't shoot one of your Idaho 2 points, he saved it for one of you local weekend warriors.

With the amount of snow piling up out there, it’s probably a good thing you shot the two point. Most of them will be dead in a creek the next few months.
