NR should have known...

You’re the one defending slob hunting. And your silence on the most pertinent question speaks volumes.

Slobs everywhere thank you for your advocacy.:ROFLMAO:
your the slob for judging people. :ROFLMAO:why do you care what other people legally do?

it’s all the same thing shooting an animal and you can cook up whatever ethics you wana play, be it “deserves it” or not.

I don’t recall judging you. But notice that you did me.

Try to make an argument. I already addressed legal. I didn’t expect you to comprehend.

I might check back when there’s some new ground to cover.

pick the adjective blue. i just used yours describing the hunter at the wedge.
no real judgment of you just a question of why get all caught up over it.

and yes iv had a nice stroll through the wedge with my coffee and comment on the archery potential ;)

Most of them aren’t residents, and the residents are pretty apathetic. Except for stuff like this.

Its those pesky local activist politicians like county commissioners that will fix the loophole.
Not a Colorado law expert but in most states the County has no authority to regulate hunting. I highly doubt this will ever close to hunting but the County Commissioners could petition the state CPW to adopt an archery only rule.
Most states always shut down any of the city’s ordinances which ban hunting inside its boundaries as it carries no legal weight on any lands open to public hunting access. It comes with the territory of who has the authority and mostly it’s the state in this case CPW.
Hunting holds a special place in most states law, which gives the state CPW all the legal authority. Generally, open lands available for public access are open to hunting. Exceptions could include lands administered by the National Park Service. Other federal lands agencies, like the the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, specifically leave the regulation of hunting entirely up to the state.

Am I the only one that thinks that more and more public land on the “urban interface” is being closed every day, because of exactly what this bonehead did? I personally know of several areas that can no longer be hunted. What am I missing? This guy isn’t a hero.

The residents and the tourists they depend on will get what they want, period.

No fancy lawyering will matter. This isn’t some trailer park south of the tracks*. These people have powerful voices, and they will use them.

And you won’t hear a thing. Because thats the way the world works.

Your post is naive and nothing but wishful thinking.

* They have ample opportunity for land swaps and such. Land ownership derived from old mining claims often produces odd shaped parcels - like tis piece that’s basically an easement that’s “owned” by the USFS. Refer to the onx map I already posted if you don’t believe me.

Are you that bored or just like to argue over the internet? Legal is legal...... ethics of the situation might be different than yours? Get over it.
Ok we get it.
1. You know the area
2. You would not hunt it
3. You think your opinion is the only and right one.
4. Keep repeating the above 3.

Your ONX snips will help people in there planning for next year. I am sure you will get some PM's for more info

If they close it, great for you and your ethics and you can smile knowing the wedge is safe. If not it will be hunted again next year. Apparently it is a hot spot for bow hunters. And now will be even more so.

Those people in Telluride want hunting closed down everywhere for the most part anyways. This guy didn’t change those peoples minds with that one incident. As more and more people stop hunting, they no longer relate to the North American conservation model. The fact remains the herd needs controlled. I don’t know the area well enough but from what you describe it sounds like the perfect area for an Archery only season. That can only come from the state. It is Illegal for cities and counties to pass legislation which affects hunting. The CPW is legally charged with that duty. Your Ignoring that fact makes you appear very Naive. I get it, the guy pushed the line on what is legal vs. what is ethical. We had two old bozos from Minnesota recently did the same thing in Wyoming near Jackson by shooting a herd up on a small island in the middle of the Snake river, they shot from the bank then could not get out to the dead elk. The locals use a high use walking trail in that area and were not impressed. If you feel strongly about what occurred I suggest you contact CPW but county commissioners and city officials don’t have the power to change hunting laws, that power rests with the state.

You should block me. :)

It was never about the elk. Would you like me to summarize my previous posts? I promise to keep it to less than 1000 small words.

My previous question never got an answer... What type of death would have been more acceptable for this elk..? Starvation.? Hit by a car.? I would much rather a legal hunter harvest an animal than have it succumb to ANY OTHER type of death...

As I said, I couldn’t care less for the elk. My beef was hunter (outfitter?) behavior. I’m sorta surprised you missed that.

Thanks for letting us know that. Many Texans will lose sleep over it I am sure.

But those of us that understand the psychology behind statements like that, will sleep just fine.
David, if you don’t start being nicer people will stop asking to hunt on your place.:ROFLMAO:

Yep it's crazy to see so many "hunters" on this site that are alright that the leaf lickers, bikers, hikers, etc. don't want hunting on public land

I'm with you!!

Nothing screams hunter more than being able to grab Starbucks on the way to gut the elk you shot.

Bluehair and gunnihunter are you guys against the Wasatch extended archery hunt in Utah? Is it only for slob hunters?

You mean that hunt where the flatbrims buy UofU parking passes and stand breathless on the edge of the cemetery just daring one of those bucks to leave?

Or the one where dudes hunt?

They ain't all the same

your the slob for judging people. :ROFLMAO:why do you care what other people legally do?

I'll answer that.

I would care. Notice the NR part.

It wasn't a local guy, desperately trying to feed his family. Wasn't a local guy, who the other 364 days a year has to negotiate community politics, PTA meetings, kids sports.

It was some jackwagon, who rolled into town, started a fire, and ran away.

Same as the idiots from Michigan up on the Snake this year.

Somehow, dudes are able to figure out the permit processes, logistics, and economics of NR hunting, but couldn't look on the same ONX map and see what was up? "Sportsman", it has meaning.

My previous question never got an answer... What type of death would have been more acceptable for this elk..? Starvation.? Hit by a car.? I would much rather a legal hunter harvest an animal than have it succumb to ANY OTHER type of death...

Hunters don't specifically own the game. The State does.

Some members of that State, prefer them dying of old age.

So you shoot deer off a feeder and you wanna give a guy grief about shooting a public land bull? Makes sense
Right back at you. You defend a guy for shooting a tame bull in Colorado in someone’s back yard, and badmouth anyone who shoots deer on a feeder?? My ranch is 30 miles from the nearest town and if a deer at a feeder sees a human, they run. I suspect the elk just looked up when he saw the hunter and then went back to eating.

And for the record, I don’t hunt at feeders. I harvest animals for meat, and kill lots of pigs at feeders. Haven’t shot a buck at a feeder in over 20 years. And that was a cull

And to be clear, if they ever opened up RMNP for a draw to elk hunt, I might put in, but wouldn’t hunt 100 yards from someone’s backyard in Estes Park.

I don’t know. You takin the shot?
Not chiming in to poke the bear. Just stating my opinion, I wouldn’t consider this much of a “hunt” and wouldn’t do it for the same reason I do not own trail cameras or use guides or hunt private land. However, I do think it’s hilarious that this guy killed Oprah’s pet elk and for that I’d like to give him a high five. People who don’t like hunting and or hunters aren’t ever changing that position, no matter the “ethics” involved in the harvest ?

Legal bull,in season public land
I would have done the same thing without hesitation. i dont give 2 chits how many it pisses off if its legal i have a, tag its gonna die and i dont care if it was, 10 yrds, 100 yrds or 10.feet from the property line, let um *****

You guys really need to go to T-ride to see how dumb this was. The ”hunter” needs a tune-up.
No the t-ride residents, need to
Accept he killed a public land legal wild bull elk not somebody's pet
They don't like seeing animals die then they shouldn't live in a place where people kill animals

Might be the case with the locals, although the optomist in me wants to believe some of them are pretty neutral to hunting issues until some bozo goes off the rails. And of course, the resulting publicity also taints other voters throughout the state.
No- the residents of t-ride, are 100% anti hunting they do know. What the word neutral or middle ground is, they're a bunch of cali/ny transplant yuppies, its, partly their money and votes that brought wolves, to colorado

You would have to be a sick son of the ***** to want to watch a wolf tear apart a human, regardless if he was a hunter
I don't know, there are a few, of my family members I'd be willing to shoot in the kneecaps so they couldn't get away , then sit back & enjoy watching them get ripped into pieces and digested

The more people that read about this story the more hunters there'll be hunting the Wedge. It's like school shootings...if they weren't on the news, nobody would do it.

I am glad there aren't any pictures of said killed elk around. That would surely make the Wedge a destination spot for wanna be elk killers.

Now Bluehair can go water the tree he planted in honor of the elk. Maybe light a candle or 2?
They’re watered with the tears of NR’s hunters who are rapidly losing the respect of the people who live here.

I gave a trespassing poacher a pass this year…..never again. The next one won’t be hunting in my ’hood for 5 years min. And if I can, I will make it as rough on the “outfitter” as I can.

”Problem is people will try and loophole everything”. Recall who said that? But you still don‘t see it do you?

Everyone that wants to paint this bull as tame should spend some time up there during season. In 2020 I saw three elk shot out of this herd in one morning. Two of them by students at THS. This isn't a tame herd and not all Telluride locals are antis. I would never hunt the wedge like this guy did due to Tellski's lease on the Forest and the fact that you would have to cross the town's property to get to it, but the rest of the forest up there is and should be fair game as long as you are 1/4 of a mile from the houses which isn't hard to do.

Roll your eyes all you want, this was not a loophole. Your just bitter. Water the tree, light a candle. Hold hands with the other tree huggers and cry for the bull. Sorry your pet elk got shot

It's losers like the guy who did this that make people hate hunters. NR hunters even more so.

He knew it was a low life thing to do and he did it because he's a low life.

Thats right….you shared that loophole wisdumb.

Having to get the fishcops and sheriff to recover it, and then pleading GUILTY to trespassing is just another straight-up legit non-resident adventure in Colorful Colorado.

Remarkable how many here defend the indefensible.

All of the people with pro killing opinions have never been there. If any of you had witnessed the elk on the valley floor during the hunting seasons would realize that there was no hunting involved in the killing of the bull. Go to the zoo or Estes Park or Yellowstone and kill the bull of someone’s dreams. Your weak and stupid arguments are just that. Just shut the f __k up. No one wants to hear you but your ignorant selves.

Bluehair, big difference in a loophole for some dimwit to try and get away with running trail cams and somebody legally killing a bull on public ground.

WTF are you babbling about? I think you slipped a cog trying to wrap your mind around how you plead guilty after enjoying your legal and honorable hunt.

You obviously didn't read my post.

Being a-hole earns you nothing.
Poacher? No
Yeah, I took the liberty of expanding the definition of poacher to include someone who commits a crime in the taking of game. That doesn’t work for you?

While I don’t usually get into these long drawn-out arguments, I’m actually having some fun here trying to find when you finally stop digging.

The dude‘s a doosh. Admit it.

I have to assume anyone who'd defend shooting a pet would do it themselves given the chance. even if you think shooting tame animals is sport the fact that it's such a serious and well deserved black eye for hunters is reason enough to condemn it.

And this would all be reprehensible enough if it had been a resident but for a NR to do it is like pinning " please kick me " on the back of every NR hunter . I don't need that.

This clown deserves tarred and feathered no question about it.

The vast majority of people that have an issue with this also have an issue with our ability to hunt in general. They are whittling away piece by piece maybe everyone should figure out which side they’re on.

I’m not super informed on the situation, I was under the impression an elk was legally killed on public land very close to town. If I am mistaken I apologize. The infighting between hunting will be our downfall and there are tags available in these areas to reduce the herds for various reasons.

Then count me as an avid hunter who has a problem with it. and maybe I'm not sure I want to be on the slob hunter side of any issue.

never forget there are no hunting rights unless you're a tribal member you have hunting privileges. crap like this hurts us all and we need to call it out as what it is.

One day they will say you shouldn’t be able hunt wilderness, BLM, forest service, or any public land for that matter for the same reasons you have with killing legal game animals on public land close to others that oppose your life style. I’m not saying I know all the details to this but if it was legal everyone on this site should be backing it up. I promise you someone someday will come after your wilderness experience for the same reasons.

The ground that the elk was killed on is public land.....but they say the elk are like "town elk" and all should know it. It is a sketchy piece of property as it is pretty much in town or on the outskirts so take that for what it is worth. It's a debate that won't go away and no one will win.

Hunters have a hard time in general winning as it is. At least half the population doesn’t like hunters doing what hunters do best, kill Bambi. I don’t care much for high fence hunting, hunting over a corn feeder or for guided hunts for that matter but they are legal and who am I to say how one can hunt as long as it’s legal. We can always lobby to get it changed but as long as it’s legal people are going to continue to hunt that way.

Lots of things are legal but that doesn't make it the right thing to do. if you want to ensure hunting goes away just adopt the attitude public sentiment doesn't matter.

I've always tried to be a responsible sportsman and look out for the resources as well as the public image of the sport. when I'm hunting out of state I try even harder I'm a guest and want the locals to know I respect their laws and the area I'm hunting. I'm not driving around tossing beer cans out the window, shooting up road signs and I'm sure as hell not going to shoot their pets on the edge of town whether it's legal or not.

It's disappointing anyone would defend what this clown did it gives another unwanted insight to the mindset of the slob hunter.

Agree with most of your post but I don’t think a wild animal is anybodies pet. Not everybody possesses the same core values or morals you and I do.

I don’t really care for marijuana being legalized by States but it’s here, the tax money is just too much to pass up for many and getting high is too much fun for others. Unfortunately we don’t have the morals Police and the only way to change this is lobbying for change. Once we do that what’s to stop them from lobbying to close your favorite hunting grounds. Speaking of hunting going away….

Guys you sound like a bunch of panzies trying to hide reality from the tree huggers. Successful hunting results in killing why hide it? They know it and we know it. I'll never hide that fact from them and I really don't care what their opinions are on it. They will try to end hunting regardless. They are going to see the results of successful hunting weather its close to town or not. Man up. Be a proud hunter and defend other hunters doing it legal regardless of if "you would of done it or not". They don't care where the hell the elk was killed they only care that it was killed and there are several tree huggers out hiking around watching people kill elk in remote areas. No difference they saw it. They are all their pets in their mind. Get over it.

Maybe they should keep the elk out of town if they don't want people killing them on public land. Probably be the wise choice here

That was why I suggested turning that wedge into a "Park" or "refuge"....I'm sure that wouldn't be that difficult considering what a huge argument it has created on MonsterMuleys.com. If they only knew of the battle that lies on these 2 pages of thread....

The notion bad actors can't influence people's opinion of anything is misguided. that's like saying if we're going to shoot cyotes why not shoot their poodle too they're mad already so screw them.

This is not an isolated case it happens all the time, how legal it is may vary but the effect is the same. some fat slob drives into a little town, or in this case a famous tourist trap, sees a buck or bull and craps his pants. too stupid to think maybe if it was legal, ethical and this easy some local might have whacked him already. or maybe he just doesn't give a FF .

If I didn't know most hunters wouldn't condone this behavior I'd become an anti hunter myself. or at least I hope I know they wouldn't .

These aren't pet elk. If you saw where these bulls go after the rut I guarantee you would perceive them as being as wild as any bull.

So what you're saying is that, just like miles and miles away from any civilization, the bucks and bulls that rut don't give any regards to what is around them. That must be why the elk in the wedge seem like pets to the villagers?

I live across the road from private property which is a timber company. Their deer come in my yard all the time and aren't afraid of me. I can work in the yard and they pay no attention to me. I hear people shooting during deer season, so I know people hunt it. If someone shot a buck and it ran into my yard and died, I'd tell them to bring their truck over and I'd help them load it up. I try not to shoot one myself, but I can't always resist. I've lived here since 1976.

From what Ive learned on monstemuleys non resident hunters ate the only thing that keeps these poor mountain towns running and without them they just wouldn’t exist. These towns folk should be praising this and begging more non residents to come shoot elk in there back yard so they can afford there beans and bread through the winter

I thought the topic was pretty simple - should the NR should have known it was dumb to march into the middle of town and shoot the elk the tourists take pictures of.

We should take a page from Wyoming’s book and make all non-residents hire a guide. Especially for those tricky in-town hunts.

Good bye Mom and Pop diners and numerous hotels.....or hello business loans to get through October-March. Good bye VRBO and Airbnb revenue. Every state needs NR hunters regardless of what anyone says.

So if you issued all NR tags to residents do you think all of those business would still go under. They survive 8 or 9 months out of the year without NR. No doubt NR and hunters in general bring in millions a year to communities.

Our final gas up and non camp food was in the little town of Tres Piedras where we topped off and grabbed a hamburg at their little restaurant before turning off the main highway and traveling 25 miles to elk camp. The closest gas and food to be bought is over 50 miles away. About 10 years ago or so we pulled in to get gas and discovered they were all out of business. Things come and go like the seasons I reckon. I’m not for banning NR, I just thought it would be an interesting question to pose seeing how many want a lot of things they don’t agree with banned.

I am sure that I am not the minority when it comes to heading out of state wanting to support the local businesses. We leave our town pretty much empty handed and WANT to buy groceries at the local supermarket. We WANT to buy beer/gatorade etc at the local liquor store. We WANT to eat any meals while in town at the Mom and Pop diners. We KNOW that our money is what they depend on or is a big contributor to them staying afloat. That being said, every state should have a 50/50 tag split between resident and non-resident. Lets put this plan in motion...

Interesting. I don’t head out of State to support local business, I head out to hunt and I support some of them along the way. I take much of what I need with me. I gas up along the way and maybe have a meal or two. I do this in State as well when I’m traveling 7+ hours to hunt. 50/50 sounds fair to me on National Forest land.
