G3

Been waiting of course like others for some sharing news. Stopped by the zone in late October and zero sign high or low. Stopped in late November but plan fell through and only there an hour at midday. Deer trails visible in the usual spots on the sides of the hills. Found one small 2 x 3. So hoping others had more luck on their hunts. Frankly seemed super dry in October and November. Maybe rain / snow tomorrow.

Did spot a group of elk in the valley though.

Just for fun. I beleive this was at division creek the friday or tuesday after thanksgiving years ago. We were parked and I was chatting with another person around lunch time when this guy walked between our thrucks! LOL

Bad thing is this unit use to have a number of amazing bucks come off of it every year! And guys wouldn’t even consider shooting that buck but the unit has gone down hill and everyone still remembers the good ole days that are no longer around for g3 anymore.

You just described every unit in the west. 99% of guys are shooting that buck if they see it. Doesn’t matter the year. And rightfully so. That’s an old mature buck. I bet those guys in the photo do not think G3 sucks. Even when the hunt was amazing most guys shot dinks.

I’m just amazed there’s still hunting in CA ?
 
Unless he got lucky and pulled one of the random draw tags, that's likely 19 years of pref points used up. Pretty decent buck though, prob better than most
 
I don't know what the answer is but IMO i won't use max points on G3, G39 ,unless your a guy that really doesn't care about size,If you just want to go wack a buck this is your place.......
 
It seems to be the type of hunt where you'll see tons of deer and maybe find one that would top 160.....if you work your ass off it is possible I would guess. It also seems that lots of guys just drive roads and glass. I would love to hunt there and I put in every year. I have max points. I don't care about score...never have. I focus on an enjoyable hunt the older I get (50 now). I've killed my fair share of 200" deer so I don't need anymore. LOL. Kidding. Hunts where I see lots of bucks is what I like. He looks like an old, mature buck but I wouldn't shoot this buck on the 1st or 2nd day simply because I wouldn't want the hunt over so quickly. I can't wait to draw the tag.

Well said except wonder about the score? Sort of like fishing initially. One wants to fish. Then one desires catching as many fish as they can. Then the drive is to catch a really big fish and later what matters is the quality of the outing. But love to see animals in the outdoors. Especially mule deer when hunting or otherwise and high scores just icing on the cake.

But nothing says you have to fill a tag on a G3 hunt. Was your chance to see a lot of deer and hopefully take a trophy. If not so be it! That in my opinion is what the hunt is about.

Doubt I would harvest a deer the first day of a G3 hunt. Because I definitely would not want the hunt over quickly. Sort of like sex me thinks.

Of note one time in the Symms canyon area of G3, I saw approximately 100 mule deer in a little more than a 300 yard by 300 yard area in the 1980s. Dining in a burn area at the time. Is that a ton of deer?

And no additional harvest or scouting pics???

Well lets say out of the 100 deer they averaged 200 lbs each so I would estimate there was roughly 10 ton of deer. So yes you are correct, that is a few ton of deer.

Score....I lied...score matters I suppose. If there were a 130" 4x4 standing next to a 155" 4x4 I'd kill the one that was bigger...that would score more. :)

Seeing 30 deer a day is a lot of deer to me. I hunted a late season tag in NV about 8 years ago and on one evening I saw about 12 deer including 3 bucks, in the first hour. To me, that was a great evening. Seeing 100 mule deer in one canyon would be like sex...very fulfilling but only for a short time. I would rather see 5 groups of 20 deer through out the day.

I fish and I would rather catch lots of 1-2 pound bass than 1 4 pounder. Would I trade the 1-2 pounders for something 5 pounds or heavier...absolutely. Fishing is different than hunting for me. I've caught 2 bass over 6 pounds and it is addicting so I want more. Would I trade catching 4 6 pounders over catching a 10 pounder? That is a tough one. I would assume a 10 pounder fights just as hard as a 6 pounder but I wouldn't know. It also would depend on if I was throwing 60 pound braid or 8 pound mono. Sorry...off on a tangent.

Jim, who is in the picture and guiding Darrel, told me the bucks' teeth were worn down to the gum line. He thought that's why the antlers grew that way. Jim didn't think the buck would survive another winter. He said the body was in pretty rough shape as well.
 
thats interesting. i lived on that side of the sierra every winter and always would hike up to watch the deer pour over the crest during the first big snow.
