Antelope unit 64 (best time to hunt it)

Just wondering when the best time to hunt antelope unit 64 would be.
1) Opening week
2) First week in October
3) Last week of the hunt

First week of October. Most people will be done hunting antelope at that point, and that’s historically when the rut is at it’s peak.

Much of that area is General license for deer and quite a few cow elk hunters starting around Oct. 15th. If you don’t like crowds hunt midweek after the opening week but if you come out during the archery season and have a big buck scouted out, I would be there opening morning.

I’ve hunted it a couple of times during late September-early October. Hunting was great and had the unit all to myself.

I've had two different strategies for antelope period. (not just unit 64)
Either go scout a few days early, find a buck you really want and be sitting on him first light opening morning and kill him.
I've also skipped the opener and tried to mostly hunt during the middle of the week so there isn't as much pressure.
I've killed really good bucks both ways.
My favorite is the second option if I can work it out.

Last couple of weeks can be risky, snow can be an issue as is the migration and all around wariness associated with multiple groups hunting in the area.
If you look at the season breakdowns/numbers:
300 Elk Tags from 10-1 thru 10-31
General Deer from 10-15 thru 10-20
Plus the other 224 Antelope hunters
The later into the season might be a bit more crowded, but usually the antelope are a bit more grouped up. Could be a good and bad thing in each situation.

What others said find and shoot it first day in the morning or start middle of week after opening weekend there- nearly half the pronghorn shot get killed the first two days I would guess. Just do it before deer and elk get started for a quality experience. I hunted this year on a weekday opener Sept 15th and just the drop off from first day to second was big.

I've never had elk and deer hunters impact my pronghorn hunts.

I had 64 about 12 years ago. Hunted two days around Sept 21-22 and saw two other trucks. Weather was pleasant and the roads dry.

I hunted a different area than than 64 last year; got there a cpl days after the weekday opener, spent 3 days scouting, partner shot his day 4, I shot mine day 5. We might have seen 10 rigs total. Not a tire track in the area where we killed our bucks, over the last 3 days. Over 200 licenses issued. If I had to hunker down in the dark and shoot it on the the opener I wouldn't even bother.

I personally have a good feel for buck potential in any given year before I even apply for a unit! Believe me, just because 64 is a tough draw doesn’t necessarily mean there will be even 1 B&C buck available in any given year. If all the stars align it may be truly remarkable! There are few tags issued in 64 and there is a lot of public land so the quality experience will likely be a bonus for those fortunate to draw a 64 tag.

64 is a super tough unit to draw. If it were me and I drew a high demand unit and wanted a high B&C scoring buck I would spend as much time as I could scouting and hunting. First priority would be figuring out the buck potential in that particular year. I would name several of the biggest bucks I find scouting and know each of those bucks home ranges and watering holes before the season even started! I would then continue scouting and hunting the biggest buck in 64 until he was dead!

You obviously get out of a hunt what you put into it! My best times in Wyo have actually been the quality time spent while scouting! It's pretty amazing viewing all the country and wildlife when there is no pressure of shooting a buck looming over your head with other hunters roaming the hills. Obviously getting the biggest buck in 64 isn't that important to a lot of guys.

If you just want to hunt a few days in 64 go for it but you may not be doing the tag or yourself justice?
