Sheep Point $$

Very well stated and I agree with most of it, if someone was young enough it might not be a bad idea to build the points. But I do think it some cases the price outweighs what your getting in return by too large of margin.

Just for fun, I've been looking at Stone sheep pricing. Currently $64,000.00 - $78,000.00 with the good outfits and no guarantees.

I don't need one since I was fortunate enough to go in 2003 and lucky enough to actually get a ram but I'm always looking.

Odds run an averages 2 NR hunts for every stone sheep killed. That's 50/50 success odds deal.

Y'all can buy lots of $150 points for that kind of money!

I know, I know, this has nothing to do with what we are talking about.... except it kind of does if it's all about money and odds.

Not to steal your point(no pun intended)
I didn’t make it to the early sheep show to see what prices are this year.
But I do know several Outfits that are still way cheaper than $64,000 -$78,0000
Interesting to see if that holds if you saw it there.
Either way it’s a lot of money for most guys anymore.

Is it for sure switching to bonus points?

Would you recommend that somebody just starting out buy points for sheep? I know I have asked this question to several others so thought I would ask you as well.

I am honestly not trying to get a rise out of anyone just some friendly chit chat/debate.

Mark
The vote tally at the Dec 3rd meeting was to change to squared bonus for the big 5 and allow four years after legislative approval for high PP holders to apply for sheep and moose before it changes. After that if you had 20 PP they will become 20 bonus points and so on...

Fair enough. It’s a different calculation for each of us.

Yeah, you can find hunts for 50K and you'll be going twice....not much of a "bargain"...

So who have you hunted with?
Or who would you recommend for Stone Sheep?
Jerry Garicia with Upper Stikine Outfitters...good friend of mine used to guide for him. I know Dan Montgomery was looking at buying that area from him a number of years ago. I think Bryan Martin may have looked in to it too.

Not sure what the current status is.

Also Brian Simpson had a pretty unique area for Stone/fannin sheep on the Yukon on the Alaska side and killed some awesome rams. A divorce cost him that deal and I should have hunted it when I had the chance.

I did get it right and hunted Dall sheep with Dan Montgomery when the Chugach was OTC.

NWT dall sheep hunts are well over $30k now. Most Alaska hunts are well over $20k as well. Things have gone up about 25% across the board since Covid from what I’ve seen.

Lol
I get the feeling you haven’t actually hunted Stone Sheep? You gave me a real good group to
Look at but you didn’t give me your hunt story?
I was just interested in your experience

Not sure what your point is?

No, I haven't hunted Stone sheep.

point schemes have definitely changed in several states but I don't recall a change that was good for guys with 10+ points. Anyone else remember any?

Another thing that is very funny about this, nonresidents bought almost 12,000 preference points last year, but only 3,000 actually applied for a tag. I am not sure why on earth that would happen, they must think they will just get ten points and then draw a tag when they want. I guess they don’t apply because they don’t want to front the money, but they would be so much better off spending money on credit card interest and getting in the random draw than building points. Better odds for everyone else I guess.

Mark
I have a buddy that purchases points every year and has enough to draw and said he does that because he is waiting to retire and draw a hunt every year and have something to look forward to.
