2021 Harvest Data

Limited entry harvest data is pretty accurate because it is required of every tag holder. Having said that, there is no good reason in our current r age of tech to not require harvest reporting for every hunt and tag issued. That would certainly increase the reliability of the data for all general hunts.

Maybe 2 Lumpy will chime in on why that has not happened.

If that is a good idea you should be able to find a legislator to propose a bill to force the DWR to do it. It shouldn't be too hard but for some reason it never happens.

Get it done if that is what you want.

A few years ago at the central RAC I asked if they would require mandatory reports for all tags. They said that it was too hard for the elderly hunters to use a computer to be able to do that. They have to apply with a computer, why not report? Didnt make any sense to me.

They don't apply with a computer either. I've helped dozens of older people who are computer illiterate. The application guide book says you can apply by phone as well.

March 3: Deadline for permit applications You must apply online or by phone no later than March 3, 2022. There’s an 11 p.m. MST deadline for online applications and a 5 p.m. MST deadline for phone applications. To apply, visit wildlife.utah.gov or call any Division office.

Nobody is more computer illiterate than me and I somehow manage to apply and report harvest. Make harvest reporting for EVERY tag mandatory and punishable by sitting out a year. None of this pay $50 BS and get eligible again. No, sit out a year if you can’t be bothered to report.

So they can apply by phone or visit the office, so why cant they do the same with harvest reports?

I had two major pet peeves when it comes to our system:

1- requiring apps before tag numbers were determined.
2- not requiring harvest surveys on EVERY big game tag in Utah.

1 is fixed starting next year. 2 should be coming. And you should not be able to apply the next year for any tag, preference point or bonus point if you don’t complete your harvest surveys on EVERY big game tag. This will not ensure 100% accuracy, but it doesn’t have to be 100% accurate to still be very useful.
