2 weeks?

To bad all states don’t organize together and have the draws done and posted before the next states apps are due. ???

I know without a doubt that you will know by the end of the day on the 27th.

One year they were like three weeks early or something like that.

Would it be an evil thing to do to post a thread next week (13th) and say "Check your NM applications!"
Nope , I think you should do . And Friday afternoon right before 5pm post that you found the "back door" nd you drew ....Then everybody freaking out all weekend long ....i mean it happens every , kind of like ritual and the newer guys lose their minds..

Notice I said applications and not results :devilish:

Remember the sooner they post results, the sooner you're disappointed. :)

At least that's how the results have played out for me for the last 3 years.

Ive heard rumor of less tag applications this year than years past, anyone else hear the same thing?
Stands to reason there would be less with restrictions lifted around the country and those not so serious hunters can get back to doing whatever they do best. I would venture to say that many first timers realized hunting is not as easy as they thought, the cost is more than they expected and those who lucked into an animal then had to get it out of the field, find a processor and most likely a freezer which was in high demand all of last year due to the shortage. Honestly I hope you’re right. Good luck.

It was approx 8K less , every year until this year it has jumped . With only 61,000 big game tags and nearly 300K applications , there's a bunch that will not draw. At one time it was very much "luck of the draw" back when app numbers were 150K for 50-60K tags , but in the last 10 years with hunter numbers rising , and social media spreading , its only gotten tougher. People want points systems , I dont , just talk to AZ residents who are blue collar , they hate their states system they may archery hunt elk in the better units once every 10 years or longer , where as hunters here in NM that learn the draw odds and harvest reports can literally draw great elk hunts many years in a row .Then they say , Im going to Colorado give my money there!! Ok , go on with it , but look at the majority of OTC units in CO , not alot of animals but no shortage of hunters on atvs,SxS, horseback , hiking road hunting etc , and CO resident hunters saying the same thing , "DONT COME HERE" .. Big game hunting platform is changing before our very eyes , hunters arguing against each other , outfitters against residents and both groups have "sheep dogs" who speak for apparently everyone. The time is now to get active , The game commission meetings need a public voice, social media works , make it work for your benefit. There was once a balance here in NM , MANY have opinions as to what has happened .

and the one people hate the most , NM is popular and outdoorsmen numbers have increased....

I don't have any magic mojo to offer , just a plea for NM hunters to unite in efforts to better our states wildlife and in that offer a balanced effort so our family, friends and ourselves can experience the privileges' we all love so much.

I wonder how many tags the average hunter applies for?

My brother and I applied for four species. One of these years lady luck is going to smoke me and give me all the hunts. Then I have to explain to the wife how I got really lucky! :)

Good luck in the draws.

I put in for everything except Javelina, so 7 apps every year. Most I've drawn in one year was 3 I believe. I've only been completely Red 1 year, I usually always get at least a 3rd choice deer tag.

I usually apply for everything. Have been sick the last little over year, so cut down to just elk and deer for me. Kids and wife still go in for almost everything.

Everything you say is true. But, when we do put in our input, it seems to go on deaf ears. The vote goes for whatever they proposition a lot of the times. Even if public input is five to one against it. At least, that is how it feels to me.

Putting the brakes on depredation, just like california did, is going to have a huge impact on the state. Everyone was against it, aside from leftist groups, but they still did it. I know a few units that were mismanaged. 17 is a prime deer example. Left tags high until it was too late. It is still a good unit, but was so much better twenty years ago. If they would have cut tags sooner, that deer population would still be thriving. I haven't hunted it in a few years, may be great again. But, can't draw it. lol

Poaching needs to be stopped, but like you said, if no one is willing to turn the poacher in, it never will. There simply aren't enough officers in the field to stop it. It is rare to see an officer in the field while hunting, let alone off season. I think my whole life I may have seen five or six in the field. That is not a complaint on the officers, but that there aren't nearly enough, like you stated.

Drought and moisture will always play a role in the population. I know of areas that have habitat improvements done that are tremendous for the animals. A lot of bad as well. I live in cruces, and allowing the rio to go completely dry year after year has decimated areas that I knew held deer, javelina, and others. Again, something we don't have a lot of control over, but you'd think they could pump a little water in areas that hold wildlife to sustain them. There really isn't a lot more we can do about that, unless we knew how to control the weather.

I’ve known Game Wardens who would arrest their own mothers if given a chance. I’ve yet to meet one who didn’t follow up on any information passed on to him. It’s a very tough job as during their peak work days everybody they encounter in the field is carrying a gun. My hat off to them.

Just curious what you all think about requiring hunters safety in NM. I wonder how many of applicants hold a HS certificate and how in the application pool would renew say every four years if that were a requirement to put in for the draw?

It’s a good idea for those under 18 and new hunters. I don’t want to renew mine every 4 years. I took that course when I was nine years old.

I Agree there. There are some really strict ones. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. My hats off to them as well. They are so few in number, there is no way to solve every problem, or see everything. I wish the state would put more resources into it. I really do.

I put in 2 apps ...

As for depredation , in the way of the trapping ban , I don't trap but I also do not agree with it the ban on trapping , but the Dems got their wish yet again . However I do e-call hunt through the winter and that maybe gets better, time will tell . A rancher from the TA area called me last week to go help him with coyotes and his place was covered up with them and with no trapping on public I see them really increasing in numbers ...Its fun to have them come into calls , but after a full morning of nonstop coyotes within 3-5 miles I see a huge problem with beef operations , but thats talk for a different thread..

I don't think it would affect anything because anyone can do it for you online.

I also have seen a major increase. Live on the outskirts of cruces, on the east mesa, and I have noticed a lot more where I live. Back yard connects to blm, and I go out there and shoot them with my bow from time to time. They stay close to the houses though, and take out people's pets. Don't really come in to calls. They have become very abundant in the past year.

I think everyone should have to speak into a microphone headset and spell Chrysanthemum and use it in a sentence before their application can begin.

That might help.
Chrysanthemum? Now you're just making up words. :)

This year I swear I'm going to wait for the emails instead of logging into my account every 3 minutes for the next few weeks.

I’d be curious to know the positive financial impact the last few years have had on the game and fish budget. Also curious if fishing license sales have increased at the same rate. I hate to sound so jaded but I am afraid excess $$ at the state level just means more wasteful spending. Hopefully the Pittman Robertson Act does a good job of keeping that on the up and up.

I tallied it up then other day for applications and license fees alone and posted it in another thread. I would quote myself wrong if I tried to without looking at it, but I want to say $12 to 14 million for both residents and non residents together.

Yes sir, I’m talking about the Money that will be returned for all of you who don’t draw.
App money isn't returned and neither are sold game tags through the draw. Those figures are from what is given after the draw, so to answer your assumption, they are net.

As an AZ resident our elk and deer apps were up like 17k from last year and that was up like 18k from the year before. I dont mind the bonus system, but people need to pay upfront. We charge $13 and a license to take an app, so everyone and their brother puts in here. Constantly hear stories about people with zero to 1 bonus point drawing tags that others are 30+ years into and have never been draw. So there's always a chance here which is good, but it does get frustrating.

Hopefully things are changing a bit with the trail cam ban this year as that might make it more difficult for some as they have to put in the time now. The recent recommendations for deer show a decline in some of the prime units as well, so hopefully there will be rebound in the next several years.

Thanks.
