New Mexico

I am hoping to hit the ball right over the fence into your unit lol. JK where do you hunt anyways? Wilderness in 52 I believe I've seen that horse in your profile picture up there..
Pretty conservative here in the draws, so long as my kids can pull some green that's the world for me. I'm ready for sure.

Yessir! I'm sure you seen him stumbling around up there before. ?
I might just have to catch that one at the wall Adam hahaha! Good luck man! I think it's your year! Gotta good feeling!

Lol to funny. Hey I now hope your knee limits your jumping ability. Jk that's pretty low. I'll just swing a little harder I guess.

If you draw p.m. me and I'll help you out with info in there! Upmost respect for our military! I'm in for elk , deer ,and barbs. I will apply for BH, oryx, and ibex Tuesday, just so they don't hold on to that money TO LONG before I get it back haha

Will do; thanks.

I grew up in Chama as a young boy (grand parents are buried there) so a couple additional reasons to get back to that area.

Good luck on the other hunts, especially the BH....would be awesome hunt!

I'm in!!!! Praying I do better than 1/7 as I did last year with my 1 hit being a 3rd choice. Beats 0/7. I'll be out there even if it is only with my camera....

For fun, what do you guys think are the top 5 rifle elk hunts in NM? The one thing that's always turned me off slightly is that the rifle bull dates aren't ideal.

I think im out this year and for the foreseeable future. Losing yet another tag here and there with the welfare pool still 10% finally did it. Ive applied 15 years in a row and given a lota money and time but enuff is enuff. When the pool % changes or welfare tags go away ill get back in but for now there is a litter higher draw odds for all u addicts of the nm lottery system and im ok with that.

Do you NM guys find that there is still decent rut action beyond 10/10 down there?

Up here we tend to see it be about wrapped up by the 10th-15th, give or take. Occasionally you can get into some bugling in mid to late Oct here, but those are typically the raghorns taking advantage of sloppy seconds, in my experience.

I drew a first rifle hunt a few years back and the action was great! I'm sure it depends on the year and unit...

Yes ! Finally!! ...after going 0 for 6 in the steep and deep of SW Colorado (and driving thru northern NM each trip-dreaming of hunting THERE) finding new help from Gina and Mark Chavez just might make it happen. No longer a young man and certainly never a wealthy one - time convinced me to go for it. Quite possibly my last elk hunt...second archery...SOMEWHERE in the Land of Enchantment. Life is GOOD !

Apply a kid yours or borrowed and do the youth unit 34 rifle hunt next year. First week of oct - bulls still in full swing. I took my step daughter a few years ago, had chances at several and got a nice 285/290 inch big 5 pt. One of the best elk hunting experiences I have had outside of AZ anyway.

Not me. But I did draw a non resident unit 16 antelope tag. I beat some amazingly horrible odds, looking forward to that.

Love unit 34 Elk. Had the youth rifle tag about five years ago with my daughter, great hunt.

BUGLEnmIN...I got lucky...drew First Rifle Elk in 52! My young nephew did as well!!

Those beloved MTNs are calling...hopefully so too are the elk this fall! Most likely Post-rut given that time...I am stoked!!

We hunt mid October in northern NM and the bugling is sparse in the morning, but it will still raise the hair on the back of your neck.

Applied for just about everything this year. Elk in 52, Deer in 37, off range oryx, Antelope in the southwest and so on. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
Deer is relatively close to home for you huh? We’ll here’s to you and me drawing a tag ??

I always swing for the fences in NM
My batting average is just above zero though
I usually can't even get a walk!

It took me 9 years to draw my first NM elk tag. I let my brother party draw that year (his first year applying in NM). The next year I drew WY so didn’t apply for NM. My brother put in and drew NM the next 2 years in a row. Crazy how that works.

I'm in for the draws, but will need a lot of luck. The random draw is fun because at least you know you have a chance, even if it's small.

Who has ever been contacted about population reduction hunts? I remember back when they assigned you a number to show where you were on the list.

Was real close one year when they assigned you a number, but didn't make it.

Was told by the special hunts coordinator one year that when they switched they try to call those "closest" to the hunt area. What that means I don't know.

That doesn't sound good.

One year I drew a bull tag and was assigned a good number. They removed me from the population reduction list because I drew the tag (you can only have 1 elk license). I think I was number 17 and they called about 100 hunters that year.

I'm in, been averaging a tag every 9 years since the early 2000's and this isn't the 9th year. Still remember the '80's - early 2000's when a NR unguided could draw just about every year.

Deer
Elk
Oryx
Antelope

Done! Now honestly I will be happy if I can just draw one of them. My favorite hunt is elk. Best meat also in my opinion.
