Stupid question

So I’m thinking of hunting cow elk with a 30-30 what has been your experience with hunting elk with a 30-30. It’s my great grandmas gun if possible I’m going to try and harvest a cow given the opportunity.
Do you handload or shoot factory? mtmuley

You can kill them with a recurve, compound, and muzzleloader. So too you can kill them with a 30-30. I never have, but wouldn’t hesitate on a low-pressure cow hunt, I’m certain it won’t bounce off the hide! Keep shots close and broadside through two lungs and you probably won’t notice much of a difference from any other rifle. Make a marginal or bad shot…well…..don’t.

no matter what bullet you use......it is a 150 yard elk gun.
Maybe, maybe not. Have some Hammers to load in mine. Not my Granny's rifle but my Grandfather bought it new. Model 94. Might stretch it a bit with the Hammers. Besides, 150 yards is all a guy needs as far as distance. mtmuley

That’s a sweet gun.
I have that exact same Peepsight on my grandpas old Remington pump 22.
I have shot one of those model 94 30-30 years ago. If I remember correctly they kick pretty hard.

I have my Grand dad's too.....but a carbine....that rifle is way cooler looking, although...the crescent buttplate on the rifle is brutal for recoil...

Do it, I did with my grandfather's 30-30 a few years ago. Then cleaned it an put it back in the safe for my boy when he gets old enough.

Yep have two of my grandpa's also. One has the ring on the side and was packed in a saddle for so many years that it is curved like the horses side/belly. Still shoots, but would use the other one if going to shoot something with a 30-30. Have to put that on the bucket list.

I e actually considered doing something similar with one of my grandfathers rifles. It’s a model 52 he ordered new from the fact when he was 16. It’s a beautiful rifle. Still has the original peep sight in perfect condition. My thoughts were for deer but my reservation is it’s s 25-20. I know it’s legal for deer snd he hunted white tails with it but it sure is a small round and not a lot of ammo options out there. I may still one day and just hunt like its archery. Get inside 50 yards. Dad told me pop would always shoot them in the head. That may or may not be true but thats the story

a winchester??....the only winchester 52 I and familiar with is a bolt action 22

I may have that mixed up. Model 53. I’ve been told it’s a rare one but I e never had it looked at. Not that the model 53 is real rate but the fact that this one is stainless. Oppa ordered it that way. I’m told if you wanted stainless steel in 1926 you had to order it. They blued everything regardless and stainless would not hold the finish so they weren’t off the shelf. Maybe some of you Winchester guys know more

JP, I believe your Pop.

So now we know there’s honesty in the bloodline……..somewhere. Sometimes it skips a generation, they say.

Ha ha, ha……. You set that one up too well to not take a swipe at it……. Just teasing ya JP…… don’t burn my house down tonight, okay….

I went through a period of head shooting almost everything. When my kids were young and money was hard to come by I was mostly a meat hunter. In the last 70’s and 80’s after I’d started mostly muzzleloader hunting I found myself chasing wounded deer and elk for hours and even days, for both myself and other muzzleloading buddies…….. too dang often. We were all shooting Hawken style open sight round balls, a 100 yards or less… kind of stuff. After too many nights out with a lantern, looking for a wound deer, I made an executive decision. No more body shots on anything, it’s a head shoots or nothing. I figured……… they die, where they stand or they leave unscathed. I’m not tracking another wounded critter all day or night.

Never regretted it. I missed a few but not many. And……. it actually seemed to improve my accuracy……… May have been that “aim small, hit small” sort of thing.

As wobbly as I am now days, maybe I should do back to that…….accept I haven’t meat hunted for years…….. Bullets are not great on antlers…..I’ve found that to be true, a time or two as well.

Try that one on your bullwinkle!

All in good fun lumpy. No worries. I believe it too knowing my grandpa. Dad said his shot was right behind the ear always. He was hunting white tails over in New York and Maine. So hard wood forest and close quarters. I never got to hunt with that man. I often think about how much he would have loved Idaho. Been gone 33 years now. I just may have to get his rifle out on a buck one of these years

I think you should…….. I think you might be surprised at what kind of emotion you might feel…… out slipping through the trees with that in tow. All the best.
