My soon to be 14 year old Cache North archery elk with one bonus point, Better to be lucky than good! Is there any good private to get on in that unit? Trespass fee? Who knows that unit well ?

Very limited vehicle access. Roads in most of the main drainages but after that you are on foot. Last year had a strong rut and helped the harvest but traditionally it is very low success. I suggest get in as good as shape as possible. Pretty much all public land.

There is a couple pieces of Private land above Richmond that hold elk. I don’t know of anybody that has ever been given permission to access it and hunt. If you want to try PM me and I can give you names of the landowners if you want to try.

My son and I are both workin on the shape factor to improve our chances. He’s in the prime of his life at 14 and hitting the weight room 5-6 days a week plus sports. I don’t think we need private land access for this one but with a kid it always seems easier to obtain. I wanted to thank everyone who’s been willing to comment and provide any help whatsoever so far. I’ll keep you in the loop on how this saga unfolds. LG!

Hunted it last year with a brother. Can be frustrating or good. Helps if they are vocal towards the middle to end of hunt. Water holes would likely be his best bet early for his first bull with a bow the first half of the season. I think 5 out of 18 hunters were successful in archery hunt last year. I know 3 out of the 5 that punched their tag. I'll be looking around this summer, might have some info for you later. Good luck.

5 of 18 not terrible! I wonder how many were holding out?

I’m gonna spend some time in there in July and run a few cameras see what we can learn about where some good rutting grounds may be.

We won't show up until Sept 20th or so, that is the plan at least for now but that could change. As much time as I have put into this and it's only been a week, Sept is going to take forever!

Heading out next week into the area to do some scouting and set some cameras with my son. Any snow up high?

20th is a good date but double check when the Gen Muzzy Buck hunt dates start/are going on. I think ya might have some overlap and Plenty of company! from the deer hunters.

General Muzzle loader deer starts Sept 28th. Could have an effect on the last couple days of the hunt. If you only had 10 days to hunt the 16-26 days you may want to consider. Plenty of water and feed so far.

Still a little snow above Tony Grove and on the highest north slopes. It was warm in the 80’s yesterday at 8500 feet.

Some nice bulls, quite a few rag horns, not too many cows and calves. Should start talking in a week I hope. If I had 10 days to hunt, it still maybe the 16-26, give or take a day or two. No cameras, makes it harder to keep an eye on moving bulls from summer to rut areas. Still a good thing in the long run IMO. Fun to scout and look. Keep us posted. If you have a hard time finding elk after a couple days, PM me.

I’ll update the site with some frequency. Thank you for the offer to help my son, I appreciate it. I couldnt imagine us not finding elk if we cover ground but you never know. The hunt is almost on!

The smoke this morning is thick. Their advising people not to be outside more than necessary because of air quality. You can not see the Wellsville mountains from mid valley. With that said the temperature is Upper 40’s in the valley which is positive. Temperatures are forecast for a downward trend and the smoke should clear mid next week as a weak storm front pushes in.

That damn smoke seems to be September’s norm anymore. Let’s hope it pushes out with the change in weather.

No bugles last night or this morning. Walked right into a 320” bull, he never responded to cow calls or bugles. Lots of smoke.

I hunted the unit the past two years. There are some nice bulls. two years ago archery success was 30%. Some pretty good bugle action. My brother shot a good bull. Last year the elk were not as vocal. Not sure on success rate. I would guess around 30% again. Not many cows may have contributed to less bugling. It was a harder hunt. If you want a longer archery season, can hike pretty well, and a chance to hunt bugling bulls, with an expectation of 30% success, it's not a bad unit. Personally, I wouldn't burn more than 8 points. Some units have more cows and more vocal bulls, which is the fun of archery hunting elk. My thoughts.

Thanks huntin50. I have been on the north cache before. We hunted south cache for cow elk last fall. My son eneded up getting a cow. Actually heard lots of bulls bugling and saw some nice bulls as well. The south cache is harder to draw according to odds. I know there is some nice bulls on north cache. I was curious if they were successful on the hunt.

Responding to Matt. Hunt was crowded even for the limited amount of tags. Seems like most hunters are hitting all the same spots. We tried cow calling and never had any luck with that. We only saw cow elk the first day, the rest were bulls without cows, even the third week of Sept. Country is thick so it's tough to tell how big or small these bulls were. We didn't see any giants but my son did kill a bull. We didn't see any other bulls in the truck

Nice man. Glad to hear he got a bull! Thanks for responding
