Archery: Ambush or Spot and Stalk

Hey, everyone,

Semi-new resident to Nevada. Long story short, been a rifle hunter since I learned (in Alaska moose, black bear, brown bear, musk ox, etc) Nobody I hunted with used archery. But, over the last year or so I’ve slowly been picking up archery (for the better draw odds and more opportunity).

Anyway, I was curious about people with bow hunting experience in Nevada: Are you mostly spot and stalk hunting in most units or does anyone employ sit and wait/ ambush tactics?

In conversations in bowhunting/archery forums a few people have suggested that as I improve in skill, ambush/sit and wait would be much more feasible for finding success as I learn.

Anyone here made the switch from rifle to archery? I’m kicking myself for atleast not picking up that skill when there was plenty of live practice available.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yep, agreed. Spot and stalk. Get there before first light because those big boys hate the sun as much as vampires. Also, keep an eye when you bed them initially. Some of them will get up and move to their final bedding spot where they will tend to stay until dinner time.

For deer spot and stalk or ambush, elk calling mostly sometimes spot and stalk, Antelope ambush on water, spot and stalk is very difficult in most terrain.

Unless you are able to pattern the deer for several days or weeks prior, the ambush tactic seems to be very tough. Not that spot and stalk is easy by any means, just seems to be more successful with way more action and opportunity. Just my opinion and experience.

Spot and stalk is really the only way and it's hard AF? just get to high ground before light and find some deer. After you find them, you have to watch them until they bed. Sometimes they move too far and with the open country it's hard to stay on top of them.
