CA Draws

That's what I thought.....but the answer from them inferred that we only had raffles because of covid....and shut down banquets

I think they have to be posted within 10 business days of the deadline. That would be Thursday, June 16th but they usually post them a few days early.

Stop that--no you don't! I called dibs YEARS ago!
Maybe we both get one. 1:85 odds for what I put in for. If I remember correctly one unit had 1:33 odds for max points. If I was younger and could spend a month out there I would of apply for the better odds.
Wish you luck.

Fine! Wish you luck too...I guess. ;)

I wonder how long the ponzi scheme (points system) stays in place as is? It's a race to draw a sheep tag before that or dying. I am a have and still go for what I think has best draw odds for my privileged first in status. I know it will be a tough hunt for a now old guy, but I'll have fun hunting it as hard as I can if I get lucky enough to draw:)

"This year, all the fundraising tags were made available to nonprofits who are returning to normal operations and scheduling their in-person fundraising events to support their conservation work."

That seems ''Just a Tad" disingenuous to pass the decision off as being Covid-related. The raffle tags had been offered for many years running, long before the pandemic.

Even if that statement had validity, the "conservation groups" across the west have never stopped holding auctions, and the prices obtained have been high as ever, in-person or not.

Very true, but having the cachet of "golden opp" tag or "open zone" tag, etc., generally makes it a big deal at in-person fundraisers. Doesn't sound too far-fetched to want to reward the non-profit groups after the Covid crap.

Who is following the money trail?

Lik2hnt &Snoopdogg, You guys crack me up. Thinking you’ll draw a sheep tag. The odds of that are so low…

But somebody’s gonna get drawn! At least you no longer have me competing for one of those coveted tags…

You dirty rotten so-and-so! You're posing with my sheep and are rubbing it in. Bastard! ;)

Nice ram! When did you draw?

P.S. I was 2nd alternate in 2011 for Sheep Hole's and this year I'm drawing!

You may have your chance next year at that unit again.

Also it looks like a newberry ram to me.

Snoop, I drew in 2020. I’d applied every single year that California offered sheep tags, 34 years. I was 1st alternate for Marble/Clipper about 17-18 years ago, then drew in 2020.
it was definitely worth the wait, one of the most enjoyable hunts I’ve done.

BradA, Newberry Ram.

My uncle was first alternate for Marble/Clippers in 2016 and 2021. Hope this year he finally gets the tag.
Think I would hate to know if I was an alternate. All that suspense and then not getting the tag. But then again, it was a pain last year getting an email 4 weeks before season for my Colorado Mtn Goat.

My brother was the first alt for the White Mnts a couple of years ago, we were joking around about if it was bad for him to hope bad luck on one of the tag holders! It must have been since he didn't get it

Hoping at least one of you guys on this site draws their sheep tag this year! Good luck everyone!

Yeah I hope so as well I enjoy getting to see and follow along on the sheep hunts that MM members draw, let’s just hope that they post there story and results!

I draw my deer hunts pretty regularly because I don't pursue the holy grails. I drew speedgoats in 2018 and took my 2.5 y/o midget with and he had a blast. Hoping elk and sheep turn real soon.

I broke my ankle in 2017 after drawing the Marbles/Clippers roughly 2 weeks before the season opened.

I seriously considered turning my tag in and was making calls to the CDF&W from my hospital bed on my options. While I could have had my points reinstated to max again the draw odds were still on the order of 1:500 of drawing again in the max tag pool. CA will not defer the tag for medical reasons,

My outfitter said he thought we could get it done even if I was on crutches so I decided to keep the tag. I was off crutches by mid-January but still pretty limited mobility wise. Glad I kept my tag!

Broke your ankle 2 weeks before a sheep hunt? OMG......glad you were able to still hunt. But...this clip came to mind....

That’s a classic!

Yeah after climbing in the cliffs chasing mountain goats in CO in the snow in October I break my ankle in the foothills of CA deer hunting when my ankle wedged in the rocks and wouldn’t release when I fell. Go figure!

Luckily I had a great surgeon, an outstanding outfitter who understood my limitations, and a long season that allowed me to get off my crutches before the season closed so I could make good on my tag…

Murphys law that you would break it in Cali on an "easier" hunt, right? Glad it worked out for you...

Didn't draw chit....expected to get X1 with 3 points.... oh well.

B zones for me. Maybe I will find the big one that gave me the slip last year....

My wife just drew a Newberry Sheep tag! She has way better luck in the drawings than I ever will, but I get to go along!!!

If anyone has any advice for the Newberry Mnts we would be very grateful, good luck to everyone
Congrats Devon....that is so cool.

Devbrodie, I drew that tag in 2020. It’s a great tag! I’ll be happy to discuss with you offline. I’ll send you a PM with my number. If you’re going guided, I suggest you call Cliff or Matt St. Martin of Dry Creek Outfitters right away.

I have hunted that unit a few times.

Nice! I would seriously consider hiring a guide for that hunt.

This year I won't be hunting out of state...got elk and antelope with max points, and X3b with no points.

I second that recommendation.

First Period Lassen Pronghorn for me. Any advice, information, or witty responses about how I don't have one tied to a tree after waiting 20 years are greatly appreciated.
Congratulations I hope to draw that tag one day, be sure to share with us your success.

My WIfe and I hunted in that unit back in 2008, not sure if our info is still valid, but if you want to shoot me a PM with your number and I will call you and tell you what we saw back then if you want

If you don’t mind the question how many points did 6a take you? I know someone who didn’t draw with 5, seems to be getting more creep.
I had 7. Drew last year with 6, but turned it in due to closures about couple weeks before season . As it turned out, the access to get the area I planned to hunt opened, but I’d already turned in tag….ggrrrrr (so I knew I’d draw it this year).

Last year odds with 5 pts was ~ 40%, I’d guess it was down to 20% or less odds with 5 this year. Your buddy should draw next year.

I had 5 and didn’t draw the 6A archery tag.

3x2, you need to turn that tag back to Fish & Wildlife. I’m the number 1 alternate for that hunt. So hurry up and turn your tag in. ?
Being the #1 alternate I'd say your chances of getting a tag are pretty dang good. No ill wishes on any of the people who drew but sometimes life just gets in the way. I know a guy who was the #5 alternate for Likely Tables several years ago and he got a tag.

Much appreciated, I’ll Pm you as soon as my 24 “message waiting period” is up.

Everybody has a price, let the bidding begin!
Funny anecdote. About 15 or so years ago, I was the number 1 alternate for a Marble-Clipper sheep tag. I called fish & game every couple weeks, asking if anyone had turned their tag back. Nobody did and several months after the season I was talking with an acquaintance who hunts sheep all over the world and the first thing he asked me was “Why didn’t you offer the tag holders a payment to turn their tag back in?” I never thought of that. On the sheep tag, I would have.

I'm not sure the alternate would pay enough on an antelope tag because you can hunt antelope every year if willing to drive to Wyoming. But sheep... There was a financial advisor big bucks banquet guy who suggested a first alternate pay a tag holder to turn down the sheep tag. He may have accomplished it himself. Considering the price of a non-draw Mexico, reservation or auction hunt, that might be quite a bit of money if the alternate was willing and able to pay. $50k might be a good place to start negotiating.

Think it was 2016, I was #7 alternate, and got a tag for the tables..weird stuff happens, good luck.
