First Nevada cow elk hunt for me
At age 70 going to give it a try
Never been to 061 or 071 units before
Looking for any help getting this old guy started in the right area
Thanks

I camped at Big Bend campground and hunted Tennessee mountain (unit 71) for a cow elk two years ago. There was smoke from the California fires in there thick. Good elk country lots of places to hunt. I seen only two elk one cow and one bull. I had a shot at the cow at 346 yards but passed because I was worried about getting her out. You can hunt right from big bend campground. Good roads all around. Hope this helps a little.

My girlfriend and I hunted early season last year. The hunt info and biologists say to get away from roads to increase your chances. 1) That's next to impossible when you consider all the two tracks on most of the mountains and 2) Most of the elk we saw were less than 600 yards from the roads. Saw 6 cow at dusk the night before opener. Didn't see a single elk the next 2 days. Saw 3 cow elk crossing road about 100 yards in front of us the 3rd day (sun rising right behind them). Saw roughly 25 to 30 elk per day the next two days. Harvested 1. Another day and we likely could have harvested another.

They sure like to hide in the timber pockets right off the roads.

Thanks any suggestion on where to start?

I’ve spent some time in there. It can be a difficult hunt because so many tags are given out other hunters tend to bump the elk.

This is a very high pressure area. We found success locating high points that allowed us to glass a long ways and made sure we were there at first light. The elk would disappear into the aspen or timber pockets right at day break.

The elk are kind of sporadic in 61. One year the herd will be around Merritt mountain, other years further to the west and north.

071 seems to always hold elk near the border with 072. Don’t discount hunting near the ID border as well.
