The youth I mean secondary draw list is out.?

MI don't mind that CPAW has a youth draw but they should market it like that and only allow youth to apply, otherwise it seems pretty shady collecting application money for a bunch of tags that have very little chance of being drawn by anyone other than youth

Well said. I don’t know why an adult would apply.
I’m thinking of starting my own competing draw (you know like the LIV)
Calling it the “No Chance Draw”.
1. Similar to the Secondary Big Game draw it will cost $7/9. (Or just send me $10 if you don’t have any singles)
2. Similar to the Secondary Big Game draw, you won’t receive a tag.
Benefits:
1. No time spent filling out an application!
2. I’m telling you up front, you’re not going to receive $hit.
3. The money I receive will be donated to worthy organization, not the CPW.
Disclaimer; this my not be in several states, including NY, CA, IL (these are the ones I always see in these types of statements)
missing the word “legal”.

What I don’t understand is if a person returned/failed to pay for their tag why isn’t the tag offered to someone next in line in the points pool first? If there aren’t any point holders left then I can understand it going to the secondary draw.
Why not give people with the points a chance first? It would remove more point holders from the pool in theory creating less point creep also.

My reading comprehension is pretty good, trust me.

How about the mass mailing e-mail sent by the CPAW a couple of days ago:

Apply For The Secondary Big Game Draw!

Most elk, deer, pronghorn and bear licenses not issued through the primary draw are available in the secondary draw, which is open to anyone, whether you applied for the primary draw or not. It’s your chance to get licenses remaining from the primary draw without having to wait until leftover day!

This is the type of shady marketing I'm referring to
I was just going bring this up… the marketing was super shady… they need to have youth get 100% preference in all caps is what they need

I like this, I do like the leftover list too. But this would be fair to me.

The leftover/reissue list I understand since many of those tags are a month or less until season starts. For the secondary draw it would make sense to have people use points for tags and eliminate more from the pool.
Also there are people returning tags while others with the same points didn’t draw and would certainly use the tag and burn their points.

Guess they didn’t want them….
Guess not but I’m sure other people in the same point pool that didn’t draw did. That’s why I think the tag should be offered to another in the same point pool before being added to the secondary draw.
Or conduct the secondary draw like the first and use points for 1st choice only.

Maybe will be that way someday. And they already do that on high point tags. But with current methods (someone actually calling you), they don’t have the man power (and money?). Think about it: call someone, leave a voicemail, give that person 48 hrs to call back. Then give them a few days to tell you yes or no, ect. If no, go to next on the list. Repeat.

I am sure it is prob doable, but they would have to write a program to email you with a link to click on to tell them yes/no. But that program might go rogue and hand out too many tags one year, like the drawing a few years ago ?

I really like the idea of using points for first choice in the second drawing.

One might expect this will get worse as more folks find about that new "brief period after the primary draw" when they can return a tag and get back BOTH points and money. This will push more tags to youth/secondary draw and avoid reissue (adults).

You should be thankful that CO never restores points +1 (for current year) the way NV does. That is what causes NV re-issue (FCFS) to be even more ripe with RES return tags.

CO & NV are the only states that had to come up with asinine reissue programs because they are the only states (generally) that have easy "any reason" return policies. Increasing risky application behavior and tag shopping.

We all love easy return state when we need to get out of a tag - but think carefully about how these states reacted to all these returned tags (they both couldn't resist selling the tag again rather than punting it to next year). And they both are doing it in ways contributing to point creep.

I'm in agreement that it shouldn't be 100% youth preference. Maybe give 50% to youth as their 1st choice or something? I do agree seniors should get some preference as well. A youth has lots of hunts ahead of them, but how many do most 70 + year olds have? There are several returned tags for a hunt that I didn't draw with 7 NR points and now several people will get it for 0 points. Why shouldn't I have some preference for that tag? There's no way to make us all happy I guess!

How does the choices in draw work as far as the order? If I want to try and pick up an easy tag should I put that one 1st or swing for the fences that one makes it past the youth draw
Thanks

Not really. No adult should put in for any tag that didn’t at least go to the 2nd choice on the first drawing.

2 things are different this year than last:

More people with kids know about youth preference.

More adults know they don’t have a prayer on any decent tags for the secondary drawing.

Use that to make an intelligent decision.

I agree with most on here. If they want to give youth preference that is fine with me, but have the second draw be a youth only drawing and THEN have a list of available tags for the old guys in a third drawing.

I am putting in for a bear tag in the unit that I drew a deer tag in the regular drawing.

My son is going to put in for the same unit that he DIDN'T draw as his second choice in the regular drawing. It is most likely going to be a donation. It is frustrating that he didn't draw but now there are tags for that same unit back on the table. But we have spent $9 on worse things.

Ok. Doesn’t look good that it still shows “entered”. In my experience, that means no joy. I hope everybody has great hunts this fall

2 bear tags and a pronghorn buck tag for my crew so far.... got a hit for deer but not sure which one yet. Elk is next.

I’ll be damned my nephew drew a deer tag and he’s not a youth…. So there is still hope for the adults. ?

I got an unsuccessful email on my attempt for a second bear tag. I thought 25 tags was enough to overcome the youth preference but I guess not.
Those Dads… I mean kids need those tags or they won’t ever hunt and the woods will be empty in 5 years, didn’t you know that

My nieces and son drew 3 deer tags and 3 cow tags. Time to fill the freezer! Going to try and get my son his first deer and elk.

Got everything I needed in the secondary draw and got like 15 buddies what they needed, not sure where all the negativity comes from I think it’s a good deal. Yes I understand that the so called good units and by good units I mean the one’s that take too many points might not draw or will go to youth, but hey I hunt a unit that has tags in the secondary and tags left over and we do just fine and probably better than most do in the so called premium units!!!!

Find a good private ranch to hunt and learn the ranch for years of hunting the same property in a unit you can draw every year and you will do fine, and yes I mean NW and in some conversations on MM people say there’s no more mature bucks and I agree the DOW is a S show with what they have done, but there is still great hunting for really good bucks on private ground in the NW . If you wanna play you gotta pay and that’s just the way it is anymore. Some might not agree but hey it is what it is .

I picked up a bunch of tags in the secondary for my buddies to go with me after they struck out trying to get the over point units and after they see what we can do in a unit they can draw every year they won’t have to worry about it. All I am saying is Colorado is going in the wrong direction for Deer for sure ,but it’s probably still the best bet at a chance for a quality Buck and some monsters still roam out there and Colorado is trying to add opportunities to go with the secondary draw and return tags. Yes it’s about not letting any money get away, but hey what other state offers you a chance at a secondary draw and or a chance to buy returned tags every week starting in August? Coming full circle back to the youth, yes they have priority in units with very few tags to start with and so be it if a dad or grandpa can get a kid out hunting as a last minute option, all in all that’s not a bad thing really, is it?

My “son” drew his deer tag. Keep in mind that he is 26 so no “youth” preference. It’s a bummer that he had to put in for it again even though it was his second choice in the first draw. At least we will now both have tags for the same unit/hunt. We also both picked up bear tags.

Sounds like they could have drawn it in the primary draw as a second choice.

I drew a leftover deer tag as a non-resident. 2nd Choice DM02301M Antlrd Mzzldr 023. I was somewhat surprised. I think there was 8 tags leftover. I plan on doing a backpack into the wilderness-style hunt. Opens on September 10th. I have never been in this area so it will be all new figuring it out. Has anyone had that can tell me what I am getting into? Thanks!
