Recreation Access

SPI California Forestlands Closed to Public Access Due to Drought and Wildfire Danger
Due to extreme drought and wildfire conditions, Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) has closed its California forestlands to public access, effective Fri., July 1. This closure will remain in effect until further notice. Public roads that are on SPI forestlands will remain open, but no walk-in access will be allowed. For those looking for maps of SPI property lines, there are several third-party applications available for purchase.

Again...

National Forests probably aren’t far behind. Anyone want to guess the date they will close to access due to fire danger this year?
A big chunk of Sequoia National Forest is closed already from the SQF, French and Windy Fires in D8. This will be the 3rd year in a row haven't been able to hunt my usual area. Sucks.

My guess is right around the bow opener in B zones....what do I win?
I am doubtful it will be that long before the FS closes down. I'm thinking around the middle of July unfortunately.

Thankfully the thunder storms that moved through the Eastern Sierra last week/weekend came with a bit of rain. Otherwise I think there would have been a bunch of fire starts. As it was, they were able to knock down the few that did pop up close to Mammoth.

Funny thing. I was out looking around a lot of SPI's clearcut/replants last week and found they had thinned many of the replants that are in my area. Thing is, all those cut down dead pines are just laying there making an absolute tinderbox, prime for lightning or a tossed cigarette. Seems like piss poor management to me. Theyll damn sure take all the government money (taxpayers) and all the taxpayer firefighting money though.

Have you seen what it looks like after they go through and poison all the hardwoods and brush? They leave ton of dead wood and brush.

I hunted SPI land for years and harvested countless bucks, bears, and other game on their property. I also enjoyed a ton of great fishing using their land as walk-in access. While it was so good while it lasted, I always knew there would come a day when access would be limited or closed. While it's frustrating, I also understand that they are a private company managing private property and trying to survive in a state that is pretty hostile toward them.

Sad deal for sportsmen who have hunted, fished, and recreated on that land for generations starting back when SPRR owned it all.--SS

The only SPI land I've hunted is on the west side and most of it is isolated sections here and there surrounded by NF land. I haven't seen any spraying or hardwood removal.
