Back country horseback elk hunt...

Hey Grizzly, I hunted with Josh this past October. Like you, I wanted a horse back hunt in grizzly country. I burned 14 preference points to get the area 62 tag. After an enjoyable horseback ride into camp, my guide Sam and I glassed several shooter bulls on the mountain across the river. The next morning, Sam and I rode out before daylight and by 830, we had elk meat on the ground. 537 yards, one shot. The furthest I’ve ever killed anything.
Josh‘s outfit was incredible in every way. Camp, horses, location, cook, guides, wranglers, everything. I have 18 sheep points and I hope to go back when I draw that tag.
The memories I have from this hunt are priceless. All I can say is JUST DO IT!

Did I see this in eastmans?
I also went with Josh and had a super time. 61&62 will take near max points to draw though. I have also had some great hunts with Wapiti Ridge outfitters. I understand that JJ is outfitting again after a few years off but I don't know any details about what hunts he may be doing. I'm going into the Thorofare next year with Constant Quest. That hunt has been on my bucket list for awhile.

Ozark Trail camp chairs….sponsored by Walmart eh? Jk, nice bull man. Looks like a good time. Would love to do a horseback hunt for elk once in my life. It’s on the bucket list.

2 years ago prices went up a lot and in the future they will. Lot of people don't understand its an expensive operation. Between scouting trips, fuel, horse shoes, tack, gear, guides, forest service fee ( don't know that cost) it adds up quick.
But I nothing bad to say about Tj's operation. He gave me a lot of info for my sheep hunt and he doesn't have to do that.
Also some of these outfitters have a 2 year waiting list

I get it....I am not saying it is not a fair price....just out of my range for what I have going on in my life right now. I also had never seen the taxes for lodging and meal tax on the site for an outfitted hunt. Is that just a Wyoming thing? Seems like Wyoming is becoming California in ways of taking from the "haves".

I believe that charge is for park county. Park county voted in lodge taxes which includes motel/hotel and bed and breakfast. Park county likes to take advantage of the tourist.
My very first horseback elk hunt years ago was in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana about 17 years ago. I went with Rocky Heckman - Montana Safaris and had a great time.
His son Colter runs it now. It's an authentic genuine wilderness horseback elk hunt for sure at a much more affordable cost than NW Wyoming. For sure the harvest expectations are not the same, you may or you may not get a shot opportunity at a bull. But "The Bob" is a special place complete with grizzly bears, wolves and everything else that you would expect.
I hope to go back there myself someday.

Good thread, some nice bulls guys! WY 62 is a great elk tag! Hands down I would pick a WY wilderness unit near Yellowstone September rifle hunt, 10 - 20 mile in horseback hunt if it were me. No question.
