Nelson Ram One Horn Management Hunt

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to get more involved with the great discussions and story sharing that's happening!

I was lucky enough to draw this tag in units 262-266. 12 tags awarded to residents this year for the new hunt, 3 in these units including myself. I am from Reno and unfamiliar with the area around Vegas. I've done some research and dropped map pins at a few historical kill sites as well as where NDOW recommends focusing your attention. Is anybody familiar with the area, or have any tips on what to expect? Lastly, has anybody encountered any rams with a horn broken off on one side? Regulations state the long horn must be at least twice the length of the shorter one.

Any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

I would focus my efforts on 263 then 262 They have the most sheep and best access. If I had the tag I would take a lot of time off to hunt as these Rams are there but not easily turned up you could probably find 170 inch ram easier.

I wouldn’t call them common in any unit. But they can break their horn or lose it to disease. I’ve seen a handful over the years like this one where it barely has a horn at all. The others I’ve seen are more or less a half horn and you better be on the less side because you know NDOW is going to tape it

If you have time for scouting I would run cameras on a few of the guzzlers summer they will be very concentrated especially if drought continues. If rain comes they will spread out. But you will at least know if there is a huntable ram in the area. Don’t forget they have to be down by July 31.

Yes, this will be a low success hunt I think. If I drew the tag, I’d run as many cams as possible in 262 and 263 to see if you can find any legal rams before Aug. And, I’d talk with all the guides and any hunters that drew regular tags to get any intell I could. Then I’d plan on hunting for 2-3 weeks minimum (the whole season would be ideal) with the goal of having a fun sheep hunt.

Thanks for sharing the media, huntandfish.
I won't be able commit 2-3 weeks to the hunt, likely only 5-7 days so I'll have to hunt hard during the time I do have.
Thanks also diablo for the tips on connecting with regular ram hunts and guide services to obtain more intel.

Wish you luck, would really like to see a picture of what you get. That one in the video almost looks like the horn started growing forward then broke off.

Have you been out scouting yet?
Just wondering how the search is going. Wish you luck.
I will not have the chance to scout prior to the hunt, unfortunately, as I live clear across the state. However, I did receive positive feedback from a guide in the area, stating he's seen plenty of one-horned rams in the area. I can't take this as a given filled tag. I'll still have to hunt my heart out and my boots off during the season!

Wishing you luck on your hunt & congrats for drawing that tag. ??
