Elk Permits #9803 @ 0800

Curious to hear the war stories this year. If there's that much demand, why not just throw them into the draw?

I got mine online this morning. Curious, about going to a vendor. Do all parties need to be present to buy them at a vendor? I asked the lady at Walmart yesterday if I could come buy them there, she was not sure about much of anything but said each person would need to be there to buy a tag.

Got in the queue early. Took about 15 minutes to get to log in screen.
Then kicked me out after DOB and cust ID entered.
Been stuck at 446 for a long time.
Who knows this year?

I figure you already got yours JakeH!!

Enjoy,

Robb
I actually hadn't yet, but I waited in the que like everyone else and after an hour of waiting at 9:40am just picked up 4 tags for me my dad and two brothers.

I got covid so I couldn't go to a vendor this year, but would have been working anyway so would have had to get it online anyway.

There was 3800 left at that time.

No you can buy tags for others at the vendor, just need there customers ID and date of birth. Same as doing it online.

I saw that one guide bought 14 tags at his local store today. I dont think that is right, but that is just my 2 bits worth of input.

I went to my local store, bought 2 for my boys. Got there at 7:20, was 5th inline. 3 other came right at 8. The lady stocking shelves and at the counter had no idea how to do them. So we mentioned she may want some help. She said a guy was coming over at 8 to show her. We told her that was 15 minutes too late. But another worker came by, and she had done them for 15 years and said she would do it for her. BLESS HER HEART, she needs a raise. Now days, many would have said GOOD LUCK SUCKERS and move on. This lady was awesome and FAST!!!!

I'm wondering what the time to sell out threshold is for these to be moved to a draw. If they sell out in 3 hours is that enough to warrant a move to a draw? What about an hour? What about 30 minutes? This is like buying Garth Brooks tickets!

Purchased all (9) of ours by 8:20am. Have re logged on several times and got right back in within 5 minutes.

Several buddies when to Smith's , Smith and Edwards and Cabela's - No wait to 4 guys in front of them at the most.

Much smoother this year and plenty of opportunity if a guy has not forgot.

Just logged on again and there is still several thousand permits left.

When I logged in on my phone, I was 1576 in que. Ten minutes later I logged in on my laptop and was 2176 in que. The phone dropped down to 1453 and stayed there and never moved again even though the refresh was still happening every 15 seconds. The laptop is the one that made it through. The phone was just stuck even though it appeared like it wasn't.

Same thing happened to me last year. My phone started at 5348 and the laptop started at 6402. The phone stuck at 5004 and the lap top won.

I heard the line at the South Ogden DWR was a slow mover. Less than 30 people moved through the line by 8:30.

Check the times at the top.

What was the stupid point of increasing the number of licenses from 15,000 to 17,500? More money? I thought they wanted to see how much demand there was? Sold out in 4 hours. What a joke.

Just curious here, did anybody not get one that wanted one? Aside from someone that just forgot that it was today.
If they didn't get one they didn't want one very bad!!!. I logged in over four dozen times to keep a watch on tags left after we purchased all of our tags before 8:20am.

Shouldn't be any complaining other then kicking one in their own back side if they forgot.

Pretty much purchase off internet with ease and no to little wait time, walk into any local Smith's, sporting good store, ect, ect, ect or local DWR office and your mother's, sister's, best friend could purchase anyone wishing to have a tag with just their COR# and date of birth. Just saying. Hope all MM'ers wanting a tag picked theirs up and has a great fall hunt. Best of luck!!!

Anyone that made it a priority could get one today--you had 4 hours to make it happen. The question is what is the tipping point? What happens if you make it a priority, log on first thing in the morning or go stand in line at 8AM and then don't get one because the queue is too long or they sell out to quickly. Is that then the time to go to a draw?

This is an inevitability--just how many years til we get there? Maybe next year...

Sometimes I wonder how many buy a tag now because of the pressure of not getting one or the gee wiz, I got a tag and then never use them. Probably a small pool, but still wonder.

Wish they would sell spike tags first that take several days and up to a week to sell out and then the any bull tags. I believe some buy any bull tags to have when they would be fine with a spike. But this way they have two chances of getting some kind of a tag - Like they say "a bird in the hand is better then one in the bush"

I agree. I logged in at 7:55 am and was 9007th in line. After 1 hour and 19 mins waiting, I got one for me and my brother.

Only if it is a totally random draw. :)

She's wrong

Horrible idea.

Then any chucklehead can take a flyer on a tag.

Dudes wait in line longer at Dutch brothers and Starbucks than getting a tag.

Be curious to see how spikes go this year.

Your theory may be right. I doubt there are as many guys that would chase spikes if they failed on open bull.

They wanted to move to unlimited. The 17,500 was a compromise after the public told them no. They know how much demand there is, why is it a joke?
As I recall, the rationale for making it unlimited was to measure the demand (how many people actually want the tag) without having to draw it. This ”compromise“ did absolutely nothing whatsoever to accomplish that goal. They can’t hold a thought for more than 20 seconds and they can’t stick to the 5-year elk management plan. So yeah, I think it is a joke that just happens to result in more money for UDWR and more overcrowding for hunters. Now they want to raise fees.

Raising the fees is minor still cheap

The new 5 year plan is on the way. Just hold on to your horses.
It has never been about killing too many elk. Only hunter density.

I wasn't able to login until my lunch break at 12:30. Sounds like I missed it by about 20 minutes. I'm a new rifle hunter and I assumed that many tags would last longer than 4 hours. Let the depression sink in...

I was at my technology committee meeting tonight at the DWR office and they said the problem is so many people log in on multiple computers and cell phones for one account but it counts everything for every log in.
They shake their heads......

They should of kept selling and for data reasons for the elk committee to see actually how many hunters we actually have
The first year the dwr capped the number of deer tags to be sold (early 90's) vendors still hand wrote them. The DWR called all the vendors and said okay stop selling. Yeah right?. People held back tags for their buddies and a lot of places didn't get/pay attention to the message to stop. Tags sold were a lot more than they were supposed to be. That was one of many DWR mistakes.

Reality is if you care, you get it done. It was the same(should be the same) for deer tags. Draws created their own problems.

General season should be over the counter. Take the "what the heck, I'll give it a try" guys out of the system.

The last thing we need is it going into a draw.

But if it goes to a draw. Then I vote you can only apply for one GS hunt.

Putting an OTC hunt into a draw is the worst idea I’ve heard for Utah hunters since forever. If it goes to a draw it is no longer a general season OTC hunt and should just be part of the LE elk pool at that point, with waiting periods and all. Have fun with that, draw seekers!

Getting an any bull tag yesterday was simple. Anyone that wanted one could have got one. If you didn’t, it’s your fault, not the system’s.

I agree Vanilla
It would be the worst thing.
There is really no reason at all for it to ever get put in a draw.

What if you log on at 8AM, or go wait inline at the DWR office at that time and they sell out before you can get your tag? That's kind of like a draw right?--just dumb luck getting a tag

I am fine sticking with OTC in so far as everyone who put in a little effort at 8AM got their tag--I'm worried that in the not so distant future those 8AM folks will not get a tag because they will sell out too quickly.

Last year they sold out in 6 hours, this year was 4 hours. The question is what year will they sell out in under an hour--it took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to get a tag online and I logged in at 7:50AM.

Emperor Vanilla and I have went the rounds on this issue over the years, I can just see the future better than he can ;) plus I'm funnier and better looking but that's beside the point

I like your idea there. I would strongly support putting GS deer back to over the counter with no points at all.
Defiantly would get rid of points creep.;)

I get it but there is no reason what so ever that GS any bull needs to go to a draw period.
This can be fixed but people don't like change.

If it ever gets to that point, then yes it may have to get looked at. However, it is not close to that yet. 19 hunters in our hunting group all got their tags with no problems and very little to no waiting within the first 1 1/2 hours. After that a person could log in to web site or walk into a local store and get a tag in less then 5 minutes.

If it came to that I guess it would just force me to hunt Utah one year and then Colorado the next year. Now that would be like making me walk across hot coals bare footed!!! ;)

Funnier? No chance. Better looking? Almost a guarantee!

I’m just glad someone is finally giving me the respect I deserve! Emperor on two different forums now. I won’t make you bow to me, don’t worry!
