Trying to find good maps to carry in the field for unit 45. Anyone know of good ones? Not smart enough to figure out the hunt planner maps. Was hoping there might be one of the 45 and 52 areas.

these units are really why you want an app like on X. your going to be up against private ground everywhere. not going to find that on paper. id try smartening up in the next month with an app
Oh I have gohunt and onX, but I like paper maps on hand to make notes and such. But I’ll try hard smartening up though

If you're in Boise, Idaho Blueprint has the 1.5 minute topos. I believe you can also order from USGS. I used to spend lunch hours in Idaho Blueprint pouring over maps. I have some of my favorite spots framed in my office. But OnX and google earth really do make them obsolete these days

Better make sure whatever paper map you get is Current & Up to date !! There is a lot of land swapping & sales going on !! I got rid of Base Map due to that very issue , they had land owners showing on their maps that had NOT owned those partials for up to 4 years !!!

When I hunted 45 I used maps from MyTopo. They're not cheap but they are made from very high quality materials & are water proof. They cover the entire unit.
As far as camping in the unit...it's pretty much all primitive camping. I'm sure there are a couple but, I'm not aware of any designated camping in the unit. If you have OnX I can send you some pins for some primitive camping in the unit.

Any decent campgrounds in the unit?
If you have OnX it shows you camp grounds. A quick 30 second scan and I found some around magic reservoir. I highly suggest learning how to use OnX. You can way point blood trails, beds, where you need to turn. I've used the ruler to measure water holes or across canyons and have found it to be very accurate.

Kinda funny. Difference from when I was asked is he’s already revealed the unit. It’s one of three species, all being a pretty good tag. Or he’s completely clueless that it’s even a draw unit and is heading out for general season in 45…. That’d be as funny as not knowing how to use OnX
I’m not very familiar with the different hunts in 45. He also mentioned unit 52 so maybe that is a clue to which hunt he has?

Have used onX for yrs little buddy mainly use gohunt now due to better mapping, the tags an archery elk. Do you typically engage in threads to just be a douch or is this one just a rare case and something triggered your feelings? Let me guess you still live with your mother?

Spend more time with your mom actually

There is a state park near Glenns Ferry along the Snake River you can camp at. Three Island State Park
As mentioned Magic Reservoir has places too but that is well within in unit 52.

I had this tag in 2018 before they moved the 50 rifle bull tags to the month of August right before the archery tag which has made it really tough for the archery guys (see harvest statistics below). I went in there last year with my buddy that drew the rifle tag in the 2nd drawing and places that were all tore up with elk sign when I was there were overgrown and sign was minimal. Hunt the private boundaries, both of us shot bulls within 100-200 yards of the private boundary and a couple hundred yards apart. If you are coming from a campground you'll be hunting around corn or you'll need to leave super early to get where you need to be before 1st light. I primitive camped close to where I hunted and still had a dirt bike ride and an hour plus hike to get to where I needed to be before first light.

Good luck, it will be tough, but can be very rewarding.
