What’s your thoughts on Mountain House? Many people like them and there are others who like other brands. I’d really like to see your recommendations on Mountain House or other brands you’ve used. I am about to try a few but there are a lot of different choices.

I am getting ready to buy 10 days of meals for me and my 2 sons. I could certainly use some direction. Thanks!

Cant go wrong with Mt house or Peak refuel.

Some of my favorite mt house meals:

Pasta primavera
Lasagna
Chicken with rice
Chili mac
Granola with blueberries is killer for breakfast

Peak refuel:
Chicken dishes are good
Buffalo mashed potatoes is legit

A tip that shouldn’t have to be said but does is FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Make sure your cooking pot has the correct marks for cups. Add in exactly the amount of water the instructions say and let it sit at least however long it says.

I took a mm member on a 15 day hunt and he had no experience with mt house and didn’t follow the instructions. I noticed he didn’t finish his meals the first 5 days. He was wearing down fast from not eating enough calories each day. He finally said he couldn’t stomach them. Well he wasn’t putting enough water in the meals or letting them rehydrate long enough. Once he started doing that he was good to go. Changed the hunt for him.

Can't go wrong with Mountain House. I like all of them. They've been in the freeze dried food game for a very long time.

Backpacker's Pantry is another option if you want to try more 'exotic' flavors. They have flavors like curry, masala, pad thai, cuban coconut black beans and rice, etc.

And for yet another option, if you're a Costco member, a 32-pack of OMEAL freeze fried pouches is on sale now. I have no experience with OMEAL but Costco typically sells quality items and they're discounted now so I figure I'd pass along the info. They're highly rated on Amazon

I've eaten a ton of Mtn House while hunting sheep over the years.
I like them but after a week, they all taste the same and I look upon them as fuel only but totally necessary.

For my taste, I like a little EXTRA boiling water in them, and let them sit the WHOLE time as per directions, but again, that's maybe just me.

Some of the Mtn House meals wreak some serious havoc on my intestines  , but I don't mind some of them. Peak Refuel meals taste MUCH better to me and are a step above in my opinion.

My favorite mountain house is a tie between beef stroganoff and turkey tetrazzini. For some reason It can be hard to find the turkey tetrazzini and you don’t hear about it much, but it is really good.

Wow, did not expect this many great replies. I appreciate it.

I’m getting my food put together early as I want to make sure my pack is put together well. I’ll definitely get the Mountain House and the Peak.

Thanks again!

Another great food that people really over look is just bags of Jerky. Jerky has some goodies in it for energy and such while out in the mountains.

Turkey tetrazzini is awesome but I think they stopped making it?

Next Mile Meals and Peak Refuel are our go-to’s.

I take half a next mile meal and half a bag of Idahoan instant potatoes and mix them together. Cuts the per meal cost and keeps the calories up.

Peak Refuel biscuits and gravy is pretty darn good. Break up the biscuits before adding the water though.

I too like to use extra water. About an 1/8c of extra water for cooking/rehydrating.

+1 hands down the two best dehydrated food companies that are easy to get, sometimes Costco has a deal on mt house packs

I always like letting them sit longer than is recommended. Some of them take awhile to reconstitute. Also, we got a freeze dryer so we make our own now.

When I’m not in a rush, I like to add about 2/3 of the water, let it sit the recommended time, then add the remaining 1/3 of boiling water and give it an extra 5 minutes. I also have yet to eat a meal from either MH or Peak that I would consider inedible, although some are not my favorites.

Some of my favorite Mountain House are:
-lasagna
-chili mac
-Italian pepper steak
-biscuits and gravy
-breakfast skillet
-southwest breakfast hash

Some of my favorite Peak Refuel are:
-chicken alfredo
-chicken pesto
-beef stroganoff
-coconut curry
-strawberry granola

15 day ???

Something else. My wife had these insulated bags for microwaving potatoes like the ones pictured. She did not like them so I use them to keep the Mtn. Houses warm. Perfect size. Hard to find, but the baby red instant potatoes are good also.

5x6… I’m going for the first 5inches of brow tine this year ;) colorado combat elk hunting at its finest

I like mntn house but keep it to every other day. Rotate with good old tuna or canned chicken and top Ramen or some other heady/ organic rice Ramen. Mtn house: Beef lasagna, breakfast skillet, biscuits and gravy are faves. Low sugar oatmeal with granola and dried fruit for breakfast most days. I love clif bars and granola and nuts for snacks. Don't think beef Jerky does my belly well in the backcountry. Hard to not eat too much and end up wishing I hadnt!

Bring a through away fork for the lasagna!! Taste good but the cheese is nuclear and almost needs to be chiseled off.
That's the worst part about the lasagna! However, IMO it's the best tasting of their entrees. One thing I do is also let them sit for a few minutes longer to ensure they're fully cooked.

Also, if you're eating them out of the bag, get one of these.

Tried the mountain house Chile Mac, it was great. Tried some cheddar potato Readywise soup as well. It was/is a little on the heavy side (2.5 servings per bag). It tasted great but like others recommended, I should have cooked it longer than I did.
I think I now have most, if not all the food me and me two sons need. Time to quit messing around with it and spend these last few weeks concentrating on training and shooting!
Thanks again for all the suggestion. Headed out on for a long weekend hike and will get to test more food and gear….

Lots of options !! If your taking a heat source look into mashed taters - noodles - rice ETC.. Spice them up with some chicken or tuna packets add to rice or noodles when almost done . Slice up salami pepperoni ham bacon bits put in your taters rice noodles ETC Lots of options & all weigh about the same only way less Crap in them !!

Anyone remember the mountain house sea food chowder? Haven’t been able to find it in years. That stuff somehow tasted like home cooked chowder. Loved it. Probably because sea food de and re hydrates so well.

Hell yeah I do. That was amazing. Better than most chowder I’ve had.

Every so often mountain house brings back a classic but it is only available online. I always watch/hope seafood chowder in on there. I would do some things I’m not proud of to get some chowder again!

I don't think that it is good time today to take a mortgage, especially for big ones. Due to the political situation in the world, the most effective way you can use your money is to invest them in stocks or crypto. Try to look in your area for a decent stock trading company and consult them about the most profitable options. In my opinion, you definitely should buy some oil and gas stocks. It seems like this winter will be really cold, especially in Europe, and stock prices will rise accordingly. I bought more oil stocks from the suggestion of the Equity Release Hull service.
I think you are talking about the wrong kind of mountain house? What in the wide world of bots is going on here?

Have you seen what had happened to the stock market this last year??
Housing and land May flutter, but it always goes up in the end.
Besides, this tread is about freeze dried backpacking food!!! ??

I'm glad I bought my Mountain House meals when I did. To think that I was complaining about paying $10 for a meal, that price is obviously going up in the future.

This is an old thread but I just reread it and the Clam Chowder comments from SS! and others and came up with a possible solution. I’ve made this stuff I home and it’s not the very best I’ve ever eaten but it’s actually not half bad. The different is you need to dump a can of clams in with ingredients. The mix doesn’t come with clams. Also, it requires 7.5 cups of water and you cook it in a pot and not in a self contained heating bag. So….. a slight bet heavier to carry a small can of clams but a lot more soup when your done.

Add one these and water. Boil as per package.

You can thank me after you’ve kept from starving in the back forty
