Don't even have a spotter, nor high powered binos, or scope. I do believe it would be acceptable to maybe do away with range finder's in rifle seasons, but in archery hunting, i feel they really have a great benefit for not only the hunter, but also the animal being hunted.

You make a slightly low shot with a rifle and the inside explosions and extra damage the bullet causes helps with making up for that low shot....you don't get that with a broad head (as much as a bullet). I think range finders do help decrease the amount of wounded animals to an extent.

Of course there will be hunters who just mess up their shots, but range finders I do believe help eliminate just one of the many obstacles thay could help cause a bad shot.
 
Never ceases to amaze me how many hunters are out to screw the others.
I certainly don't have any insider information like some of you seem to have. But holy hell some have some really strange fixes for something they can't even define.

I never needed a range finder for a muzzleloader or rifle.
I always close the distance never needed to pack one.
You can take scopes off of my rifles I’ll just hunt open sights.
My muzzleloaders one has 1x scope on it and the other is open sights.

So take my glass away I’ll do just fine.

Archery is the only weapon I use a rangefinder for.
But hey if the 8 deer I have harvested and the 1 elk I harvested over the years with a compound bow is a problem, Then take my rangefinder away and I’ll learn how to shoot a recurve.
Problem solved on my end.

I can hunt without all them fancy gadgets.

So take them away it won’t bother me not one bit.

It’s funny how much better the quality was back in the day.
Now look at us now with all the gadgets.
 
When the wildlife board approved the any power scopes a few years back. It was the head guy that was leading that, I don't believe the RAC guys were in favor of that. That approval made a bunch of custom muzzleloader companies, a lot of money. I was hanging Christmas lights and damn near fell off my roof when Bair said, "well why not!!!!!"

Yeah I couldn’t believe what I heard either.
That’s why I never switched I know how much easier it would be to harvest with a scope.
People will argue with me on that but it’s the truth.
 
I shoot instinctive to this day. I didn't put a scope on.y muzzy. I have a 3x9 on my rifles. I do have good binos, and a spotter. I have not hunted deer for myself since 2016... I don't consider myself selfish.

Hey I agree it needs to be across the board.
My whole reason for making the restrictions is we can all hunt without the gadgets but there is a lot that can’t or won’t even try.
But it can be done we both know it.

So I think putting some of our tools away isn’t such a bad thing.

I'm gonna take my $300 bow out into the hills in a few days. I'll be laughed at by other bowhunters, if they run into me. Back in 2003, this is the best I could afford. The last time I hunted with it, I hauled meat off the mountain. I don't want to haul any meat this weekend, only because I bought the multi tag. I'd rather continue to hunt than be successful. On a side note, I'd rather eat a deer than an elk. I am still 2 years out on a deer tag though.
 
Just Eliminate any range finder over 1000 yds and limit the size of scope for rifle hunting. Problem solved most guys won’t shoot it if they can’t range it or zoom in enough. Then go 3 pt or better on some units. Let’s see where it goes from there.

Cut the tags or close the roads.

They tried antler point restrictions here for a few years. My only recollection was things stayed about the same. But there were more deer back then to start with, so I would take those years again. Some people might say the point restrictions were the beginning of the end.
 
Maybe ban vehicles why they are at it during the migration from summer to winter and staging areas. That would be more realistic to saving the herds. And stop cleaning up the roadkill so folks can see the carnage they cause by the flesh speed bumps, and maybe slow down and pay attention. I say we go back to stones and sticks. Round ball no rifling in barrels. But they will soon charge a draw for every species we have to collect their 10$ and make it so residents can apply for all like non residents. That’s padding the $$ in revenue. ….. fun topic.

I know it’s likely they’ll be taking variable powered scopes to some extent off muzzleloaders, and I know you don’t like that. I think it’s kind of dumb myself. But no need to go and BAWL about it and start wild rumors to enrage the masses along with ya.

You say everyone gives some. It won’t happen. Wrap your brain around it, or not. I’m just telling you what’s gonna happen, not what I think should happen.

Well they Banned our night vision scopes or spotters. Whatever you want to call them. So I guess this isn't that far off ! Next we will getting fined for tossing out a water bottle that is half full ! You know Lake Powell is pretty low and every drop counts !!!!!

They have done something. looked at what the DWR has done over the past 5 years.
All the tags they have cut. Since Early 90's they cut well over 100,000 tags.
All the collaring studies.
All the habitat work by them and other groups.
All the predator control.
All the road crossings.
Baiting and trail cameras.
Remember this is still new and this will take time.

There is one thing they haven't done and it's technology on weapons.
I'm all in on whatever they do because it needs to happen.

I think think they need to look into restriction on road hunting like what Colorado has.

There is a lot of deer that is shot from roads.


Colorado rules.

Carrying loaded firearms (except handguns) on an OHV during deer, elk, pronghorn and bear seasons. Firearms (except handguns) must be unloaded in the chamber and magazine. Firearms (except handguns) and bows must be fully enclosed in a hard or soft case. Scabbards or cases with open ends or sides are prohibited.
People firing a bow, rifle, handgun or shotgun with a single slug must be at least 50 feet from the centerline of the road.

Is someone really going to complain that they banned night vision and thermal imaging? I'm pretty relaxed in how I think people should be able to use technology, but even I think the use of those is completely ridiculous and unethical. If you need thermal imaging in hunting, find a new hobby.

my godfrey, where is the building with the server that is big enough to contain all the new regulations online so the Fish cops can look them up? sure as hell they cant keep track of the rules in a book...they dont have trucks big enough to haul the new rule books

How about this next year you buy a 3 season Elk tag and you bring all your gadgets.

I will go buy a 3 season Elk tag. I will leave spotting scope/binos/range finder all at home.
I'll even hunt in my Levi jeans and a flannel shirt with cowboy boots. If you want I will leave my camper at home and I'll bring my 1999 gmc truck up and just sleep in the bed under the stars. No 4 wheelers no side x side.

I will hunt Archery with a recurve. Just so you know I have never hunted with a recurve. But I know I can do it.

I will hunt rifle with open sights I think I'll bring my 30 30 bolt action.

I will hunt Muzzloader with my 1x scope or I will buy sights for my Muzzloader.
If you want me to hunt with Flint lock. I will build one and do that as well.

I will show you it can be done. while where at it I will show you that my 17 year old son can do it as well.

So put your money where your mouth is and take me up on the challenge.
I only have a archery tag this year and I owe it to the animal. I will not Switch 3 days before the hunt starts.

Me too...especially if we can make it retroactive, to say about 30 years ago. Moved here in the last 30 years? No resident tags for you.
I am sure this will go over terribly, but I would still be all for it. People, far too many people, are what has happened to our deer herds. No technology changes or regulations will fix that, and if you don't fix that, no issues will ever go away regardless of any technology changes.

Minding your own business means to quit making others do what you do. If you want to hunt a certain way, good for you. Doesn't mean everyone else should have to as well.

Never said it couldn't be done without all the gadgets. You meddling in other people's affairs is saying they should or shouldn't be allowed to hunt with gadgets if they so choose because you think so, and because you're good with it, they should be too. No matter what.

Fine line between confidence and arrogance...
