Teller County (suspected) moose poacher????

Makes you wonder- if you report it as an accidental kill and its verified as such, then you still can get fined +10k with hunting suspension. If you walk away from it, you may or may not get caught and fined +20k with hunting suspension. I wonder why he chose to do what he did? What does everyone else think?

I would think in today's age that once the photos of the suspect hit the various hunting forums that it won't be long before CPW get some leads as to who he is. Hard to beleive they haven't already figured that out after 11 months.

That's no joke. Anymore you still get punished for doing the right thing ...soooo why report it??? If he did it, I honestly don't blame him if it was an accident and he didn't report it.

Are you sure about the $10K fine and license suspension? I was hunting with an outfitter and a guy shot a 3x3 that didn't have a 5" brow tine. CO called, he wrote a $78 ticket and took the elk. Said he was glad it was reported, not wasted and didn't turn into a felony.

I think the accident thing went out the window when the dude was trying to take the head off like the article says

I get that, but the points still there for other hunters too who make mistakes.
I’m not sure how they would treat something like a moose, I have heard of guys self reporting killing the wrong sex elk and it turned out alright, I think there was a couple hundred dollar fine and the guy couldn’t keep antlers but they let him have the meat

.....yeah....just made my point......so the hunter made a pretty minor mistake, and did "the right thing" and was still fined "a couple hundred dollars".

I get you should be able to distinguish everything out in the field, but all hunters make mistakes....and get punished for telling the truth when a mistake is made? That doesn't make me want to "do the right thing" if I make a mistake.

I mean he shot a big 6 point off of Kenosha pass, when a bull stepped in front of the cow he was about to shoot. A couple hundred dollar fine is a far cry from 10k, it should sting when you screw up. But also the alternative if you get caught is not only big money fines, but loss of weapons, trucks, privileges potentially…. a couple hundred bucks and a clean conscious sounds way better.

I get it, everyone makes mistakes but there is a difference between a little mistake and totally screwing the pooch, from my experience the best way to deal with it is be honest and own it
