FCFS changes

I am only interesting in converting a resident sheep tag into my NR name.......with way more than 2 weeks before any sheep season, is it even possible for one to show up now??
Not possible. Anything more than two weeks out from the season opener will go to an alternate not FCFS.

It's more likely to have Trump re-elected.

I think there were 2 last year?
I doubt there will even be one this year.
But if there is, you better have a faster finger than me!?

I guess if no one marked it as an Alternate

My crew might bail on me due to injuries . Pretty tough for an old guy with one arm bacically to do an elk hunt. Trying to get the logistics figured out or else a pretty damn good bull elk tag will be returned

Hope it works out so you get to hunt. What unit do you have? I have an elk tag this year and would be willing to help out if you are in the same country. -----SS

I have unit 121 early rifle. I appreciate the offer. I’m hustling hard right now and hope it will work out. 19 yrs to get this tag

I've got 16 points so not sure I'd grab an elk tag with short notice. I hope you are able to make it work and hunt. Good luck.

Dang, I also have an early tag in another part of the state. Ideally, your hustle will pay off and you will still get to hunt. If not, its still early enough that your tag would likely go to an alternate who has been waiting for years to have the opportunity. With Nevada's generous return policy, sometimes its better to save the points and fight again another year.-----SS

Rumors I am hearing is that fcfs tags will remain in residency starting next year. I.e residents will only be able to buy tags returned by residents; non residents will only be able to by tags returned by non residents. Probably how it should be if I am being honest. Should still be plenty of tags to go around for you non residents. Just passing along the rumblings I have heard

Take it with a grain of salt. Heard this from a friend of a friend type of thing
The only thing to take with a grain of salt is when this will officially become policy. There is no way that residents will stand to continue giving away coveted tags to the NR pool year after year and I know that there are thousands who are actively voicing their opinions very loudly on the matter. Can't happen soon enough.-----SS

Resident or Non Resident
You draw it’s your tag.No more turning tags back.
I hope they stop the games.
Umm, how 'bout no. You spent the money, you should be able to at least get your points back. Quality tags are hard enough to come by, and you want to make it even more restrictive. Get bent.
There's no "games". People have lives to live. They turn a tag in and someone else is stoked while generating twice the revenue. You're a moron if you think that's a bad idea. Now go outside and yell at kids to get off your lawn.

I'm totally ok with Nevada continuing to allow tags to be turned in but it wouldn't hurt to have a deadline that allows tags to be distributed to alternates more often. I'd say, in most cases, you should be able to turn the tag in at least 14 business days prior to the hunt. After that, have a penalty of 50% point loss for turning in the tag late. If there are medical or other justifiable circumstances, then allow tags to be turned in up to opening day with no point loss and use FCFS to redistribute the tag.

I turned in a ewe bighorn tag this year because I drew 5 other tags in 3 states and had plenty of other hunting to do. Sure, I could have squeezed the ewe hunt in but I chose to turn it in the same day I got the results and let someone else enjoy it. Hopefully I'll draw it again someday on a normal year when I'm lucky to have one tag in my pocket. ------SS

I can definitely see a penalty for turning in a tag late. I even think losing your point for that season could be fair to keep the rich dudes with tons of points from cherry picking their hunts.

Throw all the insults you want.
We just won’t agree. Over the past few years
NDWR has systematically close the loop holes
That RESIDENTS have been exploiting for years.
Very few people have medical issues or “family issues” for how many tags we’re getting turned back. That’s why they came up with the new system. It all comes down to what guys see scouting or rain quantities and you know it.This is one of the last lingering issues with playing games now that they have cleaned up the FCFS system.
They have talked about it and it’s getting looked at.We will see if they adjust the system.
If your gonna blame someone blame your Resident buddy’s.

The FCFS is a win-win-win. The newer way they distribute the resale of tags has improved to make it more fair for anyone to play.

1) the tag is already paid for so NDOW can operate on a budget. If said tag holder didn't want the tag for any reason, he/she turns it back in and will get his points back.
2) Some other lucky hunter gets a chance to grab a tag if he/she was in the dumpster after application season. They pay for the tag...again, and points are taken.
3) NDOW now get's additional monies for the resale and more money is generated for wildlife. (it would be cool if the extra money went into something specific like habitat restoration, more tanks/wells, etc)

It shouldn't bother anyone who didn't return the tag and or purchase a FCFS tag that the system is in place. It has no effect on them, the resource or quality of their hunt. Anyone butt hurt over the FCFS system is simply being a Karen. Just go hunt and get on with your life. ;)

I agree with most of your post. The only remaining issue that I have with the program is that tags distributed through FCFS do not maintain the current resident/nonresident allotment. This does a couple things: First, it takes opportunity from resident hunters as NR hunters pick up FCFS tags that were originally awarded in the resident draw pool. This also hurts the future resident draw odds as the resident that was awarded the tag in the draw gets all their points back for next year's draw. The NR that snags the tag loses their points lessening point creep in future NR draws.

Call me a Karen or whatever but myself and a large contingent of Nevada residents will not stop fighting until this is changed. I'm hoping by next year. ---SS

Back from Nevada and I had a great Hunt. Antelope numbers where low and from a local I talked to the overall unit is down some. Once again I did not get any field photos I shot it @4 o’clock and it was blazing hot my main concern was to get it taken care of. I would love to get this tag again but I’ll be 59 after the waiting period so not likely.
If anyone ever gets this tag hit me up I got some great info on the unit I’d be willing to share.

Was this the 015 or 40's returned tag? Congrats on the goat. I passed both of those goat tags so I am glad to see it was put to good use. :)

I am curious what the thinking was when originally setting up FCFS.....did they think they wouldn't sell if left available only to original residency?....did they think residents wouldn't notice or care??

Maybe maximizing revenue $$$ by getting NR fees instead of Resident fees????

Looks like things got figured out and I will have help. Didn’t want to waste a 121 bull tag. Nots easy getting old. Thanks for all the replys

When I was at a Washoe CAB meeting I brought up the FCFS residency issue.. The chairman acted like he was surprised and wasn’t aware of it. He did take notes to bring before the commission though.
Sorry Homer I’m pretty sure I know your opinion on this.
We’ll see what happens!

I’ve heard this thrown out a lot and can’t figure out why folks think it’s about money. 100 grand (what they supposedly made off of non residents last year in fcfs) is a drop in the bucket for ndows budget. It allows them to hire an extra employee and that’s about it. I suppose they could be really Hurting and desperate for some cash.

I guess they didn’t think people would be so up in arms about it, although it think it’s probably wrong.

I've seen two Elk archery tags pop this year, not on much. Mostly been Muley archery thus far with a few speedgoats thrown in.

SS you have a good point with regard to res tags getting in the hands of NR hunters. I overlooked this point and I would be frustrated as a resident in this case too. I can understand why the NDOW has opened up res tags to NR hunters from a $$ standpoint as they are getting 10 times the tag fee or more pending species. the justification of $$ doesn't always make it right though. I'd be curious what the additional revenue is on the FCFS tag sales and what they are doing with that money. If it's enough to improve habitat, gain land access and open up more opportunities, maybe the current system is worth it. maybe?

Anyone know what just popped up? I had been outside for about an hour and just as I refreshed it, there was a picture of an animal...didn't see what it was.

Great point and I'm sure the DNR is finding some way to put the extra cash to work. It is truly a bonus as just a few years ago, they got the original cost of the tag and now they get that plus whatever they collect for the FCFS sale.
I will be the first to go on record saying that I'm glad that someone is getting to use these tags, that's a good start. Ideally, they will continue to adjust the program until its done right. I think they made huge strides this year and I look forward to the future changes that will keep more of the limited resident tag pool with resident hunters. Until then, lets all enjoy the system and get some of those tags!----SS

Did manage to pick up a 221-223 muzzy deer tag. Now just have to figure out where in the units to concentrate on.

Frickin Homer.....you dirty dog! Way to stay diligent and score on a OIL tag. Should've been me.....

Is there a list of tags that have come up in the past? Would like to see what type of tags come up and when.
Thanks

Not that I know of but I wish there was. It would nice if NDOW posted a daily or weekly recap.
I agree....to add insult to injury to know exactly what tags we missed out on? LOL. I would prefer not to know.

I tried grabbing that sheep tag but Homer beat me to the punch. When I clicked on it it said that the tag was no longer available. After that, my computer screen was too cracked to read.

I’ve noticed the last couple tags that I’ve seen come up have hung around for awhile?

And they don’t seem to clear from my screen until I’m booted from inactivity, or I log off and log back on. Has anyone else noticed this, or are they really sticking around that long? I’m talking like 15-30 minutes…
It must have something to do with the shorter notice and quality of the tag, but I would think a resident would be grabbing those pretty quick?
Again, unless my screen isn’t updating for some reason?

They do stick around for several minutes depending on the tag. I have noticed that they stay on the screen but if you click on add to cart, it'll be gone but still on the screen. I had that ML tag 12 years ago....wouldn't send my worst enemy on that hunt. LOL.

Ok thanks.
But if I clicked add to cart, and goes in there, I’m screwed for seven days, right? Or is there another step you have to take for it to count against you? Just never dared risk it…
Plus I haven’t seen one yet that I’d add to cart anyway.

I think you are screwed for 7 days and that is why I never clicked on any other tag that popped up except that ram tag. I just think they do that to make sure a guys isn't wrapping up every tag that pops up and then declines the purchase.

Yes 7 day wait if added to cart. Once in cart you have 5 minutes to make the purchase. From my experience when a tag pops it will stay on your screen until you time out or refresh, FCFS does not remove it even if it gets picked up. I saw a junior tag pop and instantly refreshed the page, it was still there when I got back in. Tried the same on an antelope any legal weapon and it was gone!
So basically if the tag is still up after a manual refresh it is still available.

I started my own tracker at the end of July and through Aug 22 have seen 29 tags pop up...not always on though!

I wish I had refreshed once I knew the ram tag was not available. I am learning about this system and hope they keep it for many years to come. I am hoping another ram tag pops up. LMAO

I just gave back a sheep tag. Hopefully one of you halfwitts ends up with it.. But, FYI, there’s one gonna hit in the next 24 hours or so.
Sorry to hear that you had to give this up. This halfwitt with 1 point in sheep will pass...A lifetime tag deserves more time. I truly hope you get this opportunity again...Chump

Haven't seen it yet.....sorry you can't use the tag. I'm 51 so 1 point or 25 points, I'll grab any sheep tag I can get. It'll probably be the only opportunity I will have in my lifetime.

I get it, 51 myself...just a stubborn SOB. Watch tomorrow!

To show up on FCFS now, it must be one of the sheep hunts that open on September 15, like the 161 tag above. There aren't many of those tags, like 12? Surely there are alternate opt in applications on every other Nelson Ram tag? The tag is sent to alternate opt in first choice applications next in line until 15 days before the hunt.

Lol. All is definitely good but had to choose between hunts and that one lost. I’ll still be hunting, just not in Nevada. 268
Mind if I ask what other hunts won over a sheep hunt. Odds of drawing unit 268 with max points (think around 30) is 0.2%. Still may never draw again in your lifetime.

Also, season runs from around Nov. 20th to the first of January. So you would think the tag would go to an alternate.

Sure! Moose/mountain goat/deer easily won over a sheep hunt. Hands down… Plus guide a couple in between. I’m sure I will draw the tag again at max points. Probably next year. Unfortunately, it’s likely I’ll have the same problem then as well. I’d rather eat moose than a stinky old sheep so maybe I should stop applying. Had a sheep tag last year too and still have the unpunched tag. Wasn’t that much fun. A bit of a let down at best.

Sheep country seems a bit barren....

Wait, was this a Ram or a Ewe sheep tag? I think everyone here is thinking Ram. If you had a sheep tag last year in Nevada, you would not have been able to get one this year. Unless last year or this year were a Ewe tag

odds.

What about different sub species? Theoretically you could draw 3 ram tags in one year in Nevada. Not to mention, one horn, silver state and a plethora of other options. Nevada is by far the most opportunity anyone has at sheep hunting.,.

Good points.. regardless of how many you applied for you have some serious luck with a ram tag two years in a row. Feel free to send a bit of that my way ?

Unit 268 had to be Ram, one horn or ewe. Either way the season dates are over 2 weeks away, that tag went to an alternate which is awesome!

What I am curious about is said tag could have been NR which has 268 for ram/ewe. Given the timeframe did it go to a NR alternate? Regardless I am happy that someone got this!!!

True. As far as I know residency currently plays no part in fcfs. So my guess is that it went to the first alternate regardless of residency.

Seen one today that was really tempting, not even available to nonresident this year…
And not to say I would have got it for sure, but I was staring at the screen when this one popped up!

I try to research a lot of these units before hand, but this one wasn’t on my radar, especially due to the fact there wasn’t one available to nonresident’s in the draw.
I guess I’m wondering if this would have been worth burning my 18 points???
