A deer hunting story

A friend called me this morning who I worked in the woods with back in the late 60's. He brought up an event that I had forgotten about.

One evening (it was dark), he called me on the phone. It was deer season and he said he needed some help. I asked him what kind of help? He said just come over, so I did. When I got there, he explained that he shot a buck about dark, and he quickly threw the buck in the trunk of his car and drove home. He would deal with it when he had some lighting at home. On the drive home the buck came back to life. We went out to his car and sure enough we could hear the buck's antlers rattling against the trunk lid. He wanted to know what to do.

We discussed it for a while and came up with a plan. He got his .22 pistol (a Colt Woodsman) and a flashlight. He gave them to me. He was going to lift the lid slightly and then I would shine the light in there and shoot him between the eyes. He reminded me there is a gas tank I needed to miss.

He lifted the lid a few inches, I shined the light in and spotted an ear. I stuck the pistol next to it and pulled the trigger and he slammed the lid shut and all was quiet for the next 10 minutes or so. Mission accomplished. He had to clean up the trunk.

We had a local guy to southern CO. His name was Crockett and he was known to take a deer or two that may have been a bit after shooting hours. Anyway, according to others, he had shota deer between the eyes, put in in the back of his truck and covered it up with somevtater sacks. Crockett was on his way home, but, decided to drive to town and hit up Gomez' Liquor Store. The town had a singular flashing light, mounted on a pedestal, in the middle of the intersection.

As he turned the corner, near the flashing light, he clipped the pedestal and the deer, just KO'd, woke up and jumped out. The deer took off for the outskirts of town and was never seen again.

Crockett got a ticket fir hitting the pedestal.

I also shot a coyote one time and was packing it out to skin later. I sat it down in the old skid road so I could look over the bank for deer. When I went back to get the coyote it was gone.

I saw a coyote one time with a stick in his mouth headed down towards a pond....I watched him get to the pond, then back down into the water till just his nose and stick were above water. I watched for twenty minutes and he never moved, then all at once he left the stick floating, shook off and trotted up the hill. I went down and looked at that stick and it was covered in fleas and ticks.......

I've had deer come in and eat burnt wood out of our campfire at night when we're sleeping right next to it. The crunching noise woke me up.

Yeah but it wouldn't have been as messy as we probably could have kept it all in his shell!

Hope you are doing well buddy! It's been a while!
Yes, it has been a while. I guess you grew up and I stayed stuck right here. I hope you and sis are doing well too.

What about eating dirt where you pizzed? I've seen thar quite a few times.

One time we looked up from a landing where a kid in our camp had gone to take a dump and there was a doe eating his TP... I almost shot them both...after almost puking. We had told him to bury it. He was lazy, didn't huntvwith us after that.

I have two friends one is now dead and the other is reformed from his poaching youth, haha. They were in a 2 door s10 blazer when a deer they head shot with a .22 came back to life in the cargo area... it was a whole thing..

It was so long ago I forgot if he poached the buck or not. Probably though.

For some reason the deer in the Marble Mountains lack something in their diet because they always eat the ground where we take a leak. I've seen them even pull sweaty socks off the makeshift clothesline. After the salt maybe?

Same area that I've seen it. There are also a lot of places in that area where they've eaten holes into the dirt. Sometimes on cut banks of roads.

I was never sure if it was a deficiency or just taking advantage of a resource.

Not the same- but I heard of this one in Pioche. Long ago, things were quite different as far as poaching, or illegal activities- such as "camp meat", "feeding the family", jacklighting, tag validation, etc. There was a gentleman known among the locals to have on occasions taken a deer, despite hunting seasons. I guess one time he stopped by one of the local bars with his load of firewood, when someone came in and told him he better get his wood home before it "bled to death".

Good one Eel!

One time while spot lighting jacks, we cornered a couple doe deer against a high fence and my cousin and I conjured up the bright idea to tackle them, while our buddy held the light.
As we closed in, the deer got agitated and when we were about to the point where we could tackle them, the deer reared up and flailed us with the front hooves. My cousin got it way worse than I did.
It ended quickly!
They won!

Lesson learned ...the hard way,
Zeke
