I've been interested in elk hunting Oregon's Walla Walla unit. I currently have 17 preference points and I'm thinking about applying for either archery or rifle. Just trying to decide what route to take. I've been in the unit for a deer hunt so I know the terrain can be VERY steep. Has anyone recently hunted that unit and if so, what was your experience? Any reply is appreciated.

Are you on ifish at all? If not, there would be a good chance of finding recent reports over there.

Rifle is fun, lots of bulls but the top end quality is lacking. They're easy to pattern until the hordes of spike hunters show. As you know, it's pretty darned steep. I'll be in there again this year, good luck. You should have 50% odds as a resident with 17.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've heard the rifle hunt can be fun. It's unfortunate the quality of bulls is lacking considering when I draw the tag it will most likely be my once in a lifetime "premium" elk hunt. Goodluck to you this year.

I hunted the Washington side and let me tell you, bad luck! Had the worst weather in watershed history...2 ft snow and only able to hunt 25% of the shed. Table rock, milk shakes, Deadman and green peak were a no go all season cause of a 17 ft snow drift. Only 2 rag bulls taken on Washington. Oregon had 9 because they were able to hunt 90% of the shed. Seen 350+ bulls everyday but couldn't get to them...ugh. report of massive heard hidden in a 40 acre piece that fish and game tried to separate the heard with helicopter Thursday before opening day! I cracked the code a day late.
