I drew the Mt. Emily buck rut hunt, 154C. I have been unable to do any scouting due to various family issues. I paid a guide to do some pre-scouting for me but that did not work out. I have already missed almost half the hunt. I will be going up on Sunday to see what is out there. I will only have a couple of days to hunt. I have received some help from a couple of people here. If anyone else has some suggestions where to look, I would appreciate any assistance.
Thanks in advance.

Pm sent with my phone. I was up there looking for a bull for the past few weeks. That’s a really hard unit to find a good buck

Do you know the unit at all?? I wish you luck since you likely burned 20 preference points to draw that tag unless you got lucky in the random. Its a tough hunt if you don't have much experience in the unit. The rut should be going pretty strong about now and there is some snow up top. I suppose your best bet is to cover as much ground as possible to find a buck looking for does.

Cover a lot of country and glass a lot that's about all there is to it. hunters off the rez pound this unit hard , I think the only reason ODFW still has this hunt is they figure it doesn't do much damage since the bucks are already shot out.

But most years at least one good buck is taken so there's always a chance.

Thanks. I circled the unit today. Snow is too deep on the north side to risk getting stuck. I traveled the Summit road from the south. Snow only was a problem once I got very high. Only saw 10 does. It is not very promising.

Stay with it.

Just seeing this thread. That is a very tough hunt for the points it takes (ain't they all). The deer in that country have taken an absolute beating. Hard to come by, but there are still some decent bucks running around. Hope you found one, and at a minimum enjoyed the time and at least saw some good bulls. A lot more of them than there are deer!

I was planning on starting a new thread with a recap of the hunt. But I will just post it here. The hunt was a bust. The hunt is clearly not worth the points it takes to draw. I spent 6 days hitting it hard and going over the south part of the unit. I could not reach the north part of the unit because of the snow and I was alone.

I saw several bucks. But nothing worth shooting. Most were fairly young. The largest buck I saw was in a person's backyard near Sommerville. It still was not large enough to shoot (even if I had seen it on public land). I saw a lot of deer hanging close to homes. In one case I saw four does were laying down within 6 feet of a home. I am guessing it was because the predators do not like being so close to people and the deer feel safer.

I do want to thank the people from MM who gave me some advice regarding where to look. I am not sure where the big bucks were hiding. One interesting thing is that I did not see a single elk on the entire hunt. That leads me to think they were all deep in the canyons far away from the roads. It is possible the deer did the same.

The other factor is that I could not hunt opening weekend because of family issues. A lot of snow came in after that weekend, which limited my access.

If someone else draws the tag next year, I would be happy to share my experience in more detail.

I have a friend who killed an absolute pisser in Mt. Emily this year. For years (he watched this one for three) he's been running over 20 cameras in the unit, the deer he killed is the only one he has on camera this year that he thought would break the 150" mark... It did it by a long damn ways, but he said it was a unicorn!! Sorry to hear the hunt was a bust, hopefully you enjoyed some beautiful area at least. If it's any consolation, Im not sure there is any place a whole lot better to spend them unfortunately.

Nice buck, thanks for the pic.....

All right, all right, I get it. lol

Fellas it aint my deer and I wasn't on the hunt. I assure you he exists, and I'll bet a dollar to your dime he's way over 180"....

But I get it. lol

I'll reach out to see if he cares if I post the picture on here. In the mean time if there's anyone who wants to pony up, I'm your hucklebearer!!

all right boys here's Evander!! If you think naming them is dumb, it's allowed when you watch them for years, and they break 200"!!

No doubt one of the best bucks taken in OR this year. possibly the best ever taken on that tag. anyone looking at this considering applying don't think this is what you're looking for.

Net never matters unless you make the minimum I've found. then it's an F'ing big deal, because it is.

Did that hunter stay up all night in front of that tent boiling and bleaching that skull??

Its becoming more common do it out there while hunting due to CWD laws in different states. Not saying this is why on this particular one but for a lot of states it would be the case...

This wasn't the 154C hunt either as you could probably tell by the weather, which is even more impressive. Great story behind it as well. After watching him and getting trail cam pics for three years, he hadn't seen the buck for a couple months leading up to season. Got news a buddy he went to high school with had passed the day before they were leaving to go up to camp. He and two other of his high school buddies were up there (along with some family as well) he found him at first light opening morning. Special buck for many reasons.

Great Oregon buck! Guess there's still a chance!

Like the M&M commerical, they do exist!!! lol

There's always a chance. If there were any other bucks running around up there like this one, or even close to this one. It wouldn't be posted anywhere public, I promise that. It's a truly dismal hunt, unfortunately. Buddy spent 68 days up there this year to be able to get him killed. Had he not killed this one, he didn't even have another buck that would go 155" picked out.... Pretty sad!!
