Western USA ranchers are selling and relocating to more livestock friendly regions though. Leaving behind a new culture not necessarily interested in the benefit and value beef brings to society nor the same level of care for the land to raise said beef. Happy beef + healthy lands = increased profits in ranch country that trickle through communities. Quite different than those buying up these ranches today more so for their personal retreat or hobby approach. I have witnessed several in NW Colorado go this way.
 
It costs $750-$1000 a year to keep a cow? No wonder I don't have any cows. I don't have the room anyway.
 
If anything in this persons post is remotely accurate, then the answer to her question is because ranchers suck at 1st grade level math. Who is forcing ranchers to sell at a loss?
