You shootin'?

Last morning of your limited draw muley hunt. It took you 12 years to draw this tag. You've scouted 3 bucks you figure are 190+, but haven't laid eyes on them all season. Suddenly, this guy shows up. You've never seen him before. You shootin'??

In a second. I'd shoot, be thrilled, and never look back. I've been a happy hunter for years because I can appreciate a 'monster' regardless of what some score sheet says. ------SS

Yep, I’m shootin’

Where I come from (Utah) that’s considered the new standard for non-typicals…(more than 2 pts per side).

Count your blessings if your shooting bucks like that on a Gen season Utah tag. Wouldn’t expect much more than that on a LE tag either.

Plus, that buck has a bleached mohawk

Oh yeah. I’d shoot. I passed on a nice 4x3 this fall that I still have second thoughts about. Not as wide as this one, but a beautiful buck.

I would have but all I saw was a fork horn just nearly past a spike the last day
Tag soup was very blan this year

He'd be the biggest buck I would have killed to date so I would shoot him mid-season if need be.

Naw……… this buck wasn’t there to hunt, in the original question.

It Christmas, so we got time to play “gotcha”. Least til the ladies get the sweet-po-taters ready.

So, my turn………

Would you shot this buck, or give him another year or two?

Yer turn……?

There's probably less than a 10 percent chance of it returning next year. Is it worth the risk to wait for nothing? Most people would say no.

Well……. It would be a 70 per cent chance, on a huge private ranch….. and while we’re fun’en each other, we could throw that in too…… or not. ???

Hey Lumpy!

I Think I Might Try Him!:D

His Chances Of Living Another Year Would Be Slim I'd Hope!:D

Our problem is………. Most of us, not all of us, but most believe the probability of even allowing this one to survive another year are very very low, so……… if there is the likelyhood a hunter leaves even this buck, someone will kill him anyway………. because…………. (you already know why) that is what is available and the folks that sold the hunter the tag believe that is what 75% of us want and that, then, is precisely what they are convinced you 75% want them to provide, and not mature bucks.

Been hunting 50 years now and never seen anything close to those
If that’s what I’m holding out for I’d have never killed a deer in my life

And life is shorter then you think
In the early 1980’s Utah was running around 3 to 5 buck per hundred doe, “most” of the bucks like those where dead before you started hunting, 50 years ago. “Most” not all, of these pictures are of the remnants, that still show up every now and again, somewhere in the west.

Why?

Because hunters don’t want them. They’d rather have yearlings, if it means less hunting opportunity. With the hope, that maybe, just maybe, if they get back in far enough, if they get lucky, if they draw a LE tag someday, maybe, just maybe, one like these will show up. Leaving it for next year probably isn’t going to help though, unless it’s on 50,000 acres of private and you have first chance at it every year.

According to surveys and the interpretation of survey answers provided by the hunters, who take the survey, the age class of the bucks we hunt on most units, on public land, we want to shot yearlings and that’s what is being managed for. 70-75% of our hunters demand it and are perfectly happy with it. And…… so am I, and so is elkassassin, I think, because we don’t care anymore, the future belongs to the next generation.

Cameras are good enough for me now days.

Yer happy, I’m happy.

Happy New Year cm. Love your photos.

Ya!

I Know Your Dad A little!

Just A Little Over A Year Ago We Were On An LE Unit During The Rut!

I Never Seen Him Once Make The Reach For What's Under The Seat!:D:D:D

Bess, don't let Lumpy fool you. It has to be that big before I can even get him to get his gun out of the case these days.

I am a meat hunter these day age has made the high country out of reach
Even the g&f walk in areas are to far from parking to hunting then I can walk and still get the animal out. Still I want a large buck not a wall hanger I’d rather see my grandchildren get those
I have P&Y bucks on my wall and some nice white tails shot with a rifle
But mule deer and elk must be archery or they don’t mean as much to me
Hunting was always how close not how far
Now it’s how close can I get the truck to it after the shot is it up hill from the road cuz I can’t breath to pack it up hill
So my fail safe is…… the pictures are easy to pack out don’t eat well but at least I make it back to the truck alive

Might be when I was younger I was all about bowhunting or coyote calling
Rifle seasons I’d hunt whitetail if I didn’t fill my tag on a mule deer with my bow
I’d pick the biggest mule deer in my favorite spot and hunt only him
Now everone drives in there with side by sides back then we never drove in there after the 4th of july
It has completely ruined the spot

Yup, I hate’em. Never gave in until 2004. Still hate’em. My mistake was taking out an oath that I’d never own a horse that ate $100 a ton hay…….. dumb!

"Don't think just do!" Nice buck and you had a full season filled with memories. So...where is he now?

It depends on where he is in relation to the truck. He would get awfully heavy since he's not the target buck. I'm all about energy conservation at my age.

I'd shoot him, or at least try.

But I do agree on leaving those young bucks. I haven't shot a mule deer in Wyoming in 8-10 years. This year I shot a whitetail buck, a bull elk and a cow elk. If you want to make the world a better place for mule deer, shoot a whitetail or a couple of elk. I know, I should have shot a whitetail doe too. But I didn't get the license soon enough and they sold out faster than I anticipated.

I'm gonna shoot his buddy that was just up the road ?. But to answer yes I would shoot, get him out while making as much noise as possible so whatever bigger buck was going to show himself doesn't and not look out either side of the truck until I was out of the unit ??

I can't get him to look my way! All my pics of him are from the rear or side.

Absolutely I would! He is a great buck just not much for score, but score doesn't mean that much to me, just make sure he is a older buck!
