Prices seem to be starting to go back up in same places. Salina, Utah still looking good, if your traveling I-70 through the State.

Topped off at the Love's in Salina Thursday morning. Salina should have some of the highest prices in the state because heading east on I-70 the next place for gas is green river and that's over 100 miles away. Why they are always among the cheapest is a head-scratcher.

Even in Bicknell and Loa it was $3.20 while here in Delta it was $3.45 at the same time.

Back in the good ole' days of Trump I believe it was 2019 I filled up some barrels in Salina and bought 350 gallons for $1.27 a gallon. I sure miss those mean tweets.

I think it’s because there are at least 8 legitimate gas stations. Four on the freeway exit. Perfect example of what free market, free enterprise and competitive buying/selling will do. And, as you mentioned it’s a natural place to refuel regardless of the direction your going, either east or west.

The 100 miles without another source makes a difference

Years ago the cheapest gas was always the Flying J west of Brigham City, then for a while it was the Flying J in Nephi. The last two years Salina has been the one.

When Pilot bought out Flying J the dynamics changed. Also Maverik is making a huge push for market share, it seems. I ran across a Maverik down in New Mexico last week. First time I’ve seen one south of Colorado. It all helps when these gas retailers compete for customers. Merging large corporations never seems to help the buying public. There has been too much of that in the fuel industry over the last 50 years. This is a refreshing break.

Those are great prices. The lowest we saw on our Texas RV road trip was $2.58. We are $3.49 in Idaho Falls right now!!

Yet look at Beaver, it has always had some of the highest prices along I-15. There are quite a few stations and it isn't nearly as far down the road for other options to fuel up. Richfield is close to Salina, it has many more stations and the cost is higher than Salina.

It would seem there are some locations that have price wars and some that have wink and a nod price fixing. Often the excuse they give is a longer distance for hauling the fuel from the refinery. That is pure B.S., There are places further from refineries that are cheaper than many closer locations. I used to haul fuel in another life and dispatch would redirect us to a refinery much further out of the way if it's a couple pennies cheaper a gallon.

You do realize Maverick and Flying J we're owned by the same family back in the day? They owned an oil refinery too. There wasn't competition between Maverick and Flying J. One was for average folks, the other for trucking companies. Same refinery delivered to both, using same trucks.

Flying J didn't merge. The dad died, the son drank himself to death and crashed the company along the way. The pieces, including a bank that financed all the the enterprises were broken up and bought.

I shoulda detoured to the southern route during my elk trip. Coulda had some nice biscuits too. Maybe.

My kids filled their car in Laramie, WY just before Christmas and gas was $2.09/gal.

Not sure if it is still that price or not.

You should have. Here’s the deal……. Give me 30 minutes warning feddoc, all dash over to McDonald, pick up a half dozen biscuits, run into the grocery store, grab a Pioneer Sausage Gravy mix and some Jimmy Dean Sausage and whip you up a fact simile of biscuits and gravy.

Or……. We can just go to Larsen’s Ace Hardware, they make the best in Utah for $3.95, while we’re there you can buy yourself a nice new 6.5 Creedmoor and a flat brim hunting hat.

What a great way to celebrate the New Year.

I just printed this out and added it to my recipe book. Thanks, 2Lumpy. Happy New Year! :)

Larsen's Ace Hardware? isn't that in Richfield?

Yes Sir, it is.
I first met a couple of the Larson's I think it was the dad and a couple of his boys on the ferry from Ketchikan to Prince of Wales. We were going on a spring black bear hunt and so were they, back when you could buy a bear tag over the counter. I think it was about 2006 and I was the Hunting Dept. manager at Hurst Ace hardware in St. George back when they had a hunting department.

They are good people.

$7.49 at Safeway for Whole Milk
Time to visit your closest Dairy and get used to whole milk or buy a crème separator. Make you and the dairyman both better off. This isn’t the first time milk has been drank without a Safeway involved.

Of course it is.

? Can you own a milk cow in Calif Homer? To feed the cats, I mean.

It generally one that looks like these, for the benefit of those that don’t know where their milk comes from. I know almond milk comes from a bunch of nuts but cows milk comes from an animal similar to the one your prime rib roasts come from.

Black and White for milk.
All Black for prime rib.

You can get milk from either and prime rib from both but trust me, black for meat, black and white for milk.

Just try’na help the young folk here a-bouts. Not offense intended for you older Calif gentlemen and ladies.

The industry also continues to produce calf-fed Holsteins, which grade a higher percentage of Prime than any other breed.

No Dairy here on Kauai. Everything has to be imported.

Those beef cows give milk, just as much and not as rich in crème. Back in the 50/60s we milked our own, they were all beef cows.

With the price of eggs going up, maybe you’ll have to start rounding up those chickens and get into egg poultry business. I know you don’t eat the chickens but their eggs should be delicious. ?. Shouldn’t be too hard to gather up a couple dozen hens and get to it.
