A high country Wyoming September cape or a full rut Colorado cape??? I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda fond of the short haired ones. Probably because I haven't had the chance to harvest a deer that time of year.

Like them both the ruttin buck is really nice but the double throat patch on the early buck is super nice also

I’ve always liked the September capes but that rut cape is what dreams are made of.
Beautiful work on both bucks, those look as natural as any I’ve ever seen.

No contest for me... those CO bucks are gorgeous. Its the reason I've hunted those Book Cliffs bucks in eastern UT, gorgeous capes.

WY bucks have some of the plainest, grayest, ugliest capes I've seen... My uncle killed a beautiful WY buck last year, never seen another like it out of the area. The one you posted above has some good color on it as well. I think they are the exception and not the rule...

Both mounts look awesome, all preference aside.

I have a couple early season mounts. But the late winter coat is beautiful too! Maybe mount up one of those one day but I'm sticking with the early season hunts for the foreseeable future

This is the actual buck off the rut cape. Sureshot's son harvested. Been waiting for that pic to pop up. One of my favorite pics. Love seeing youth in the outdoors. Thanks again Scott.

I love seeing the last July, early August bucks on the mountain, in the velvet. Thus the slick reddish brown look, in puffy velvet.

But with me there is always a “however”……., I can’t stand the nasty, dusty, look of an any animal mounted in the velvet. Especially after they have been hanging for a few years.

So…… for a mounted buck I like the early gray, before it gets to looking like a ruffed up prize fighter, in mid November.
