Nevada Winter 22-23'

I thought I would start a thread here to keep tabs on the snowfall and range conditions for Nevada this winter season. Nevada is one of the greats and with the right conditions, wouldn't rather have a tag anywhere else. Big storm hitting the west coast right now hope it dumps across the Silver State.

Not to optimistic, the last two la Nina years have given us a big storm or two then it just quit. Hopefully this third la Nina won't be the same.

How is northern NV doing for rain/snow, looks like this moisture has been making its way over the Sierras pretty good the last couple weeks.

Solid precip everyday here in the Truckee meadows. Mix of rain and snow. Mountains look great and the eastern Sierras are packing in the snow!——SS

Most of the Sierra Nevada range within a 100 miles of Reno had already received 100% to 125% of a full winter’s water content. I’m not sure how well the central ranges are doing but the storms have been relatively warm so winter range should be getting a lot of rain instead of deep snow.

Fallon has received more snow this year than the past two. Most of the storms were expected to be more sleet or rain but we have had four surprise snow dumps, one dropped 4-6 inches. That being said, the Stillwater, Shoshone, Toiyabe and Monitor ranges should be holding a good pack! Stillwaters look deep out east every morning.

Info on current Sierra snowpack.

Same story in those ranges as well. Lots of snow. More than I recall at least since 96/97, possible 92/93, though I was only 9 in 92/93.

This will be an interesting one to watch. Mid level snowpack will get primed. If we get more storms next week, we should see some pretty significant water release after the pounding this weekend.

The truckee river was down about two feet from yesterday water a lot of water went over the spill way at derby damn. Lots of trees and limbs in the spill way. Not bad yet.

Any update on the Deer and Antelope herds here? I heard Wyoming had a major die off some where over 200,000 animals, with more fatality reports coming in. How is the Elko area?

A very reliable source told me the herd in the Rubies is in horrible shape.

Just spoke with the bio out of Elko discussing the Rubies. They are seeing 50% fawn mortality and about 20% adult mortality. Sounds like there are going to be some huge tag cuts due to the hit the deer herd room this winter.
I assume a good portion of that 20% adult mortality are older age class bucks.

Are there any older age class bucks in the Rubies?

NR Rifle deer tags in 101-109 reduced from 150 down to 36 tags. NR Archery from 73 total to 47.

Res from about 3300 total combined tags down to about 1400.

Overall about a 60% reduction in total tags. Around 70% decrease in rifle tags across the board.

Well that just sent my odds to the toilet!

Going to be a very tough year to draw a tag in NV in general with the reduction in tags. Guys with zero BP's (me) will have Utah type odds.
