northern utah elk tips

im hoping to draw a elk permit this year for northern Utah and was wondering if anybody had any tips

cz144, forgive these guys, it's a tough bunch sometimes.

But, how familiar are you with Utah, and the draw process?

It can be tough to pull a tag unless you've already been accumulating points, which you may have done. If so, you may very well be set to draw that tag this year, we don't know your situation.

If you're not already sitting on enough points, I hope you are young, patient, and prepared for a lot of frustration.

hunting cache, meadowville and i know my way around the area pretty well lived here for 12 years have put in every year for 5 year and got nothing

Just curious....never hunted elk but put in for 5 years? What exactly do you expect to kill with a hard to draw tag (LE)? I’d at least be doing some general season hunting to learn elk behavior and test/grow your skills so that when the big draw day comes....you are somewhat ready. Plan on hiring a guide service?

the behavior is not the problem i went to school for wildlife biology and have worked with elk before, its just i'm a rookie when it comes to elk hunting and had nobody to show me the ropes and its not the cheapest hobby to get into so i'm giving it my best i have been deer hunting though so i'm not in the dark

Probably the only LE unit in Utah to to be under subscribed until very recently.

If you have the coin you can get access and be successful. Shouldn't be too difficult.

No coin and it gets much more difficult.

If you draw that tag and live close to the area, I could show you some spots this summer, Kearls has a lot of good ground in that unit leased, but I’ve seen a few bulls get taken in there
thanks i appreciate it

I guess no need to explain elk behavior then. As far as hunter behavior goes, success comes at a cost. Plan on keeping a hunting journal on the species hunted. Record times you saw them, temperatures, locations, etc. After a few hunts, read your journal before you go again. You will be reminded of the little details that you forgot. Plan on staying out from dark to dark each day. My rule is “Never see camp in the daylight unless you put one down”. Do not move around a lot. Stay consistent with 1 or 2 areas. Elk move alot within a routine area (but you know this already as it is a characteristic of their behavior). And lastly, don’t discount any advice from someone who’s killed elk every year for the past 18 years (none of which have been cows) because rarely does advice come freely.

thank you i can not tell you how much i appreciate it i was kind of scared to ask about it but thanks for showing me otherwise

Take Cooper's offer. Lots of private and lots of hidey holes.
Id probably put in elsewhere and hope I win the lottery, then buy a general season tag for the experience.

Great gesture cooper thats how it should be

A lot can be learned with scouting and seeing what passes by on a trail cam. Keep in mind that elk will be in certain areas certain times of the year. Hunting pressure will also impact where they hang out and where they retreat to.

The sagebrush in that unit are underrated and overlooked for elk a lot of elk are there you just have to find them and they are there year round

Looks like 4 points was guaranteed last year for the early hunt, so you should draw out, if this is year 6 of putting in you should have drew out last year.

well i was not the only one who didn't draw and with the amount of people that put in last year, there wasn't any OTC tags for deer or elk not even for the youth hunt, the archery sold out too.

Well then you didn't put in for the Cache Meadowville hunt because everyone that put in for it with 4 points drew out.

hell even 2 of the 6 guys with 3 points drew out.

If you draw let me know and I’ll pm you my number and we can meet up, my buddy drew that tag a couple of years ago and I can show you where we mostly saw elk!!
My buddies wife just got a call that someone surrendered there tag. No time to scout can you guide us in the right direction. Much appreciated.

I would really appreciate that. Its her first big game animal she is trying to take so a good experience will keep her hopes high.

Don’t take this personal. You can be a master biologist but not every unit is the same. You should go up every season and spike hunt with your bow and be there on the early rifle and muzzy with calls and a camera calling in those bulls. Cause if you aren’t where those big bulls are it’s gonna make it harder to kill an upper end bull.

still up for helping a guy out with info. Drew the tag and need a good starting point.

With that kind of luck, you have plenty of time to figure it out soyshaun. I'd be checking the archives here for posts on that unit. Any way you look at it you should have a great time!
