Favorite Back to Civilization Meal

Ten years ago my son and I did an 8 day backpack fishing trip over the top of Wyoming's Windrivers. We ate fish and Mountain House for most of our meals, and we didn't see another soul, which was incredible.
On our way back out (25 miles) we planned to get back over the top and camp, then hike back to the trailhead. However, after getting over the top we still had a fair amount of daylight and thinking about eating a hamburger at the end we just pushed on.
We didn't get back to the truck until after eleven and by the time we got to Pinedale all eating establishments were shut down...no juicy hamburger!
BUT the next morning we found a cafe with breakfast and plate sized pancakes. It was way better than the Hamburger we had envisioned and thinking about it still makes my mouth water.
What is your favorite back to civilization meal?

Subway seems to be where I go after most scouting trips. Once home though, I've craving custard.

Years ago my buddy and I backpacked in about 2 miles. It snowed near all day the first day, then on day two it was still snowing, but we got to talking about good food. After an hour of talking, we left all our gear, took off back to the ATV's, then to the truck, then to Pizza Hut. Man that was good!!!!
We returned to our remote camp and it was still snowing, so back into the tent we went. Pizza can do that sometimes!!!

5 Guys cheeseburger with nearly everything on it is what works for me and my hunting buddy after we get out from a backpacking hunt. Funny things is several years ago we were doing our normal 5 Guys with a couple average general season muzzleloader bucks in the back of our truck. We sat down and I thought I recognize the guy a few tables over from us but was not sure. I kept staring until I finally had to ask if it was Founder. Yep it was Founder having some dinner with his wife.

Used to be that I would go to a local pizza place and get a Supreme calzone: sausage pepperoni onions peppers jalapeños. Last time I tried to order and step out to do an errand while the 20 min passed to cook it. They wouldn't let me for some obscure reason... I said " I ll pay for it, u put it on table if I m not back. If u need to use table or whatever, u can throw it in the trash." They still wouldn't do it. The place was less than half full on a weekday around 2pm. Have not been back. I crave a good burger and steak fries now! Not fast food.

As soon as I began reading your post and saw Five Guys, our encounter shot to my mind!!
You guys had a couple sweet bucks.

Burgers and pizza are for townies…….. it’s fresh liver and onions for country boys.

I ‘ll bet eel heads right for the crab sandwiches.

Years ago I first went through a mini survival school as part of flight school. Three days/nights of cold weather listening to AC 130s on night firing missions. No food.

I got back and had 5 big macs.

SERE school. Minimal food. Less sleep. Less ravenous eating.

McDonald’s or Burger King. When we camp for archery deer season in December and January in the low desert, we go to town a few times for food. It’s not too big of a deal since sometimes you have 12+ hours of dark and you need to do something. It’s nice to be hunting near Globe, AZ because there are many good Mexican restaurants to go to.

When I was 18, I also did a Wind River backpacking, fishing, and rock climbing trip. After 5 nights of decent back country food, the two Big Macs and fries I ate on the way home tasted like heaven...

I also like the Pizza Hut in Mountain View WY after hunting the Uintas for several days...

It takes me a couple weeks but eventually I get over missing greasy food. My body tells me it's not good. A hamburger doesn't even sound good. My big craving has always been for a Pineapple milkshake though. I'll stop at the first place that has them. Eventually I get back in the groove though. It's been a long time since I've been out that long.

Greenriver is more than 50 miles out of the way from pretty much everywhere! ;)
It’s worth it. The fries are the best

9.00 bacon cheeseburger? FINALLY A REASON TO VISIT UTAH
That’s an old menu. Inflation has definitely migrated to Ray’s. Think it was about $14 with fries this year, but if you make the trip down from the great white north, the burgers are on me.

Typically a rodeo cold Busch light that’s been in the back seat of the truck for a week and then a burger or pizza when I finally make it to town.

A big fat juicy steak! Whether I'm coming out from a backpack hunt or just plain dieting, my biggest craving always seems to be red meat. Must be the carnivore in me.

After returning from extended backpacking trips, a big, juicy burger is my first choice. A nice big plate of Mexican food will do the trick in a pinch as well.

A couple years ago my son’s boy scout troup had a summer adventure trip. We hiked a loop in Montana’s Bob Marshal wilderness with backpacks for five days. When we got back to the trail head we all loaded up in the vehicles and drove back to Augusta MT. I can’t remember the name of the bar but it was right on the main drag in town. They had agreed to feed us on the day we were scheduled to get back to town. They had an outside BBQ pit and were making freshly ground beef burgers (they said the beef was from a local ranch) cooked to order with the trimmings. Man was that good after 5 days of freeze dried meals and trail mix! ;)

Camping and fishing for reds 3 days almost every weekend during the run in Alaska always hit up Carls Jr biggest burger they had was always good. DQ burgers close 2nd.

My wife and I packed a buck out all day and night after a week of backpacking in WY. Instead of sleeping in the truck we decided to head to Pinedale to stay in a hotel for a day and get cleaned up and rest etc... The only thing open was a gas station, but that frozen hamburger was one of the best I've ever had.

This thread is hilarious. When i started reading it, i thought of all the week long pack in trips archery hunting i used to do. I would always want dairy delight old fashioned burger and a large pepsi. This is a place where i live that makes a no kidding 8" round burger. I think it's a 1 pounder. Brought back some great hunting memories. Thanks for this post

Had to be the Wrangler?

Nice choice!

My last several backpack hunts have been in the Sangre’s near Westcliffe, Co. This is the only place to go when you come out of the mountains. Steak or a big cheeseburger with everything plus jalapeños. Add in the coldest beer imaginable. Great time with good people.

My wife and I did a Winds trip about 35 years ago. Five days in the backcountry eating God only knows what and our first meal out was a cheeseburger, fries and 2 Budweisers at a restaurant in Pinedale. I remember camping at Borum Lake. Prettiest and HIGHEST place I’ve ever slept. If I recall, 11,000’+. But the place in Pinedale may as well been Ruths Chris. That meal was awesome.

Mine are often in Pinedale too. Used to be a little walk-up on the NE side of the highway that had great burgers. It was just SE of Falers. The fries were aplenty and they came in a huge soda cup. I had many double burgers there in the 80's and 90's. It's gone now.

Now it is the Wrangler or the little food trailer with the burgers on the south end of Pinedale. They have great burgers too. Both places are excellent.

I also love the Crossing Cafe in Elk Mountain. Great burgers and home made fresh cut fries.

And if you want to go first class, the Wolf Hotel in Saratoga is great, too. Burgers or steaks. Then a soak in the Hobo Pool.

Just something hot, preferably greasy, and not healthy for you. Usually ends up being a big burrito with chiles, pizza, chili burger, etc.

We’ve cooked mountain lion backstraps on that exact grill before!
