I drew the Wyoming Elk Super Tag !!

Hey Everyone,
I was lucky this year and drew the Wyoming Elk Super Tag , still can’t believe it ..

Little back ground information on me , lifelong resident of Oregon . I grew up hunting blacktail deer and elk and just love being in the outdoors . I’ve never shot a bull over 300” so I feel like this is my opportunity to harvest a great bull and just have an overall awesome experience in Wyoming this coming fall .

With that being said I’ve been researching as much as possible the last few weeks , making phone calls to all the hunt advisors I know and have had lots of residents and non residents reach out with different unit suggestions and ideas ( Great information).

It’s a tough decision to make when I can hunt basically any unit any season ,definitely want to make the most of my time while I’m there . With that I’ve narrowed it downed to 4-5 units ( at least for now ) and after the commission meets and sets tag numbers I think I’ll be able to get down to 2-3 units but feel really fortunate I have lots of time to research and then go out and do a little recon trip this summer just to learn road systems and see the country in person .

I also haven’t ruled out hiring a guide but I am leaning towards DIY with somebuddies so I can take advantage of hunting multiple seasons vs just hunting a 5-7 day window of time .

With that I’d like to get your opinion and curious what your dream unit or units to hunt elk would be if you drew the Super Tag and which route you would go ( Guided or DIY ) ,if you do have an outfitter you’d recommend please tell me who ? Feel free to PM me as well, definitely don’t expect anyone to give up honey holes or anything or valuable advice on a public forum ..!

Thanks ,
Chris

Congratulations on drawing a great tag! I have hunted a few units in WY but I'm sure there are others on here with more experience so I will leave the suggestions to them.
Whatever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy the hunt!!!!

if youre willing to go guided and make the actual best out of that tag for a once in a lifetime like you should be looking at it....Trails West Outfitter, Boulder Basin Outfitters, South Fork Outfitters would all be at least worth a phone call to see what they have to say. Personally for me, big bulls in big country on the back of a horse is what I love about elk hunting. and all those outfits hunt areas and tags that 350+ is easily doable. Josh and trails west has taken numerous super tag hunters, and you could hunt early season and come back for late season if you didnt find a giant the first trip id bet. But, at very least I think they are worth a phone call for you if the idea of a guided wilderness backcountry hunt in a few of the best areas in the state is of interest to you

What happened to all the "pay your monster muley dues before we give you advice newbie" posts? Cleish, consider yourself lucky. Congrats on a great tag! looking forward to reading about your experience.

He didn't ask for honey holes. Sounds like he is already losing sleep over it. Haha

Well, there's no "feel good" pretense about his ask and not ruled out guided.

Congrats on an awesome tag! I've got nothing for you but a little bit of jealousy.

Hope you swing back by once you've killed your bull and share a few pics and maybe a story.

Not a bad tag to have in your pocket!

DIY is certainly satisfying but to make the most of the tag and get the BIGGEST bull possible, I'd go outfitted....but that's just me.

Besides the obvious perks of a guide, going with an outfitter would also let you access the wilderness areas that you wouldn't be able to DIY in Wyoming. As far as I know, even with the super tag there's a ton of land you can't hunt by yourself.

Sorry to hear that.

You should beware, you sir are now on the hate list.

It's your fault the Res can't kill elk. Your fault that Wyoming allows NR to buy lotto tickets.

So my advice

First. Rent a truck WITH WYOMING PLATES.

Second . Start drinking Bud Light and ALWAYS toss the cans out the window, ESPECIALLY on public land.

3. DO NOT stop anywhere near an interstate for gas(lots of "fine" working ladies in the parking lots).

4. Don't buy any groceries, gas, supplies in Wyoming. It doesn't matter to the local economies.

5. Enjoy your public land, oh, except for the parts that are public, but only for fishing, hiking, etc. You know, Grizzlies only eat hunters so you'll need "a guide" to show you how to properly be eaten.

6.Be sure to start your hunt 3 days AFTER it begins. Ya, no one else will have your tag, but the locals need 3 days to detox off the meth, get to the store to burn their EBT balance, siphon their neighbors gas, so they can not go hunt, not kill elk, but damn sure blame some rando from Oregon for "screwing them".

Good luck man!!
Now this is funny and factual, haha

You don't need to go guided to shoot a 330+ bull. However, if you want to hunt near Yellowstone, and have a very realistic chance at a 350"+ bull, I think guided in that region is your best bet.

Congrats on an awesome tag!

Me personally I would hunt it DIY as that's what I like to do. However, it's not my tag so I'd say if 300" is good you could easily pull it off yourself, 330" good chance, 350" a lot slimmer but still possible.

If you want the biggest bull you can get then a guide is the way to go.

However, these are just opinions.

That's about right

Congrats on the tag, now all the fun begins.
I will say this, patiently make your decision and gather all information and make a thoughtful decision. I knew a guy who drew a Silver State elk tag, it turned into a semi curse. Called me late in the game asking about outfitters. He did kill a great bull 350, but it can turn into a sh*t show if you let it. Good luck for great memories.

The problem with that tag is narrowing down the experience you want to have. Wy has elk in every type of habitat that elk live in throughout the west. I would first narrow that aspect of it down, that will help you get it down to a few units. Also if you have the time I would do DIY, find a big bull end of August and kill him early Sept with your bow - if you can live without the bugling rut aspect of it. Before the big bulls have a pile of cows to pick you off on a stalk. Wy has so many units with similar quality the terrain I think should be first decision.

Late season hunt all the way. I would focus on that. Take advantage of low numbers of other hunters in the feild. Take advantage on the migration and big bulls. These are hunts that typically take max points and you have the opportunity to swoop right in.

If you can afford it some good outfitters have been suggested and there is some other good ones to use.

We don't really hate NR. Mostly we just hate a$$holes.

To the OP: If you decide on areas 30,31,32,100,124, pm me.

Even though you're on the "hate" list, I would be glad to share some info with you. You should be able to kill 300+ on your own...no problem...if you have time. Archery hunting can be extremely exciting in those units!

Congrats on the tag!!! Some solid info from others all depending what you’re looking for! Whatever you decide , I’m sure it will be a good time !!

Have you ever been elk hunting? Congrats on the tag but no need to post on an a$$kicker forum and brag?! Ask where to go?

You did your research so go hunt then.

Believe most would spend money as we don’t have time and go guided and hammer a smoker!

Not so sure on the guide thing, but I'd be sure to find who can set you up with pack horses and into some of the north west units in late season.

A bunch of those units require a guide in the wilderness for early archery and would be worth a look if you could do two hunts depending on success early.

I'm a bow guys so I'm tainted for sure.

Cheers, Pete

Don’t go guided. An extra 10-20 points ( if that even happens) isn’t worth 10k and nothing is guaranteed anyway. All the 10k will do is put more pressure on you and make the hunt less enjoyable. Hunt with friends and enjoy the process. You can pick the type of hunt you want what do you need a guide for? Hell you can go to unit 100 and find plenty of bulls better than 300 from a truck window. If you have time just jump units until you find one that makes you happy. No guide needed to kill a nice bull with that golden ticket. Congrats and good luck!

Concensus is NW late hunt if you can swing 10k for a guide.
Agreed ??, I’m working on it .. Just hate misting all of the good early season hunts and going all in on the late season hunts up there .. Guess I thought of that more as a plan B or C option , problem is putting a big deposit down and losing that if I shoot a bull early but is what is I guess .. ??.

That’s awesome congrats! I was lucky enough to draw an OIL tag in Utah back in 2020. People said I was crazy not hiring a guide but I was committed and did a ton of homework. I flew out to the area in the summer to scout for 8 days and develop base camp and hunt strategies. I also made the choice I’d only archery hunt. You have a ton of options on units as well as hunt seasons. I would put focus on archery season (nothing like screaming bulls in the rut) and if you don’t get it done you may spot some shooters you then could pursue during rifle. Good Luck!

Did you have luck?

I would not go guided unless it was for a wilderness experience with horses. Remember if it is inches you are worried about you add 50 for DIY and another 80 For public land?.

I’d pick unit 54 where it is closer to your home. It’s in park county where some of the biggest bulls historically have come out of. You can hunt non wilderness, you can hunt archery all of September and gun it October 1st. Rugged country but with a few buddies tagging along to help pack out. Learn the unit real good and have a hell of a hunt. My vote go DIY in 54

Speaking from a little experience of having a once in a lifetime elk tag, here’s a piece of advice a fellow Monster Muley member gave me when I got lucky: capture and document the story of your hunt on video, with photos, and with written words ... for you and your family to relive the great memories you’re about to make, not for social media. We did that on my hunt and I’m glad we did.

Congratulations on your good fortune! Enjoy every minute of the process. Your hunt will be over before you know it.

Does the super tag allow you to do both on units that have type 1, 2 and 9 archery only seasons? Type 1 and 2 can't archery hunt 54 anymore since I think 2017.

I have a ton of experience and video's in 54 for archery if the OP ever decides to go there. It's super tough skirting of private for the archery hunt and not one I'd pick with that tag.

Cheers, Pete

With the way wild game is going you better shoot the first good six point you see... ;)

I'd view and plan like this is two hunts. I'd hit archery season and the first part of gun season in the northwest section with the idea that your not shooting anything unless it's really really big. If it sits in your lap and you just can't help yourself, then take a picture. Then I'd plan to go down south late, where you can get your tag punched on a 300" bull. This is all coming from a guy who has never actually hunted elk in WY, or been in any of the units mentioned, or had a tag like yours. I haven't recently stayed at a holiday inn either so....

I do think the opinion of talking with a guide and lining up some sort of late hunt without having to lose your a## if you killed early would be doable with the nature of your tag and the options that come with it. There's a way to make that work for everyone. Make some phone calls and get creative, the option thats gonna work isn't listed on the website.

Good luck and have fun. Think about who your having go with you, that has a lot to do with the experience. A group dynamic can make things great, or not so great. Hopefully you guys have hunted together before and everyone kinda fits in their rolls so to speak. Just because someone is a killer doesn't mean you guys will hunt well together or that they will fit in with your group.
