Shed Hunting-WY Resident Head Start

Not hard for them to post up check stations and check on people! I see them in plain clothes doing checks during season too.

Nr shed hunters are usually easy to spot. Always have 3 or 4 campers circled like wagons. Each person has their own atv. Usually blocking an access road into somewhere. Travel in herds. Rare to find a group with more then 1 antler a piece ?

Game warden: “Sir can I see your conservation stamp?”
Flat brimmer: “No, I’m a resident”
Game warden: “Pleas show me proof you are a resident”
Flat brimmer: “Where does the law say I need to prove I’m a resident? I don’t have to show you anything “
Game warden: “Have a nice day”

That’s why I think GnF will have to make some sort of permit for residents. Like bookhead said I’m sure they will figure it out.

You seem very hung up on how to get away with shed hunting the first 7 days as a NR. Not only would a NR be breaking the shed law, they would be committing false oath telling a warden they are a resident. Two tickets for the price of one!

Yeah let us know how it works out for you refusing to provide ID to law enforcement.

Found this in recent news about the bill. This comment cracks me up:

"Laura Pearson, a southwestern Wyoming sheep rancher, said she’d like to see an exception made for immigrant shepherds employed by Wyoming residents.

Those shepherds often make “a little extra money” by collecting and selling shed antlers, and should be allowed to go out during the first few days of the season, she said."

I am all for a license to collect antlers for the entire state. How about $1 for residents and $1500 for NR? If you take the profit out of antler collecting then 7 days won't really matter. Plus they will suspend your hunting privileges if you get caught without a license.

As long as the "shepherds" are on private land they can knock themselves out...

I'm just saying they are fine to collect on private. If you see them collecting on public turn them in.
Those guys pretty much do what they want anyway they live out there most of the spring and summer into fall and allot of them don't speak engish. I'm sure some of them will get pinched. And anyone that wants to risk their hunting privileges in wyo over shed hunting....have fun with that

I'll miss this tradition with my family... ??

Jackson area should be no different than the rest of the areas, the horns are on public land and will fall under this ruling. might have to bring a couple extra pack horses next year without the non-res scum up there! haha

Gre

Great I might have to try it this year without
A 3 mile long line of non residents!

I’ve been asked for my WY hunting license once. Told him I’d rather not dig it out of my pack that was lashed to my quad and he was fine with it when I told him everything was signed.

Bob, I heard you tell this before and that's not the way it always works and you know it. If he wanted you to produce the license, by law you have to.

It was interesting, about 3 weeks ago I was on Boysen. My license just expired and I had bought one online and had a screen shot on my phone. I was going through my photos trying to find it and the warden asked my last name, DOB and was able to search it up. He recognized me and was cool, but in the end I never produced proof. I am not sure how he had service where we were at, maybe he had a sat linked phone?

I've seen situations where someone had no proof of a fishing license and they take your name and number and look you up when they get to service to make sure they had one but that may have been because he knew some of us idk and they can write you a ticket for it too I'm pretty sure

He looked it up right there on the ice, told me the purchase date, expiration date, my stamp status and my small game
License status and then asked how my lope hunt went last fall. He had it all in his hand as soon as he typed it in… I was surprised as I did not have any service.

Ive been checked at brooks lake in the winter before, 1 person forgot their license and they radioed the info and got a response immediately that it was all good. They dont need cell service to check a license

Well as a non-resident that’s a huge disadvantage for me and I’ve really enjoyed your state and all it’s beauty. It’s a one of a kind place and I wished I lived there. I’m thankful for all the cool places I’ve seen shed hunting up there. But it’s your state and I can’t say I blame you guys either. Social media hasn’t been the best thing for shed hunting IMO. I fear all states will be headed for shed licenses soon. I’m very surprised Idaho has very little regulation on antler hunting.

Yea should be pretty challenging for them to find out if a shed hunter is a resident or not ?

The fan boys making the insta/YouTube heros rich are to blame for this! The old school guys that been doing it for 30+ years said it Long ago it would come to this.
Hornkiller? Why do you hate NR's so much? I thought all hunters matter? Just another form of racism

I didn't imply that's how it usually works, he was a pretty relaxed warden. If he really wanted to see it I'd have dug it out.

I’m betting a non resident caught Berger and Sommers wearing their Sam smith t shirts and wearing labron James shoes and made fun

I hope they have another resident stamp you have add to your hunting lic for $30 or $40 If you don't have a hunting license they would make you buy one. That would be awesome. LOL
Look at all the money that would bring in.

Buzz you need to get on the money wagon.

How many NR shed hunt compared to Residents? Does anyone actually know the facts or is this based on opinion and Residents wanting to lessen competion?

I don’t know that there is a metric to measure facts on that, but from my observation it’s around 70/30 NR to R.
It will definitely be a more enjoyable experience for Wyomings residents!

From the sounds of it, the next step for WY residents is to ask for reparation (I think thats the right word) for lost sheds due to NR shed hunters. And the same for NR hunters during hunting season taking their precious animals. I mean why not WY RES? As long as you want to continue to BI(T# and moan, go for all of it. Why not ask for $50,000 a year while your at it!

This is awesome! One more poor soul who has Wy residents living rent free in their minds.

Took neither a ***** or a moan to make this happen. Just an ask and a couple of responsive Reps. Democracy kicks ass!

@SS! Just wanted to let you know stressing animals is real. There I was at 7am and spotted a huge buck running. He looked to be 30 inches wide. Now no shed laws where I live so I got the upper hand. I slipped on my Michael Jordan shoes and went to chasing this buck till noon. In that chase I corner hopped several times. Pretty sure I de-vauled several chunks of land since my arm was in there air space. Finally I ran the deer down to his skeletal figure. My endurance far out did this 30 inch buck. As I walked up to him being dead from stress talk about ground shrinkage. So being 7 miles from the truck I didn't see it worth the phone call to game and fish to pay a silly fee for this little buck, plus the call and to schedule to keep the antlers wasn't worth it.

In summary I got my exercise in today and went home empty handed.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Makes me laugh. I've hunted enough in Wyoming and can walk away any day. But looks like us NON RES are the ones living rent free in ALL WY RES heads. Makes me laugh ?. If we didn't, they wouldn't be complaining so much, lol! ?‍♂️

Who's complaining? Oh yea that's right all the NR

I really don’t care what they do either. I just see this turning into a huge non resident war with all states on a number of hunting issues. It’s a shame hunting became so cool on social media. On a side note I’ll head up on may 1st and sell beer, burgers, and Jack and cokes to all the shed hunters coming off the hill.

You really think this would cause a war? ?

Be sure to have a business license for your burger stand

Not a literal war SS.? Lay off the edibles. I think it’s just going to lead to western states coming up with all sorts of fees and increases and fees and a ton more rules. I’ll have the business license submitted in Wyoming tomorrow.

I know you didn’t mean a literal war. But I doubt anything is going to come of it in other states. Utah is too busy looking at themselves in the mirror.

Wont matter, cant draw or afford a tag anyway.

New legislation being initiated for states surrounding Wyoming; Any Wyoming resident will be charged a fee for traveling on or purchasing products or doing business outside of Wyoming. In addition, if any health issues require medical attention from outside Wyoming, they will need to wait 7 days or until all residents from outside of Wyoming are taken care of first.

No Book it seems like everyone who is crying about NR shed hunters on NF and BLM lands think they have the only right to the sheds. Hell I don't shed hunt and it still seems like the Wyo boys are mad because they sleep in to late.
The crap about those sheds are FS and BLM from WYO deer and elk means it Wyoming animals maybe the US Govt should charge grazing fees for the right to hunt sheds on their lands. LOL

The animals are owned by the people of the state in which the animal lives and the antlers are grown by them so ?‍♂️

Claims to not be a shed hunter ✅
Makes false claims about the issue ✅
Confuses federal and state issues ✅
Still has to comment on it ✅

Your opinion on something you know nothing about matters dearly to the residents of WY and everyone affected by the shed season. Your comment has been printed on toilet paper and will be subject to review at the restroom in little America on I 80.

yes they are wyo deer and elk, BUT the ground they live on isn't Wyoming so grazing should be handled the same as a rancher on BLM lands they pay for the right to graze onit. So why not charge Wyoming state owned animals. for that same grazing rights.

Why does everyone have a hard on for everything wyoming does. In SD non residents cant even apply for elk or bighorn sheep which live pretty much only on national forest in that state. Non residents can only hunt the west side of the state for deer. Non residents have to wait a month while residents get a 1 month head start on archery deer and a head start on pheasant hunting and many other states have the same type of bs rules but everyone only cares about wyoming get tf over it and move on seriously no one that lives here cares what you guys want to cry about anymore

I don't know where you've been shed hunting, but I'd put it closer to 90/10 where I go...It's gotten totally out of hand.

Should be a 50 lb haul on muley sheds in 2024. We hunt the same area. I have seen ya on the hill. Glad Wyoming is doing something for their residents.

You guys make it so easy to jump on the band wagon.
Book I don't live in SD right now I born and raised there and I can't get a tag where I hunt pheasants for east river deer Because I'm a NR.

That's what I'm saying almost all states have dumb rules against non residents but for some reason everyone wants to cry about wyoming doing the same kinda stuff. Wasnt anything personnel

What bandwagon? You’re the only one on the wagon trying to relate public grazing to shed antler collection.

Someone lead that wagon to the packing plant

the pathogen causing the deaths is Mycoplasma bovis, according to preliminary lab results. over 200 antelope hope it doesn't spread to other wildlife.

Question, on this shed hunting permit. If I were to just be out walking who says I'm shed hunting. I'll let my 12 yr old pick them up . I don't come out anyway to shed hunt but It would be no different if i didnt carry a rifle so I wouldnt need a hunting liscense either. You cant stop people from using public lands.

Give it a go. Will be interesting to see how it works out.

I'm not going out there to shed hunt I could care less. But it pisses me off for all the hate i"m getting. I have hunted wyoming several times and have been welcomed while I was out there. Never have I heard someone speak ill of NR's while I was there but I never bothered anyone either.

You can carry a firearm and walk on public land during hunting season without a hunting license.
