Which bullet?

Still just testing Hammer bullets. But from what I can tell, if you get low on bullets, you can get Hammer bullets where as Barnes may not be available is the size and weight you are needing to continue shooting.

I’ve always had success with Barnes, but they are becoming harder and harder to find the last few years. I feel like Barnes has thrown in the towel on production.

Either would work.

Just depends on what you want the bullet to do.

The Hammer's petals break off, vs the Barnes mushroom.

130 or so grain weight should work

Good luck.

Eta <<<< 2 experiences with Hammers. 3006 and 152 HH (now discontinued) on a sheep and 243 Win with 70 HH on a small mule deer. Both resulted in dead critters. I did recover the shank of the bullet in the sheep, 84 grains at 55 percent retention.

I was a die hard Barnes shooter until I was introduced to Hammers. Now I have so much confidence in how they shoot and perform, I only hunt big game with Hammers.

My Browning x bolt 7MM rem mag didn't like Barnes tsx. Nosler etips grouped the best and I killed a elk with ONE last year.

I killed two antelope, a mule deer and an elk with the E-Tip in 2008. Great bullet. Some rifles won't shoot them well. mtmuley

What game are you going to hunt ? It seems like you hunt with what you can find these days. Although it is getting better then it has been. But the good stuff is harder to find. I talked with the guys at Barnes at the expo. He said they are working 24 hour shifts. My gun shoots tighter groups with Berger's but I don't like to shoot game much bigger then mule deer with a Berger. The Barnes group well enough that a elk can't tell the difference. The Good old Nosler Partiton is a good old stand by. Unless you are shooting them so fast that they come apart. But it diffidently depends on what your rifle likes. Some rifles don't like big long cooper bullets. Like Hornady CX, Barnes ect. I would like to try some of the New CX's bullets but you can't find any !

Availability is one great reason to shoot Hammers. You order what you want online and they arrive at your house within a week. They group as well as anything my rifles have shot, including Bergers and they're easy to work up loads for.
Hammers only draw back, in my eyes, is they don't have great BC, so if you are a beyond 700yd flail away at game guy, maybe you want to shoot something else. Sorry for the rant...I'm a fan.

Between my hunting partners and myself, we have had such poor luck with bergers. They kill the animals but not like they should. Gonna give hammers a go this year, just wrapped up load development for some 143s in my brothers 28 nosler.
