Waterfowl Season

Just seeing how everyone did this year. It was quite good for us on the delta. We usually do well from mid December on but this year was good from the beginning to just about the end(got a little slow the last week or so). Mostly wigeon and teal but quite a few mallards mixed in as well. I am assuming the lack of rice in the valley had something to do with it, but who really knows. Hoping all this rain creates some good nesting conditions.

Would love to hear some reports from other parts of the state.

Northern Ky, worst I’ve seen in 20 plus years here. went almost every weekend, we scratched a few down. Mostly gadwalls and a few mallard. Seen more hooded merganser than I can remember. Geese never have shown up. Talked to lots of guys at the boat ramps, same story. No birds here.

We had a phenomenal year. Opener to New Years was off the hook. Slowed quite a bit during all the rain, just started picking up again last week in Jan. Dad and son-in-law (Veterans) should be in for some stellar hunts this weekend  I hope all you landowners are getting our veterans out this weekend…..don’t let that pesky football game get in the way of what should be a great shoot in the upcoming N wind.

Nice looking straps, what part of the state are you hunting?

Couple miles southwest from Chico.

I do think the Klamath water debacle helped…..which is unfortunate. Waterfowl historically use that for a stopping over point as you all know, and this year, with almost no water, I’d guess a ton just shot straight to Sac Valley. The water shortages concentrate birds (to our advantage) but those concentrations have negative health issue —as evidenced by the large numbers of sick (avain flu?) birds in the north state——especially snow geese.

Waterfowl season was a weird one this year. Overall had fun but didn’t have the same amount of time to take advantage of it this year. The big game thing takes more and more time every year.

The ducks got here late and the big rains spread everything out of our normal pieces.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a duck like that one, what do you suppose it is, some kind of wood duck cross?
