Cutting Tags WY

There’s a I article out that says they’re NOT going to recommend any antelope tags for unit 61 due to winter mortality. I’d post the article here but I don’t know if I’m allowed to? Any thoughts?

You can definitely post a link to an article! That would be a huge cut, 175 tags to 0. That would mean the winter more or less wiped most of the antelope out. Scary stuff if it is true. They did not have any doe only tags in 61 last year, fyi.

I think we will see similar cut recommendations in other western states this year for all species.

It has been really bad here. The sweat water area, south pass to Farson , oregon buttes, lander to Riverton, all massive issues.

The lope this week finally got off the places they were stuck. The one herd I was watching daily on way to work went from over 45 to 16…. There were 16 left alive after the winter. All 12 babies died and and over 50% of the adults died. Some were hit by vehicles others just laid down and did not get up…

The second herd saw similar numbers all babies died, and a lot of adults died. They never got to the road so none were hit by cars but still over 50% mortality on adults…

Glad to see they're cutting tags to help the herd even though I finally had enough points again to draw a great tag this year.

What are the massive issues around Farson? Do you realize antelope migrate in and out of the area? There are no tag cuts even proposed for those areas and moreover, only a few doe antelope tag cuts proposed for the areas west of the continental divide. Red desert, south central areas got hammered for sure.

There is a chunk of lopes especially along the Swest water. That summer between Farson to South pass that migrate through oregon buttes south east into the red desert. Guarantee they are not firing well.

I also realize that there are areas where the bios are reluctant to cut tags despite winter kill. There is a unit here that has had significant winter kill yet no tag cuts. Why? I have my suspicions and it has nothing to do with biology, but politics…

So you're our local conspiracy theorist:rolleyes:...lol...well..knock yourself out...lol..:ROFLMAO: Man...Colaradaaa must have really jaded you dude...and now your bring that $$it up to Wyoming....whatever trips your trigger...holy smokes..good luck..

Doesn’t matter if they migrate if they die ?

Sure would like to see the deer and elk tag proposals/cuts ect.

If anyone has the link

Robb
It's the one on post #5 Robb,

Kinda gives you great confidence that they have good winter kill numbers when the proposed decreases are in big round numbers or general percentages. I guess it's really tough to know right now so I really can't bash them for trying.

So am I wrong that there is a pretty good chunk of lopes that migrate from east of Farson out of the Big Sandy, through the buttes area and into the desert? There are not lopes from the from a few miles outside Farson that don’t migrate that direction?

Funny that all you had were ad hominem attacks…. Usually when people start calling names and not providing any facts, it is because they have lost the argument…

Well, I'll eat crow... I was forwarded new proposed regs on antelope for western areas from a buddy that went to a g&f season setting meeting, not on the website yet...big cuts...damn...was trying to be optimistic...

Guys living in the middle of it tend to have a pretty good idea what's going on. Those that draw the few tags left this year in the hard hit areas are going to likely be pretty disappointed.

Snowblowed 16" out of my driveway yesterday...been absolutely dumping all day so far today. . the thing people dont get about this winter compared to ones in the past. Getting a lot of snow is normal etc, but I havent seen snow this deep in the valleys and low country in many years. Not only that, is its not been just a short stint, its been non-stop since december with below freezing temps, high winds, and deep snow. I have an unfortunate feeling this will be one of the worst winter kills in a long time, I hope im wrong, but nothing is telling me I will be

The forecast in SW Wyoming continues to be grim. Below freezing temps for highs and single digits for lows will most definitely kill more through next week.

Every WY resident should apply for doe/fawn antelope tags this year, and throw them in the trash if they are drawn.

Yes my entire family will be applying for as
Many doe fawn tags as we can and sit on them.

Yeah I was surprised but thought maybe there was something I did not know, maybe some weird area that was not as bad.

Some of you may be interested in this. They already had the season setting meeting so.... guess maybe they're getting alot of questions from non-hunting public..??
Pinedale Town Hall to discuss wildlife impacted by severe winter weather March 30 (posted 3/27/2023)
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon media release
Governor Mark Gordon and Wyoming Game and Fish Director Brian Nesvik have announced a town hall meeting on Thursday, March 30, at the Pinedale Library. The forum's focus is to provide an update on the status of Wyoming wildlife impacted by the extreme winter weather and obtain residents' input.

Wyoming residents, state legislators and local elected officials are invited to attend in person or virtually through Zoom. Following a brief presentation by the Wyoming Game and Fish, the meeting will be opened for questions and comments by the public.

The town hall meeting will be on Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 4-5:30 pm in the Lovatt Room of the Pinedale Library, 155 S. Tyler Ave.

I took these pics yesterday, March 28 on the winter range. There were another 4 dead deer visible from where I took this pic. Snow is deep and deer are walking on top because it's frozen. May 1 will be a mudfest for sure. It was -7 according to the truck. Didn't hang around long. Saw what I needed to see (or not see; as in deer) and went to the house.

"The bleak feeding conditions are as bad as any of the locals can remember, Hicks said. Even old timers who lived through the legendary winter of 1949 have told him what they’re seeing now is worse."
Sounds like a politician embellishing things a bit. That winter was 74 years ago. Damn few people around that are still alive that lived through that event; much less who would reliably remember it.
I agree that this winter is turning out to be a catastrophic event which will alter pronghorn and mule deer populations for quite some time. Hopefully they can recover. The mule deer in Nevada never came back to numbers seen prior to the winter of 1993.

Well I tried joining the Zoom meeting but got a message that said something about it was already at the limit of 100 people. Why a limit on number of people when they're on Zoom? I don't get it.

We never really recovered from that winter ('93), either. That was the first dagger to the heart of mule deer in Wyoming...

Good crowd at the meeting. They stated they had more trying to log on than they could handle. Tightly managed. Governor called the meeting, Nesvik spoke for G&F, Montieth did his deer presentation quickly. They took questions for over an hour and at 5:30 meeting was called. In a nutshell for western Wyoming...

Deer and antelope quotas and seasons may not be finalized until commissioner meeting in April...and if warranted by emergency, revised after that.

Deer...90-100% fawn loss anticipated. +30% of the adults...and if I read the graph right +40% of the bucks. That would take the Wyoming Range herd to a record low population. Monteith theorized from his research that since body fat condition was so good going into winter that should help those prime aged adult does pull through...if winter lets up. Totally anticipated any older age class would be dead.

Antelope....+50% of the adults. 90-100% of the fawns. The Mycoplasma Bovis bacteria that killed a couple hundred head south of Pinedale was also detected as far south as Rock Springs. They did say mortality rates may be worse in the Baggs/red desert region.

I'll say sportsman's comments, which there were guys from Sublette, Lincoln, & Sweetwater Co.'s, ranged from suspending hunting season for a couple years, to limited quota for deer to regional tag quotas for residents, to no doe tags. Some folks want feeding operations for deer and antelope, some want more habitat/migration corridors, and some want the winter range snowplowed and areas cleared of snow during winters like this...plow the snow off the sagebrush...Gov. didn't have the warm and fuzzy on that idea. If there was any push back during the meeting from G&F it was on the topic of feeding deer and antelope. That's a no go and not feasible...results from neighboring states don't show enough positive results for the amount of effort. That's all I got.

Man I hate reading this!! Just horrible for everyone having to deal with it and for all the animals!!
I was finally able to book a bucket list elk hunt in the Savery area. It would be my first ever elk hunt. Have to admit I am selfishly worried about it right now.
I know my hunt isn’t of any real importance compared to what is happening and I feel almost ashamed to be worrying about it.

It would be a great thing for no
NR licenses...
Limited resident tags
No doe licenses.
Raise the preference point cost for NR for 1 year to help mitigate the revenue loss

Residents kick some money also. A 1 year preference point system. You have to "buy" a license this year that is not valid to be able to buy a 2024 license to actually hunt.

I'm sorry wy is a great state but. It's not AZ or Utah as far as elk. Opportunity yea...but genetics speaks

You forgot to mention the cloud seeding discussion.

They need to cut Licensing all across the board!
No Non Resident licenses and Minimum Resident Licenses.
All Residents go into a DRAW now.

Good luck with that the meat hunters will cry cause they can't go shoot a fork horn off the road. We're all about "opportunity" here in wyo ?

Since you are so selfishly worried that you will miss out on your first elk hunt. (your words)
I was politely conveying a message to you...there are other states to hunt elk.

Not all meat hunters are road hunters and yes we do hunt for the meat here in Wyoming.

I am from wyoming. Do you hunt for meat or just eat what you kill? I think you know the crowd that I'm referring to when i made that comment.

Not sure but guess it went right over my head.
I hunt for meat and eat what I kill.
Any trophies taken by me lately are just luck, or bad luck on the animals' part.
Thankfully I'll have the chance at filling the freezers in our part of the state.
Looking very rough for most of you all, hoping this storm is not the death knell for your wildlife. Snowing all around us now.
