Unit 28 Deer Tag

Howdy yall,

After years of applying for multiple species I finally drew my first NM tag, a unit 28 deer tag. I’ve been hoping to draw the Oryx tag there but decided to put in for the deer tag as it’s relatively cheap and been craving to go on more western hunts. I’ll be coming from MN so have a bit of a drive, hoping I’ll be able to make it down for a scouting trip at some point this late summer to get familiar with the area.

Just curious if anyone has any info on the process for getting on the range, as well as any general info on the area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I think you’ve gotta wait for a season to open and buy a small game license in order to go on and scout. They should send you a packet of info or email if I’m not mistaken. Been a long time since I’ve been down there. Saw one buck once on there but he wouldn’t have been worth the drive from MN to there for.

Good to know, thanks!

You have to check in through the I sportsman app. They will send it to you all the info. Typically you can only scout on weekends. It’s a good hunt, good amount of deer. There are a few nice bucks there but not what I would call a trophy unit. 140-150 class bucks are realistic, I’ve seen a few bigger but not many. There are some impressive bucks there that don’t score well that I would shoot

Good deal, thanks! I’ve never shot a mule deer so I’d be ecstatic to come back with a 140-150!
