Would travel be to far to use a motel for elk hunting in unit 17? My daughter drew the youth muzz hunt, and deciding whether to camp with a tent or get a motel? What town would be best? Magdelena? Thanks

You can hunt out of magelanda for sure. Plenty of elk for the youth season 5 minutes from town or plenty with in a 45 minute drive for sure.

If you have a camper, camp.

If not, it depends on which side and which end of the mountain you want to hunt. That could be a long drive on dirt roads, and it depends in part on how fast you drive on dirt roads.

Exactly. And some of those roads are rough rough.

I will have a camp trailer down to unit 15 for the 2nd archery hunt, if I could find somewhere to store it for cheap, then I would leave it down there and pick it up on my way to 17 a few weeks later, but do not want to pull it down from Utah twice and especially for only a 4-5 day hunt. Thanks for all the info

I could probably help you out with the storage situation. It’s a great tag and like many have said you’d probably be better off staying in the hills

I would rather camp, but do not enjoy pulling the trailer that far twice in 3 weeks. Bugle, if you could help me out with the storage situation, that would be awesome.

My son drew the 17 youth deer tag and I have been looking into lodging vs camping vs outfitter (new for us), and there are some rental options but it is a ways up to the top. We are coming from North Idaho. It is a big unit and as others have said depending on what area you want to focus on it could be some drive time. Happy to share any info I find, you’ll be there a month before we will.

These 2 guys run an air bnb. I stayed there during a unit 17 antelope hunt a few years ago. At the time it was more of a bed/breakfast and they would cook breakfast in the mornings before I went out to hunt.

They were building a separate house for this so it may be worth calling em.
